Kyrgyzstan is one of the most affordable places to live among the former Soviet republics. Food, transport and rent are noticeably cheaper than in Russia or Kazakhstan, and Russian citizens need no visa: they can enter even with an internal passport, and as citizens of the Eurasian Economic Union they may work under an employment contract without a separate permit.
The main expense is housing in Bishkek. Since 2022 thousands of people have moved to the city, and rent in the centre has risen faster than wages: a one-bedroom flat in the Golden Square costs $510-610 a month, in residential districts $370-420. Imported electronics, cars and good housing in new buildings cost more than average.
Who Kyrgyzstan suits on budget: remote workers and entrepreneurs with income from abroad, those who want to live near the mountains without a language barrier, and people born in the Kyrgyz SSR, for whom the path to a local passport is shorter than usual.
Amounts below are in US dollars at the National Bank of Kyrgyzstan rate of 6 October 2026, 87.45 som per dollar, rounded up.

Prices in 2026: rent, groceries, transport
| Monthly item | Bishkek | Osh |
|---|---|---|
| One-bedroom flat in the centre | $510-610 | $230-400 |
| One-bedroom flat in a cheaper district | $370-420 | - |

Rent figures are for furnished flats on long leases. In Bishkek the most expensive area is the centre between Chui and Manas avenues, cheaper ones are residential districts such as Kok-Zhar and Tunguch. Rent is often quoted in dollars and paid in som.
Groceries for one person cooking at home cost 7,000-10,000 som a month, about $80-120; imported products and cafés raise the total. In winter heating adds to utility bills, and smog settles over the city in its basin.
Monthly budget: single, couple, family with a child
| Household | Per month |
|---|---|
| Single person | $900-1,200 |
| Couple | $1,100-1,500 |
| Family with a child | from $1,500 |
The single budget assumes a one-bedroom flat in Bishkek, groceries, phone and internet, utilities, transport and moderate café spending: without rent a single person needs about $360-500 a month. In Osh a one-room flat costs 20,000-35,000 som, about $230-400, and a single person needs about $550-800 a month. For a family we calculate the exact figure in the chat.
Life in Bishkek is cheap, an unsettled status is not
In Kyrgyzstan money is lost at the start not on rent but on paperwork: a forgotten registration after 30 days, work without a contract, a bank account refused without proof of income, and years of waiting where those born in the Kyrgyz SSR can get citizenship after a year of living with a residence permit. We arrange registration and the residence permit, help with the bank and a company and handle the path to a passport if it is open to you.
The cost of support depends on the ground and your family; a manager will calculate it in the chat.
What to pay in the first month
- A deposit for the flat - usually one month's rent, sometimes with a month paid in advance.
- The first month's rent in Bishkek - $510-610 for a one-bedroom flat in the centre.
- Registration within 5 days if you stay longer than 30 days.
- A local SIM card and a bank account: some branches ask for proof of income.
- Health insurance for the first period, until you have an employment contract.
For the first three months a single person needs from $3,300 with rent in Bishkek, a deposit and living costs.
Where to live: comparing cities
Bishkek is the capital, where jobs, banks, private clinics, Russian-language schools and a large Russian-speaking community are concentrated. The Ala-Archa gorge is half an hour away and Issyk-Kul about four hours.
Osh is the country's second city in the south, near the border with Uzbekistan. Rent here is much cheaper than in the capital, but there are fewer international companies, clinics and foreigners, and Kyrgyz or Uzbek is needed more often in daily life.
Many newcomers live in Bishkek and spend summers at Issyk-Kul. Districts and prices in the capital are covered in detail in the Bishkek guide.

Healthcare and insurance
Employees under a contract pay contributions and receive care under compulsory insurance. Before that, and for the self-employed, private insurance and private clinics are more convenient, and in Bishkek they are inexpensive compared with Russia.
Many prefer to have complex treatment in Almaty, Moscow or Istanbul, so insurance with cover abroad is worth discussing in advance.
Schools and nurseries
Bishkek has many state and private schools teaching in Russian, as well as private international schools with English-language programmes.
State nurseries are inexpensive but short of places, so many families choose private nurseries, which are available immediately and cost more.
Salaries and taxes
The average accrued salary in Kyrgyzstan in January-July 2026, according to the National Statistical Committee, was 54,864 som, about $630; in Bishkek in the first half of the year 64,293 som, about $740. After the employee's 10% contributions and 10% tax, about 80% of these amounts is taken home.
Income tax is 10%, with reduced rates for certain activities. Residents of the High Technology Park that export IT services are exempt from profit tax, so many newcomers work through such companies.

How to cut costs
- Rent in residential districts rather than the Golden Square: the difference is about $150-200 a month.
- Buy groceries at the Osh and Alamedin bazaars rather than in chain supermarkets.
- Agree a one-year lease with payment in som.
- Use taxi apps instead of private drivers: city rides are inexpensive.
- Consider Osh or another city if you work remotely: rent there is half as much.
The main saving is the district and the lease term. Monthly lets in central Bishkek cost more than annual ones, and outside the centre the same money buys a more spacious flat.
