The Vanuatu passport opens 85 of 227 destinations without a prior visa: 52 fully visa-free, 27 with a visa on arrival and 6 with an electronic travel authorisation. In 2022 it had 135, but the European Union and the UK introduced visas for its holders.

The value of this passport is speed and simplicity rather than the number of countries: citizenship takes 1-3 months with no relocation, language or exam, and Vanuatu has recognised dual citizenship since 2014. It gives no visa-free access to Europe.

Where you can go visa-free with a Vanuatu passport

Entry regimes differ in how much preparation the trip needs. Visa-free means the passport is enough and the permitted stay is set at the border. A visa on arrival means a fee and a stamp at the airport or checkpoint. An electronic travel authorisation is a short online form and fee before departure. An e-visa is also online but involves a check and a consular decision. A regular visa means a form, documents, often a personal visit to the consulate and waiting for a decision.

The strengths of the Vanuatu passport are Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, European countries outside the EU and part of Latin America: Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Russia, Moldova, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kenya, Tanzania, Peru, Panama and the Dominican Republic are visa-free, and Israel needs an electronic authorisation. Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, the UAE, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and India issue e-visas. The weak spots are the EU, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan and South Korea, which require a visa in advance.

The table shows the main destinations for travel, living and business, not all 227 countries and territories. An electronic travel authorisation is issued online within minutes or days; an e-visa is also applied for online, but it is a separate consular decision. Entry rules change several times a year: check with an expert for your trip.

Schengen, the UK, the USA and Canada

Schengen. A Schengen visa is required. In March 2022 the European Union partially suspended visa-free travel with Vanuatu, fully from 4 February 2023, and from 3 February 2025 Regulation (EU) 2025/11 moved Vanuatu to the list of countries with a permanent visa requirement. EU documents name one reason: citizenship by investment without a genuine link to the country.

United Kingdom. A visa has been required since 19 July 2023: you apply online and give biometrics at a visa centre. The British government cited abuse of the citizenship by investment programme.

USA. A visa is required after a consular interview. Vanuatu is not in the US entry restriction proclamation in force from 1 January 2026.

Canada. A visa is required, issued at a visa centre with biometrics.

Asia. Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines are visa-free, and Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and India issue e-visas. China, Japan and South Korea require a visa.

What else a Vanuatu passport gives

Dual citizenship. Vanuatu has recognised dual citizenship since 2014, when a constitutional amendment came into force, so the first passport is kept.

Taxes. Vanuatu has no personal income tax, capital gains tax or inheritance tax, and VAT is 15%. But the passport does not change tax residence: taxes are paid where you live. Banks also look at another fact: in 2026 Vanuatu remains on the EU list of non-cooperative tax jurisdictions.

Family in one application. A spouse, children and parents are included in the application, and the contribution for a family of four starts at $180,000.

Vanuatu passport: issue times and fees

The passport is issued by Vanuatu's passport service after the oath and biometrics given in person in Vanuatu or at an overseas point. Under the service's tariff a passport issued within 21 days costs $85 (10,000 vatu), within 10 days $170 (20,000 vatu) and within 3 days $220 (25,000 vatu).

How to get a Vanuatu passport

A Vanuatu passport is obtained through the Development Support Program: a non-refundable contribution from $130,000 for a single applicant, and all mandatory payments including the $5,000 due diligence fee and other charges from $140,000. There is no residence, exam or language requirement, the certificate comes 1-3 months after filing, and the oath is taken by video link.

Applications are accepted only through a designated agent - a Vanuatu citizen with a main office in Port Vila - and the Citizenship Office publishes the list of designated agents. All costs are in how much Vanuatu citizenship costs.

Requirements, timelines and documents are on the page Vanuatu citizenship.

A contribution from $130,000, and a refusal after due diligence costs more

You cannot apply for Vanuatu citizenship on your own: only a designated agent submits the application. But even with an agent, mistakes cost more than the contribution: a source of funds without documents, an intermediary on the Citizenship Office blacklist, an application with a criminal record the commission does not approve. We check whether you qualify under the programme rules, prepare the documents and handle the application through a designated agent up to the passport.

The cost of support depends on your family; our manager in the chat calculates it.
