Is it worth moving to Bishkek in 2026

Bishkek is Kyrgyzstan's green capital at the foot of the mountains, where Russian is spoken and taxes are among the lowest in the region. Russian citizens enter visa-free, work without a work permit as citizens of the Eurasian Economic Union, and those born in the USSR can obtain citizenship under a simplified procedure. The city suits entrepreneurs, remote workers and IT specialists who want an affordable option with a familiar language next to Kazakhstan and China.

What it costs to live in Bishkek

ItemPer month
One-bedroom flat in the centre~$510-610
One-bedroom flat outside the centre~$370-420
Utilities for an 85 m² flat~$51
Home internet~$12
Public transport pass~$12
One person's costs without rent~$360-500
Family of four without rent~$1,110-1,830

Prices come from two independent 2026 price databases, with som converted at the National Bank of Kyrgyzstan official rate of 5 October 2026, 87.45 som per dollar. A square metre in the centre costs about $1,670-1,780.

Where to live in Bishkek: districts

  • Golden Square - the centre between Chui and Manas avenues, cafés, parks and offices, the most expensive rents.
  • Asanbay and Vostok-5 - the south and east with new buildings and mountain views.
  • Dzhal - a southern district of private houses and new builds, closer to the mountains with cleaner air.
  • Kok-Zhar and Tunguch - residential micro-districts with affordable rents.
  • The Philharmonic and Osh Bazaar area - lively and well connected, but noisy.

Entry, work and residence

Russian citizens enter Kyrgyzstan visa-free, including on an internal passport. If you stay more than 30 days, you must register at your place of stay within 5 days. As citizens of the Eurasian Economic Union, Russians work under an employment contract without a work permit. For long-term living people obtain a residence permit, and those born in the USSR or the Kirghiz SSR can obtain citizenship after a year of residence with a residence permit, with a fee of about $25. More on the Kyrgyz citizenship for those born in the USSR page.

Taxes in Kyrgyzstan

Personal income tax is 10%, with reduced rates of 5% and 1%. Tax residence arises after 183 days in any 12 months. Corporate tax is 10%, and residents of the High Technology Park exporting IT services are exempt from corporate tax, sales tax and VAT. Small businesses pay a single tax of 0 to 8% of revenue, usually 2-6%, and VAT is 12%. A foreign resident with a residence permit pays 10% on worldwide income, except foreign dividends. More on the Taxes in Kyrgyzstan page.

Business and accounts

A limited liability company with foreign participation is registered with the Ministry of Justice in about three days, with a fee of 255 som, about $3. A foreigner can open a bank account, but banks have become more cautious and some branches restrict work with foreigners, so documents on income and the account's purpose are prepared in advance. More on the company registration in Kyrgyzstan page.

Buying and renting

Land is not transferred to foreigners' ownership, so flats and premises are bought, while a deal involving a house and its land is planned separately. There is no residence or citizenship for buying property. Property tax is calculated by floor area, and the area allowance does not apply to foreigners, so a foreigner pays more for the same flat. Rent is usually paid monthly, often in dollars, and the lease should be in writing.

Climate and everyday life

The climate is sharply continental: hot summers up to 30-35 degrees, winter frosts down to minus 10-15, and lots of sunny days. In winter coal heating causes heavy smog in the city, so many people use air purifiers or live in southern districts closer to the mountains. Mountains and gorges begin half an hour from the centre, and Lake Issyk-Kul is about four hours away. Everyone understands Russian, and official documents are in Kyrgyz and Russian.

Pitfalls

  • Winter smog in the city centre.
  • Banks are cautious about opening accounts for foreigners.
  • Foreigners cannot own land.
  • Registration at your place of stay if you stay longer than 30 days.
  • A residence permit exposes your foreign income to the tax office.

Murblz specialists register companies, help with residence and citizenship for those born in the USSR and calculate taxes in advance.

FAQ

Do you need a visa for Kyrgyzstan?
It depends on your passport. Many nationalities, including European Union, UK and US passport holders, get visa-free entry for short stays, though the permitted period varies, and longer stays need a residence permit through work, study, business or family. Russian citizens enter freely, including on an internal passport, and stays over 30 days require registration within 5 days.
