The USA, Canada and Australia require a visa.

The Argentine passport opens 169 of 227 destinations without a prior visa: 126 fully visa-free, 33 with a visa on arrival and 10 with an electronic travel authorisation. The Schengen area, China and all of Latin America are visa-free.
The passport has two more advantages. Argentina does not require giving up previous citizenship, and the route to it is short: 2 years of living in the country and a decision by a federal judge, with no court fee. The downside is taxes: an Argentine resident reports worldwide income and assets, and residence follows time in the country, not the passport.

Where you can go visa-free with an Argentine passport
Entry regimes differ in how much preparation the trip needs. Visa-free means the passport is enough and the permitted stay is set at the border. A visa on arrival means a fee and a stamp at the airport or checkpoint. An electronic travel authorisation is a short online form and fee before departure. An e-visa is also online but involves a check and a consular decision. A regular visa means a form, documents, often a personal visit to the consulate and waiting for a decision.
| Region | Visa-free or with an electronic authorisation | Visa on arrival or e-visa | Visa needed in advance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Europe | Schengen area, United Kingdom (online authorisation), Ireland, Cyprus, Russia (online authorisation), Belarus, Moldova, Turkey, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, North Macedonia | - | - |
| Caucasus and Central Asia | Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan | Azerbaijan | - |
| Asia | China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea (online authorisation), Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines | Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Maldives | - |
| Middle East and Africa | UAE, Israel (online authorisation), Oman, Morocco, South Africa, Kenya (online authorisation) | Jordan, Egypt, Tanzania | Saudi Arabia |
| Americas | Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Panama, Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Uruguay | - | United States, Canada |
| Oceania | New Zealand (online authorisation) | - | Australia |
The strengths of the Argentine passport are Europe, Latin America and Asia: Schengen, Ireland, Cyprus, the Balkans, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, the UAE, Oman, Morocco, South Africa and all of Latin America including Mexico and Brazil are visa-free, while the UK, South Korea, Israel, Kenya and New Zealand need an electronic authorisation. The weak spots are the USA, Canada, Australia and Saudi Arabia, which require a visa in advance.
The table shows the main destinations for travel, living and business, not all 227 countries and territories. An electronic travel authorisation is issued online within minutes or days; an e-visa is also applied for online, but it is a separate consular decision. Entry rules change several times a year: check with an expert for your trip.
Schengen, the UK, the USA and Canada
Schengen. Argentine citizens enter the Schengen area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with no right to work. The European electronic travel authorisation has not launched yet, so the passport is enough for the trip.
United Kingdom. No visa is needed, but an electronic travel authorisation is obtained online before the trip.
USA. Argentina left the US Visa Waiver Program in 2002, so a tourist or business visa is required after a consular interview. In July 2025 the two countries signed a statement of intent to bring Argentina back into the programme; there is no decision on its inclusion.
Canada. A visa is required, but for air travel those holding a valid US visa or a Canadian visa from the last 10 years can use an electronic travel authorisation instead.
Asia and Oceania. China admits Argentine citizens without a visa under a waiver it introduced unilaterally; Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines are also visa-free, and South Korea and New Zealand need an electronic travel authorisation. India and Vietnam require an e-visa, Australia a visa.

What else an Argentine passport gives
Life in South America. An Argentine citizen enters Southern Common Market countries with an identity card instead of a passport and, under the residence agreement, obtains residence in Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and other member states through a simplified procedure.
Dual citizenship. Argentina does not require renouncing previous citizenship, so the first passport is kept.
Taxes. Argentina taxes residents on worldwide income and non-residents only on local income. The passport alone does not make you a resident: time in the country and the place of living decide, so the order of the move is planned in advance.
Argentine passport: validity, fee and where to apply
Argentine passports are issued by the national registry of persons, and abroad by consulates. An adult passport is valid for 10 years. Under the registry's 2026 tariff a regular passport costs about $70, an express passport issued within 96 business hours about $140, and a passport within a few hours at airports and selected registry offices about $220.
How to get an Argentine passport
An Argentine passport is obtained under Citizenship Law 346: a foreigner who has lived in the country for 2 years applies to a federal judge. There is no court fee; you pay only for official reports and the newspaper notice. On 30 June 2026 the National Electoral Chamber declared null decree 366/2025, which had moved decisions to the immigration service: the application once again goes to a federal judge.
The first step is a residence permit, with a state fee of about $70. On 2 October 2026 the Ministry of Economy announced citizenship by investment - a $350,000 payment or a $800,000 bond - but applications are not open yet. All costs on the way to the passport are in how much Argentine citizenship costs.
Requirements, timelines and documents are on the page Argentine citizenship.
Citizenship in 2 years, if the court counts those years
The law does not forbid applying for Argentine citizenship on your own. But mistakes cost more than the fees: long absences that stop the court counting 2 years in the country, a residence permit left without renewal, apostilled certificates that expired before the hearing. We arrange residence, count the years for the court, gather proof of living in Argentina and handle the case before the federal judge up to the oath and the passport.
