How much Argentine citizenship costs in 2026
The Argentine citizenship court charges no fee, and state fees for the residence permit and passport come to about $210 per adult. The real price is two years living in the country.

|---|---|
| Route | naturalisation through a federal court |
| Residence | 2 years before applying |
| Court fee | none |
| State fees | ~$210 per adult |

An Argentine passport is one of the cheapest in the world in fees: the court handles citizenship cases for free, and the residence permit and passport cost about $70 each. Time cannot be bought, though: you must live in the country for two years before applying, and the court takes a year or more.
Since 30 June 2026 citizenship is again granted only through a federal court: the decree that moved it to the migration service was declared null. Below is every cost item, family amounts, timelines and what happens if you are refused.
What the cost is made of
| Cost item | Amount | Who pays |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary residence | $70 | each adult |
| Permanent residence or renewal | $70 | each adult |
| Passport | $70 | each adult |
| Agency certificates and newspaper notice | at agency and newspaper rates | each applicant |
| Foreigner ID card | at the population registry's rate | each family member |
| Apostille and sworn translation | per document | each adult |
| Express passport instead of standard | ~$135 | optional |
The court case itself is free. Migration service and population registry fees are converted at the official Central Bank of Argentina rate, rounded up.
Most of the money goes not to the state but to two years of living in the country: housing, insurance and document translations.
The court is free, but a mistake costs a year
The biggest losses on the way to an Argentine passport come not from fees but from time: long trips abroad that make the court reject two years as continuous, a certificate that expires while agencies prepare others, a translation without a sworn translator's signature. Murblz arranges the residence permit, counts your days in the country, gathers certificates in the right order and handles the case in the federal court through to the oath.
How much it costs for a family of 2, 3 and 4
| Family | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Two adults | from $420 |
| Two adults and a child | from $420 (children not included) |
| Two adults and two children | from $420 (children not included) |
Naturalisation in Argentina is only from age 18: each adult files their own case and pays their own fees. Children live on their parents' residence permits and apply themselves once they turn 18. A child born in Argentina is a citizen from birth.
We will work out online when you can apply and what fees and documents will cost for your family.
What the cost does not include
- rent and two years of living in the country;
- flights and trips to migration service and court appointments;
- police certificates from your country of origin;
- apostilles and sworn translations;
- children's passports and documents.
Timeline by step
| Step | Time |
|---|---|
| Residence permit: online application and in-person appointment | 1-3 months |
| Living in the country until you can apply | 2 years |
| Certificates and filing at the federal court | 1-2 months |
| Agency checks and newspaper notice | several months |
| Court decision and oath | a year or more after filing |
| Citizen ID card and passport | usually up to a month |
By the rules the judge decides within 90 days of the agencies' replies. Certificates take months, so the whole path from arrival to passport usually takes 3-4 years.
Is money refunded if you are refused
There is no investment in this programme and the court charges no fee, so a refusal mainly costs time. Residence permit and passport fees are not refunded.
Cases are most often delayed by breaks in residence and gaps in certificates. Entry and exit dates are checked before filing, and certificates are gathered so that none expires.
Comparison with neighbouring programmes
| Country | Route | Minimum for one | Time | Dual citizenship |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uruguay | Naturalisation after permanent residence | from $250 | 3 years with family or 5 without, plus the Electoral Court queue | allowed |
| Paraguay | Permanent residence through investment, then naturalisation | from $70,000 | No earlier than 3 years of living there with permanent residence, plus court | with conditions |
| Mexico | Naturalisation | from $3,500 | 5 years of residence, 2 through marriage or a child | renounced on naturalisation |
Uruguay and Paraguay also grant a passport through living in the country, but require more years. Mexico asks for 5 years and an exam. Argentina wins on time and a free court, and loses on queues in busy courts.
What changed in 2026
On 30 June 2026 the National Electoral Chamber declared null the 2025 decree that moved citizenship decisions to the migration service. The passport is again obtained through a federal judge under the citizenship law.
The government has announced citizenship by investment, but applications are not open. For now the only route for a foreigner without Argentine roots or children is two years in the country and the court.
Documents for the court
- passport and foreigner ID card;
- birth certificate with an apostille and sworn translation;
- police certificate from your country of origin;
- proof of address, income or occupation: an employment contract, statements, tax receipts;
- a migration service record of entries and exits over two years;
- birth certificates of Argentine children, if any.
The court itself requests certificates from the police and other agencies, so your own documents must not expire while you wait.
Who Argentine citizenship suits
Those ready to live in the country for two years without rushing: the passport is cheap and opens about 170 visa-free destinations. A good option for families working for foreign clients and for those whose child was born in Argentina.
It does not suit those who need a passport without moving or within a year: the court and checks take time, and money cannot speed them up.
