Visa-free countries with a Brazilian passport in 2026
170 destinations without a prior visa - one of the strongest passports in Latin America: Schengen, China, Japan, Russia. The USA, Canada and Mexico need a visa, and dual citizenship is allowed.
In short
With a Brazilian passport you can enter 170 of 227 countries and territories without a prior visa: the Schengen area, China, Japan, the UAE, Russia and almost all of Latin America, and the UK with an electronic travel authorisation. The USA, Canada, Mexico and Australia require a visa.
| Without a prior visa | 170 of 227: 129 visa-free, 31 on arrival, 10 with an electronic travel authorisation |
|---|---|
| Visa needed in advance | 56, of which 27 by e-visa |
| Schengen and the UK | Schengen area - visa-free, United Kingdom - electronic travel authorisation |
| USA and Canada | USA - visa required, Canada - visa required |
| How to get it | naturalization after 4 years with permanent residence, from 1 year for parents of Brazilian children |
| Checked | October 2026 |
The Brazilian passport opens 170 of 227 destinations without a prior visa: 129 fully visa-free, 31 with a visa on arrival and 10 with an electronic travel authorisation. That is 56 more than the Russian passport, a level close to EU passports by number of countries.
For a Russian citizen the Brazilian passport has other advantages too: Brazil allows dual citizenship, a child born in the country is Brazilian at once, and the parents of such a child can apply for citizenship after just a year of living in the country.

Where you can go visa-free with a Brazilian passport
Entry regimes differ in how much preparation the trip needs. Visa-free means the passport is enough and the permitted stay is set at the border. A visa on arrival means a fee and a stamp at the airport or checkpoint. An electronic travel authorisation is a short online form and fee before departure. An e-visa is also online but involves a check and a consular decision. A regular visa means a form, documents, often a personal visit to the consulate and waiting for a decision.
| Region | Visa-free or with an electronic authorisation | Visa on arrival or e-visa | Visa needed in advance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Europe | Schengen area, United Kingdom (online authorisation), Ireland, Cyprus, Russia (online authorisation), Belarus, Moldova, Turkey, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, North Macedonia | - | - |
| Caucasus and Central Asia | Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan | Azerbaijan | - |
| Asia | China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea (online authorisation), Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines | Vietnam, India, Maldives | - |
| Middle East and Africa | UAE, Israel (online authorisation), Oman, Morocco, South Africa, Kenya (online authorisation) | Jordan, Egypt, Tanzania | Saudi Arabia |
| Americas | Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Panama, Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Uruguay | - | USA, Canada, Mexico |
| Oceania | New Zealand (online authorisation) | - | Australia |
The strengths of the Brazilian passport are Europe, Asia and Latin America: Schengen, Ireland, Cyprus, the Balkans, Turkey, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, the UAE, Morocco and South Africa are visa-free, as is almost all of Latin America, while the UK, South Korea, Israel and New Zealand need an electronic authorisation. The weak spots are the USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia and Saudi Arabia, which require a visa in advance.
The table shows the main destinations for travel, living and business, not all 227 countries and territories. An electronic travel authorisation is issued online within minutes or days; an e-visa is also applied for online, but it is a separate consular decision. Entry rules change several times a year: check with an expert for your trip.
Schengen, the UK, the USA and Canada
Schengen. Brazilian citizens enter the Schengen area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with no right to work. Once the European electronic travel authorisation launches, it will have to be obtained online before the trip.
United Kingdom. No visa is needed, but an electronic travel authorisation is obtained online before the trip.
USA. Brazil is not in the US Visa Waiver Program, so a tourist or business visa is required.
Canada. A visa is required, but for air travel those holding a valid US visa or a Canadian visa from the last 10 years can use an electronic travel authorisation instead.
Mexico and Asia. Since 2022 Mexico again requires a visa from Brazilians. But since June 2025 no visa is needed for China, and Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia are visa-free.
What else a Brazilian passport gives
Life in South America. A Brazilian citizen lives and works in the country without a residence permit, and under the residence agreement of the Southern Common Market can obtain residence in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and other member states through a simplified procedure.
Dual citizenship. Previous citizenship is kept on naturalization, and since 2023 Brazilians themselves no longer lose citizenship when acquiring another. The Russian passport stays, and a Russian citizen notifies the Interior Ministry of the second citizenship within 60 days.
Children. A child born in Brazil is Brazilian by birth under Article 12 of the Constitution, even if the parents are foreigners. The parents get a family reunification residence permit and can apply for citizenship after a year.
Taxes. A passport does not make you a Brazilian tax resident. A resident pays income tax on worldwide income at rates up to 27.5%, a non-resident only on Brazilian income.
How to get a Brazilian passport
A Brazilian passport is not for sale. Ordinary naturalization is open after 4 years of living in the country with permanent residence, reduced naturalization after one year for parents of Brazilian children and spouses of Brazilian citizens, and extraordinary naturalization after 15 years of continuous residence without a criminal record. Portuguese must be proven by a state exam.
A Russian citizen needs no visa for Brazil for up to 90 days, and a residence permit is arranged for the qualifying period: for retirees, remote work, property or business. Details in Brazilian citizenship for Russians.
Requirements, timelines and documents are on the page Brazilian citizenship.
Fees are small, a certificate that is rejected costs more
The law does not forbid applying for Brazilian citizenship on your own. But mistakes cost more than the fees: a Russian criminal record certificate in the wrong form, a Portuguese exam taken without preparation, a residence permit that does not count towards the term and missing documents for a Brazilian child. We choose the residence ground, prepare apostilled and translated certificates and handle the naturalization application.
