How much Greek citizenship costs in 2026
Greece's state fees are modest at about $150, and naturalisation through a consulate does not require living in the country. The main cost is proof of Greek descent and a conversation with the consul.

|---|---|
| Route | naturalisation of an ethnic Greek through a consulate |
| State fees | ~$150 per applicant |

Greece has no single repatriation programme, but for descendants of ethnic Greeks from Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Georgia there is one route - naturalisation through a consulate. Its state fees are among the lowest in Europe: about $150 per applicant.
What costs money is not the fee but the evidence: records of the ancestors' nationality, apostilles, official translations into Greek and trips to the consulate. Below are all the cost items, family amounts, timelines and what happens on refusal.
What the cost is made of
| Cost item | Amount | Who pays |
|---|---|---|
| Fee for naturalisation of an ethnic Greek | $115 | main applicant |
| Consular fee | $35 | main applicant |
| Archive records of the ancestors' nationality | at archive rates | per request |
| Apostille and official translation into Greek | at issuing country and translator rates | per document |
| Police certificate from the country of residence | at the issuing country's rate | each adult |
| Travel to the consulate to file and for the interview | at market prices | each adult |
The fee is paid on filing, and the receipt is attached to the naturalisation declaration. The declaration is drawn up at the consulate in front of two witnesses who are Greek citizens.
For people from the former Soviet Union the key document is a record of the ancestors' nationality, and it is the one most often missing.
Fees are about $150, but the consul's interview decides
The Greek route rarely fails on money: refusals come when the documents lack a record of the ancestors' nationality or the consul sees no link to Greek culture. Murblz finds archive records of nationality, builds the kinship chain, arranges apostilles and official translations and prepares you for the consul's interview.
How much it costs for a family of 2, 3 and 4
| Family | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Two adults | from $150 if only one spouse has roots: the other does not become a citizen automatically |
| Two adults and a child | from $150: a child under 18 acquires citizenship with the parent |
| Two adults and two children | from $150: children under 18 acquire citizenship with the parent |
Minor children acquire citizenship with the parent without a separate fee. A spouse without Greek roots does not become a citizen automatically, and adult children apply on their own.
We will work out online when you can apply and what fees and documents will cost for your family.
What the cost does not include
- archive records of the ancestors' nationality;
- apostilles and official translations into Greek;
- police certificates;
- travel to the consulate to file and for the interview;
- Greek language courses if you choose to take them for the interview.
Timeline by step
| Step | Time |
|---|---|
| Finding documents on Greek descent | from a few weeks to several months |
| Apostilles and official translations | a few weeks |
| Filing the declaration at the consulate with two witnesses | by appointment |
| Interview with the consul | after filing |
| Decision and oath | about 18 months by the authority's estimate |
| Registration in the Greek registry and a passport | after the decision |
18 months is the official estimate for a complete file; in practice it takes longer, since an appointment at a busy consulate can itself take more than a year.
Is money refunded if you are refused
Fees are not refunded on refusal, but they are small. What is lost is mainly the spending on archives, apostilles and translations.
Refusals most often come when the consul sees no Greek national consciousness or the documents lack a record of the ancestors' nationality. So the interview is prepared for in advance.
Comparison with neighbouring programmes
| Country | Route | Minimum for one | Time | Dual citizenship |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Italy | Recognition by descent if a parent or grandparent held Italian citizenship only | from $675 | Up to 36 months after filing, not counting the wait for an appointment | allowed |
| Bulgaria | Citizenship by Bulgarian origin | fees at the tariff | 1-2 years | allowed |
| Romania | Citizenship restored by descent (Article 11) | from $60 | Years in the National Citizenship Authority (ANC) queue | allowed |
On fees Greece is cheaper than Italy and other citizenships by descent. Italy requires only documents, while Greece also requires a conversation with the consul about your link to Greek culture.
What the consul asks at the interview
Ethnic Greeks abroad take no written exam; instead there is a personal conversation. The consul assesses Greek national consciousness: whether the applicant knows the history of their ancestors and how they ended up in Russia, the Caucasus or Central Asia, whether Greek customs survive in the family, what they know about Greece, whether they speak Greek or the Pontic dialect and take part in Greek community life.
The law sets no language level, but a conversation without a single Greek word noticeably weakens the case. More on Greek citizenship by descent.
Army and taxes: what men should know
Since 2026 new conscription rules apply to all citizens, including naturalised ones. Permanent residents abroad get a deferral until 45 if they lived outside Greece from 16 to 18 and do not spend more than six months a calendar year in Greece. The status is confirmed by a consulate certificate filed with the military office every three years.
Citizenship itself creates no taxes: you become a Greek tax resident by living in the country. Rates are on taxes in Greece.
