Personal accounts: El Salvador

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, and careful preparation improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

FAQ

Can a non-resident open a bank account in El Salvador?
It is hard. Most banks are set up for clients with a DUI or residency status, and non-residents are onboarded selectively and with extra requirements. A referral from an existing client of the bank sometimes helps.
Do I need residency for a Salvadoran bank account?
Not as a matter of law, but residency makes an enormous practical difference. With a residence permit and a local number you get normal access to products; without one, access is selective and restricted. Requirements differ from bank to bank.
What currency are Salvadoran accounts in?
The US dollar has been the official currency since 2001, so accounts are held in dollars. That removes the conversion question but not the compliance checks on incoming transfers. Large inbound payments from abroad need documentary support.
Do I have to prove source of funds in El Salvador?
Yes. The bank will ask where the money came from and want documents - an employment contract, tax returns, an asset sale agreement. Large cash amounts trigger separate questions. Without a clear explanation the account is either declined or restricted later.
What currency are accounts in El Salvador?
US dollars: the country's official currency.
Is foreign income taxed in El Salvador?
No, El Salvador taxes only Salvadoran-source income.
Can you open an account in El Salvador remotely?
Usually the bank asks for a branch visit to sign and verify identity.
Is residence needed for an account in El Salvador?
Not always, but a link to the country, such as living there, property or business, greatly improves the chances.
Since when has El Salvador used the US dollar?
Since 2001 the US dollar has been El Salvador's official currency.
Can you get Salvadoran citizenship without moving?

Does a Salvadoran resident pay tax on foreign income?
No, El Salvador taxes only Salvadoran-source income.
What does a Salvadoran bank ask about the money?
Where the funds come from, why the account is needed, what inflows to expect and from which countries; this is backed by contracts and statements.
How long does opening an account in El Salvador take?
Usually a few days to a few weeks after a full pack: the bank checks documents and holds a meeting.
Why do Salvadoran banks refuse foreigners?
Most often due to no link to the country, unclear origin of funds or incomplete tax residency details.
Do documents need a Spanish translation?
Usually yes: the bank works with Spanish documents, and foreign certificates are translated.
Can you hold an account in El Salvador for property?
Yes, an account is convenient for paying for the purchase, taxes and utilities; the bank will ask for deal and source of funds documents.
