Cost of living in Spain in 2026

8 min read · ·

One person in Madrid needs about $2,200-2,700 a month including rent, noticeably less in Valencia. Groceries and cafés in Spain are among the most affordable in Western Europe, while the main expense is rent, which has risen sharply in recent years.

Key facts2026
Single person with rent in Madrid$2,200-2,700 a month
Couple$3,000-3,700 a month
Family with a childfrom $4,000 a month
One-bedroom flat in central Madrid~$1,570
Minimum wage 2026$1,400 (€1,221) a month in 14 payments
Madrid travel pass$40 (€32.70); $15 (€10) under 26

Data checked: 06.10.2026

Spain is cheaper than France, Germany and the Netherlands in almost everything except rent in big cities. Market groceries, the café menu of the day, public transport and public healthcare are affordable, but flats in Madrid and Barcelona have become so expensive in recent years that they eat half the budget. In Valencia, Alicante, Málaga and smaller towns rents are noticeably lower.

Besides rent, utilities are noticeable: air conditioning in summer and heating in winter, since central heating is not everywhere. Transport, on the other hand, is cheap: a Madrid monthly pass costs $40 (€32.70), and $15 (€10) for under-26s across the region.

Who Spain suits financially: remote workers earning from $2,500-3,000 a month, retirees and families who choose Valencia, Alicante or Málaga over the capital, and anyone who values a mild climate and free public healthcare when working in the country.

Compared with Moscow, groceries and café lunches in Spain cost about the same or slightly more, transport and public healthcare are more affordable, while rent in central Madrid is noticeably higher than in good Moscow districts. In Valencia and Alicante the rent gap almost disappears.

Amounts below are in dollars at the European Central Bank rate on 6 October 2026, about $1.125 to the euro. Rents are based on long-term listings.

Utilities depend on the season and heating: air conditioning bills rise in summer and heating bills in winter.

Monthly budget: single, couple, family with a child

HouseholdPer month
Single person$2,200-2,700
Couple$3,000-3,700
Family with a childfrom $4,000

The single budget assumes a one-bedroom flat in Madrid, groceries, phone, transport and moderate café spending. For a family the total depends on the district, school and insurance, so we calculate the exact sum in the chat.

A Spain budget starts with your residence ground

To live in Spain beyond 90 days a Russian citizen needs a national visa or residence permit, and the ground shapes the budget: non-lucrative residence needs income and private insurance, the nomad visa needs proven remote work. The second common mistake is renting without registering at the town hall: without it you cannot get a foreigner's card or enrol a child in school. We choose the ground, prepare the documents and help with the lease, registration and insurance.

The cost of support depends on the ground and family size; our manager in the chat will calculate it.

What to pay in the first month

  • Deposit on the flat - one month's rent by law, sometimes with an extra guarantee requested by the landlord.
  • Under the 2023 housing law the landlord, not the tenant, pays the agency commission on residential lets.
  • Registration at the town hall: without it you cannot get a foreigner's card or enrol a child in school.
  • Fingerprints and the foreigner's card - fee about $20 (€16).
  • Private health insurance, if your residence ground requires it.

For the first three months one person in Madrid needs from $8,100 including rent outside the centre, deposit and documents.

Where to live: comparing cities

Madrid is the capital with jobs, international schools and a large Russian-speaking community. The centre, Salamanca and Chamberí are the priciest, while southern districts and suburbs with good commuter rail are cheaper.

Valencia offers the sea, a mild climate and rents a third below Madrid's: a central one-bedroom flat costs $1,015-1,465. The city suits families and remote workers.

Barcelona is as expensive as Madrid, while Alicante and Málaga are cheaper and sunnier, with large foreign communities.

Districts and prices in detail: Madrid, Valencia.

Healthcare and insurance

Employees and self-employed people who pay contributions, and their families, get public healthcare free. Non-lucrative residence requires private insurance without co-payments: about $56-135 a month for an adult depending on age.

A private clinic visit costs about $56-100.

Schools and nurseries

Public schools are free and teach in Spanish, and in Catalonia, Valencia, the Basque Country and Galicia also in regional languages. There are also partly state-funded schools with modest fees.

International schools cost $5,700-31,000 a year: the primary years are the cheapest and the final years the most expensive, with the widest choice in Madrid.

Salaries and taxes

The 2026 minimum wage is $1,400 (€1,221) a month in 14 payments, or $20,000 (€17,094) a year. Average wages in Madrid and Barcelona are higher than elsewhere in the country.

Resident income tax is 19-47% on a sliding scale, and recruited specialists can choose a special regime with a flat 24% on Spanish income up to $680,000 (€600,000) a year. You become a tax resident after 183 days a year.

How to cut costs

  • Live in Valencia, Alicante or Málaga rather than Madrid and Barcelona.
  • Have the menu of the day for lunch: $15-20 (€13-17) for several courses with a drink.
  • Buy groceries at markets and in budget chains.
  • Get a monthly travel pass: under 26 it costs $15 (€10) in Madrid.
  • Rent long term: short lets cost noticeably more.

The main saving is the city. A central one-bedroom flat in Valencia costs $100-550 a month less than in central Madrid, with the sea close by.
