Personal accounts: France

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, and careful preparation improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

Who is a French tax resident

One criterion is enough: a home or main place of stay in France, main professional activity in the country or the centre of economic interests in France. A resident pays tax on worldwide income and reports foreign accounts in the return.

What we do

  • We choose a bank and prepare income and address documents.
  • If refused, we prepare the Banque de France right-to-an-account request.

FAQ

Can a non-resident open a bank account in France?
Yes, French banks do offer non-resident accounts (compte non-resident), though not every branch handles them and the terms are less favourable than for residents. Expect to provide a passport, proof of your address abroad and a reason for needing a French account - buying property, for instance. The bank still decides.
Do I need residency or a French address?
For a resident account, yes - you will need proof of a French address (justificatif de domicile) and legal residence status. A non-resident account can run off a foreign address, but with a narrower product range. Owning French property makes the conversation considerably easier.
What if a French bank turns me down?
There is a right to an account: with a written refusal you can apply to Banque de France, which designates a bank obliged to open a basic account with a free core set of services. The right covers people residing in France, French nationals living abroad and legal residents of the EU. It does not extend to credit or premium cards.
Does France report accounts to other countries?
Yes. France applies CRS and EU-level exchange, and FATCA with the United States. You will sign a tax residence self-certification when the account is opened. Declaring the foreign account in your own country of tax residence remains your responsibility.
What to do if a French bank refuses an account?
Apply to the Banque de France: it designates a bank obliged to open a basic account for someone living in France.
What is the tax on interest in France?
A flat 31.4% on interest, dividends and securities gains in 2026.
Must foreign accounts be reported in France?
Yes, a French tax resident lists foreign accounts in the annual return.
What is the deposit guarantee in France?
Up to €100,000 per depositor per bank, as across the EU.
How is family income tax calculated in France?
Household income is divided by the number of household quotient shares and the 0-45% scale is applied to one share; families with children therefore pay less.
What documents are needed for a French account?
A passport or residence permit, proof of address no older than three months and proof of income.
Can you open a French account without a residence permit?
Banks open accounts for non-residents less often and check more strictly; the right to a basic account via the Banque de France applies to those legally living in the EU.
What is the real estate wealth tax in France?
0.5-1.5% a year if net real estate on 1 January exceeds €1.3 million.
How long does opening a French account take?
Usually a few days to a few weeks after a full pack; via the Banque de France the designated bank must open a basic account promptly.
Is deposit interest taxed in France?
Yes, at a flat 31.4% in 2026; some savings accounts set by law are exempt.
