Personal accounts: Czech Republic
An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.
A personal account in the Czech Republic is opened by those moving here for work, study or an entrepreneur's residence permit, buying a flat in Prague or Brno, or visiting often. Czech banks work online and in branches, and many open an account for a foreigner on a passport and a second ID, but terms for non-residents are stricter. The national currency is the koruna, and euro accounts are also available.
Who can open a personal account
| Your status | Chances | What else the bank asks for |
|---|---|---|
| Residence permit or a work or study visa | high | residence card, address in the Czech Republic |
| EU citizen | high | ID card, address |
| Property owner | medium | a cadastre extract, source of funds |
| Non-EU non-resident with no link to the country | low to medium | account purpose, foreign address, source of funds |
Two documents and online opening
Czech banks usually ask for two documents: a passport and a second photo ID, such as a driving licence or residence card. Online opening needs a Czech phone number and sometimes a transfer from another account in your name to verify identity. Once opened, the account provides a bank-based electronic identity for government services.
Documents needed
- Passport and a second photo ID.
- For residents, the residence card and proof of address.
- Evidence of income and source of funds for large amounts.
- A form with tax residence: banks report foreigners' accounts to their country of residence.
An account for moving and buying a home
A work or study residence permit often needs proof of funds in a Czech account, and an entrepreneur's permit needs an account from which you pay housing and insurance. When buying a flat, money is placed in a notarial or bank escrow account and released to the seller after title is registered in the cadastre. This protects both sides, so it is convenient to open the account before the deal.
Transfers and running costs
Koruna transfers within the Czech Republic are instant around the clock, and euro transfers across Europe go through the Single Euro Payments Area. Many Czech banks keep a personal account free or for a small monthly fee if there are regular inflows or card payments, while paper statements and branch transactions cost extra. Taxes and deposit protection
The bank withholds 15% tax on deposit interest. If you live in the Czech Republic more than 183 days a year you become tax resident and declare worldwide income. The Financial Market Guarantee System protects deposits up to €100,000, about $112,100, per depositor per bank.
Timeline
| Stage | Time |
|---|---|
| Online or at a branch with documents ready | 1 day to 1 week |
| Non-resident with a source of funds check | 1-4 weeks |
| Card | up to 2 weeks |
An account for students and employees
Students at Czech universities and employees on a work contract usually open an account right after receiving the residence card: the bank needs only the passport, the card and proof of a dormitory or flat address. Employers pay salary only to a Czech or koruna account, and insurance and utility payments are easiest by standing order from the same account.
Why Czech banks refuse
- No second ID or Czech phone number for online opening.
- A non-resident with no clear purpose for the account.
- Large inflows expected without source documents.
- Citizenship or payment countries on a higher-risk list.
