How much Israeli citizenship costs in 2026

7 min read ·

Citizenship under the Law of Return is itself free: neither the consular check nor new immigrant status costs anything. You pay for documents, and their price depends on how many archives must be searched.

Israeli citizenship under the Law of Return is the cheapest of all second citizenships: the state charges nothing for the consular check or for new immigrant status. Jews, their children and grandchildren, and the spouses of each, are eligible.

The price comes from elsewhere - finding documents proving Jewish descent, apostilles, translations and the move. Below are all the cost items, family amounts, timelines and what happens on refusal.

What the cost is made of

Cost itemAmountWho pays
Consular check and new immigrant statusfreeeach family member
Searching registry offices and archivesat archive ratesper request
Apostilles on duplicates and certificatesat the issuing country's rateper document
Translations of documents in other languagesper pageeach family member
Police certificatesat the issuing country's rateeach adult
Flight and first housing costsat market priceseach family member

The number of documents to be found affects the total most: if Jewish nationality is recorded on a parent's certificate, a couple of records will do, but if the chain runs through a grandmother from another country, the search takes months.

An apostille is mandatory on all recently issued duplicates, reissued certificates and records.

No state fees, but a refusal comes down to one missing document

The main risk in aliyah is not money but a gap in the chain of documents: an unexplained difference in a name or date, or no record of nationality. That ends a consular check in refusal, and the archive search starts over. Murblz builds the kinship chain before filing, finds missing records in archives, arranges apostilles and prepares you for the consular check.

A spouse is entitled to aliyah even without Jewish roots. Minor children move with their parents, while adult children and grandchildren apply on their own right. If one of a child's parents is not moving, their notarised consent is needed.

What the cost does not include

  • searching archives for proof of descent;
  • apostilles, translations and police certificates;
  • the flight and first housing costs in Israel;
  • insurance and living costs until the first absorption payments;
  • our support, if you ask us to prepare the documents.

Timeline by step

StepTime
Finding documents on descent and kinshipfrom a few weeks to several months
Apostilles and translationsa few weeks
Consular check in the country of residenceby appointment
Aliyah approval and the moveafter the check
ID card and new immigrant statusat the airport or in the first days
Full passportafter about a year in the country

The whole path from gathering documents to moving usually takes 3 to 12 months. Since 2026 the consular check is mandatory and held in the country of residence: you can no longer arrive as a tourist and apply in Israel.

Is money refunded if you are refused

There is nothing to refund: the state charges nothing for the check or the status. If the right to aliyah is refused, only the spending on archives, apostilles and translations is lost.

Refusals most often come from gaps in the chain of documents: unexplained differences in names and dates or no record of nationality.

Other citizenships by descent cost more in fees and usually do not require moving, but they lack perks like 10 years without tax on foreign income. An Italian or Latvian passport gives life in the EU, an Israeli one gives a country of its own and a strong tax break for new residents.

Taxes and obligations after aliyah

A new immigrant's foreign income - dividends, interest, rent, foreign pensions - is exempt from Israeli tax for 10 years. But for those who became residents from 1 January 2026 the reporting exemption was abolished: foreign income and assets must be shown to the tax authority even if no tax is due.

Israel allows dual citizenship, and a Russian citizen must notify the Russian interior ministry of a second citizenship within 60 days. Young immigrants may be called up to the army, so the rules are checked in advance.

Documents for the consular check

  • a passport valid for more than 6 months after the check, and an internal passport;
  • a birth certificate and documents linking the applicant to a Jewish relative through each generation;
  • documents on Jewish descent: birth certificates of parents and grandparents showing nationality, military IDs, archive records;
  • marriage, divorce and name change certificates;
  • a police certificate for adults.
