The Turkish passport opens 112 of 227 destinations without a prior visa, of which 73 are fully visa-free, 33 with a visa on arrival and 6 with an electronic travel authorisation. By the number of countries it hardly differs from the Russian passport, which has 114 destinations in 2026. But the set of countries is different and, above all, the Turkish passport carries none of the restrictions Russian citizens have faced since 2022.

So for a Russian citizen the value of a Turkish passport is not the country count but what comes with it: the right to live and work in Turkey without a residence permit, access to the US investor visa under a treaty between the countries, and a passport for the whole family for an investment from $400,000 with no relocation and no language exam.

Where you can go visa-free with a Turkish passport

Entry regimes differ in how much preparation the trip needs. Visa-free means the passport is enough and the permitted stay is set at the border. A visa on arrival means a fee and a stamp at the airport or checkpoint. An electronic travel authorisation is a short online form and fee before departure. An e-visa is also online but involves a check and a consular decision. A regular visa means a form, documents, often a personal visit to the consulate and waiting for a decision.

The strengths of the Turkish passport are Latin America and the former Soviet Union: Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Panama, Uruguay and Paraguay are visa-free, as are Belarus, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova. Mexico requires an electronic authorisation. In the Balkans, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania and North Macedonia are visa-free. The weak spots are the EU and English-speaking countries.

The table shows the main destinations for travel, living and business, not all 227 countries and territories. An electronic travel authorisation is issued online within minutes or days; an e-visa is also applied for online, but it is a separate consular decision. Entry rules change several times a year: check with an expert for your trip.

Schengen, the UK, the USA and Canada

Schengen. Turkish citizens need a Schengen visa. Visa liberalisation talks with the EU have been under way since 2013 but are not complete. The visa is issued by the consulate of the main destination country; by law the decision takes up to 15 days, longer in high season.

United Kingdom. A standard visitor visa is required: the electronic travel authorisation that EU citizens obtain does not apply to Turkish citizens.

USA. A tourist or business visa is required for travel. But Turkey is on the list of countries with a US treaty of commerce and navigation, so its citizens can obtain the investor visa: it allows living in the USA, running your own business and renewing an unlimited number of times while the business operates. Russian citizens have no access to this visa, which is one of the main reasons people take a Turkish passport.

Canada and Australia. Visas only for Turkish citizens; they are not eligible for the Canadian electronic travel authorisation instead of a visa.

Asia. Visa-free: Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia; South Korea with an electronic travel authorisation. China and India require a visa.

What else a Turkish passport gives

Living and working in Turkey. A citizen lives and works in the country without a residence or work permit, opens accounts and companies and buys property on general terms, without the checks foreigners go through.

Dual citizenship. Turkey does not require you to give up your previous passport, including under citizenship by investment (Citizenship Law No. 5901). The Russian passport is kept, and the second citizenship is notified to the Russian Interior Ministry within 60 days.

Family. Under citizenship by investment the spouse and children under 18 receive passports; adult children and parents need their own investment. Children of a Turkish citizen are Turkish citizens by birth wherever they are born.

Taxes. A passport alone does not make you a Turkish tax resident. A person becomes resident by living in the country for more than 6 months in a calendar year; a resident pays income tax on worldwide income at rates from 15 to 40%. Someone living outside Turkey pays tax only on Turkish income.

What the passport does not give. Turkey is not in the European Union, so a Turkish passport gives no right to live and work in Europe: that requires the passport of an EU country or a residence permit there.

How to get a Turkish passport

A Turkish passport is not sold directly, but it is granted for investment by presidential decision under Law No. 5901. The options: real estate from $400,000 by a valuer's report with an obligation not to sell it for 3 years, a bank deposit, government bonds or a business investment from $500,000 for the same period. You do not need to live in Turkey or pass a language exam; a 10-year passport costs about $305 per person.

Processing takes a few months after the purchase: the property valuation, the bank certificate on the currency sale, the investor's residence permit and the family check. Regular naturalization comes after 5 years of living in the country, and for spouses of Turkish citizens after 3 years of marriage. All cost items are in how much Turkish citizenship costs.

Requirements, timelines and documents are on the page Turkish citizenship by investment.

The passport takes $400,000, a mistake in the deal costs more

The law does not forbid applying for Turkish citizenship on your own. But mistakes cost more than the fees: a valuation below the threshold while the contract price is above it, money without the bank's currency sale certificate, a property already used for citizenship, a sale before 3 years. We check the property and valuation before the deposit, handle the deal and the application for the whole family and, once you have the passport, help with visas where the Turkish passport does not travel visa-free.
