Mexico has two price levels. Local life is cheap: a metro ride costs 5 pesos, a set lunch in a modest café $10-15, and market produce less than supermarket food. But in the districts foreigners love, rents have risen so far that they eat more than half the budget.
In Mexico City one person renting in Roma or Condesa spends roughly $1,800-2,600 a month. The same money buys more space in Narvarte or Del Valle, and in Playa del Carmen a one-bedroom flat costs $760-980.
Who Mexico suits financially: remote workers earning from $2,500 a month, families who want a US time zone and international schools, and people willing to live outside the trendiest neighbourhoods.

Playa del Carmen prices are for long-term rentals; by the sea and in the tourist zone they are higher, and summer air conditioning pushes bills up noticeably.

| Family with a child | from $3,800 |
The single budget assumes a one-bedroom flat in Roma or Condesa, groceries, utilities, phone and internet, transport, private insurance and moderate spending on cafés. For a family the total depends on the district, school and insurance, so we work out the exact figure in the chat.
A Mexico City budget starts at the consulate
In Mexico money is lost not on food but on status: temporary residency is applied for at a consulate before the move, each consulate checks income or savings against its own thresholds, and a tourist entry does not turn into residency inside the country. The law does not stop you applying on your own. But mistakes cost more: statements that fall short of the threshold, booking the wrong consulate, missing the 30 days to exchange the visa for a resident card. We choose the consulate and grounds, prepare the statements and handle the case until the card is issued.
The cost of support depends on the grounds and your family; a manager will calculate it in the chat.
What to pay in the first month
- A deposit of usually one or two months' rent, plus a guarantor who owns property in Mexico City or rent insurance.
- Furniture and appliances if the flat is let empty.
- The first private health insurance payment.
- Home internet and a local SIM card.
- The consular fee and exchanging the visa for a resident card within 30 days of entry.
For the first three months one person in Mexico City needs from $6,500 including the deposit, rent insurance and setting up home.
Where to live: comparing cities
Mexico City is a capital at 2,200 metres with mild weather all year. Newcomers choose Roma and Condesa for parks, cafés and walkable streets, Polanco for upmarket homes and offices, and Narvarte, Del Valle and Escandón for lower prices with the same level of safety.
Playa del Carmen is a resort on the Caribbean coast, an hour from Cancún airport. It draws remote workers and families who want the sea and warm winters, but schools and doctors are fewer than in the capital.

Healthcare and insurance
Public healthcare runs through the social security institute: employees join automatically, and foreigners with residency can enrol voluntarily. Most newcomers buy private insurance, about $60-200 a month depending on age and cover.
A visit to a private clinic costs about $35-70.
Schools and nurseries
State schools are free and teach in Spanish. Foreign families in Mexico City choose bilingual and international schools, most of them in Polanco, Santa Fe and the south of the city.
An international school in Mexico City costs about $10,000-25,000 a year; Playa del Carmen has fewer options.
Salaries and taxes
The minimum wage in 2026 is 315.04 pesos a day, about $540 a month, and 440.87 pesos a day in the zone along the US border.
Resident income tax runs from 1.92% to 35% on a sliding scale, and VAT is 16%. Residency depends on your home rather than days: Mexican law has no 183-day rule and looks at where your home is.

How to cut costs
- Live in Narvarte, Del Valle or Escandón rather than Roma and Condesa: a flat costs a third less or more.
- Eat the set lunch in modest cafés: $10-15 for several courses.
- Use the metro and Metrobús instead of taxis.
- Buy food at markets rather than in chains aimed at foreigners.
- Rent for a year in pesos rather than monthly in dollars.
The biggest saving is the district. A remote worker does best living outside Roma and Condesa on a one-year lease: the difference in rent reaches $500-800 a month.
