The Luxembourg passport opens 186 of 227 destinations without a prior visa: 143 fully visa-free, 26 with a visa on arrival and 17 with an electronic travel authorisation. Above all, a Luxembourg citizen is an EU citizen and lives, works and studies in any EU country without permits.
A Luxembourg passport is not for sale, but the route to it is clear: 5 years of legal residence, a Luxembourgish language exam and a 24-hour civic course. The procedure carries no fee, the previous passport is kept, and the 10-year passport itself costs about $57.

Where you can go visa-free with a Luxembourg passport
Entry regimes differ in how much preparation the trip needs. Visa-free means the passport is enough and the permitted stay is set at the border. A visa on arrival means a fee and a stamp at the airport or checkpoint. An electronic travel authorisation is a short online form and fee before departure. An e-visa is also online but involves a check and a consular decision. A regular visa means a form, documents, often a personal visit to the consulate and waiting for a decision.
| Region | Visa-free or with an electronic authorisation | Visa on arrival or e-visa | Visa needed in advance |

| Europe | Schengen area (live and work), United Kingdom (online authorisation), Ireland (live and work), Cyprus (live and work), Belarus, Moldova, Turkey, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, North Macedonia | Russia | - |

The strengths of the Luxembourg passport are freedom in the European Union and visa-free travel almost everywhere: the Balkans, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the UAE, Oman, Morocco, South Africa and all of Latin America are visa-free, while the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Israel need an electronic authorisation. None of the main destinations requires a visa in advance, and Russia, Azerbaijan and India issue e-visas.
The table shows the main destinations for travel, living and business, not all 227 countries and territories. An electronic travel authorisation is issued online within minutes or days; an e-visa is also applied for online, but it is a separate consular decision. Entry rules change several times a year: check with an expert for your trip.
Schengen, the UK, the USA and Canada
The EU and Schengen. A Luxembourg citizen needs neither a visa nor a travel authorisation: they live in any EU country indefinitely, work without a work permit and register as residents under the general rules for EU citizens.
United Kingdom. No visa is needed, but since 2025 an electronic travel authorisation is obtained online before the trip.
USA. Luxembourg is in the Visa Waiver Program: tourist and business trips of up to 90 days with an electronic travel authorisation.
Canada, Australia and New Zealand. With an electronic travel authorisation obtained online before departure.
Asia. China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia are visa-free, and South Korea needs an electronic travel authorisation. From 15 August 2025 to 14 August 2028 Vietnam admits Luxembourg citizens without a visa for 45 days for tourism. India requires an e-visa.

What else a Luxembourg passport gives
Life in the European Union. A Luxembourg citizen lives, works and studies in any of the 27 EU countries without residence or work permits, votes in European Parliament elections and gets consular protection from any EU country where Luxembourg has no embassy. These rights pass to children born after naturalisation.
Dual citizenship. Luxembourg has allowed dual citizenship since 1 January 2009, so the previous passport is kept.
Taxes. Income tax runs from 0 to 42% plus a 7-9% surcharge on the tax, and VAT is 17%, the lowest standard rate in the EU. Shares and crypto held by a private investor for more than six months are not taxed on sale.
Luxembourg passport: validity, fee and where to apply
Since 11 May 2026 Luxembourg issues a new passport model: an adult passport is valid for 10 years instead of 5, at the same price. An adult passport costs about $57 and is ready in 7 working days, an urgent one about $170 in 3 working days. Children aged 4-17 receive a 5-year passport for about $57, children under 4 a 2-year passport for about $34.
You apply at your commune's population office or at the passport and visa office of Luxembourg's Foreign Ministry.
How to get a Luxembourg passport
A Luxembourg passport is obtained under the citizenship law of 8 March 2017. Naturalisation comes after 5 years of legal residence, the last year without a break, with a Luxembourgish language exam (elementary speaking, intermediate listening) and the 24-hour civic course "Living together" or a test. The procedure carries no fee; the exam costs about $85 and the money is refunded. A naturalisation decision takes up to 8 months, and spouses of citizens, descendants and those who grew up in the country have the option procedure with a decision in 4 months.
Luxembourg grants no citizenship for investment: the investor residence permit from $560,000 does not shorten the five-year period, and the government has proposed abolishing it. Restoring citizenship through an ancestor under Article 89 of the law closed on 31 December 2025.
Requirements, timelines and documents are on the page Luxembourg citizenship.
The procedure is free, and the 5 years count only on a legal status
The law does not forbid applying for Luxembourg citizenship on your own. But mistakes cost more than the fees: a break in the last year before applying, a residence permit that does not count towards the 5 years, a Luxembourgish exam without preparation, apostilled documents that expired. We choose the basis for living in the country, count the years before applying, gather the documents and handle the application up to the oath and the passport.
