Until 2026 Cyprus had no specific rule for crypto, and an individual's gain from selling coins was assessed under general rules. The tax reform changed that: from 1 January 2026 the income tax law has a separate article under which gains from disposing of crypto-assets are taxed at a flat 8%.

The rate is low, but the base is wide. A disposal is not only a sale of coins for euros but also a swap of one coin for another and paying for goods and services with crypto. A loss can be offset only against crypto gains of the same year; it cannot be carried forward.

Who pays crypto tax in Cyprus

A Cyprus tax resident is someone who spent more than 183 days on the island in a calendar year. There is also a 60-day rule: you also become resident after at least 60 days in Cyprus if you were not resident elsewhere, ran a business or worked here and had a home.

A resident pays tax on worldwide income, including sales of coins on foreign exchanges. A non-resident pays only on Cypriot income, and crypto gains made before you became resident are not taxed at the 8% rate.

Non-domiciled resident status exempts dividends and interest from the defence contribution but does not affect the 8% crypto rate.

Russia suspended the main articles of its tax treaty with Cyprus from 8 August 2023, so the date of moving and the change of residency must be documented especially carefully. More on the Cyprus taxes page.

How to calculate crypto income

Tax is calculated per disposal: the value received - euros, another coin, goods - minus the purchase price and costs directly linked to the deal. The gain is taxed at 8% regardless of how long you held the coin.

A loss on one disposal reduces gains from other crypto disposals in the same year. An unused loss is lost: it cannot be carried to the next year or set against salary and other income.

Since a coin-to-coin swap is also a disposal, each such deal has to be valued in euros on the swap date. Without per-trade records, calculating the year's tax correctly is almost impossible.

In Cyprus the 8% applies to every swap, not only sales for euros

The usual mistake is what counts as taxable: a coin-to-coin swap and paying with crypto are also disposals here, losses cannot be carried to the next year, and the purchase date and price of old coins must be proved with documents. We collect trades from every platform, calculate the gain on each disposal, check which income falls under the 8% and which under the general scale, and prepare a package for the return and the bank.

The cost of support depends on the number of trades and platforms; a manager will calculate it in the chat.

Mining and staking

The 8% rate applies to disposals of coins. If mining, trading or staking is carried on as a regular activity, the income is taxed as ordinary income on the general income tax scale, not at the flat rate.

Staking and mining rewards are best tracked separately from day one: the coin's value on the date received becomes its purchase price when you later sell it.

If you are paid in crypto for your work or services, that is employment or business income on the ordinary scale, not a gain on disposing of coins.

Cashing out crypto and moving it to a bank

You can sell crypto for euros through platforms legally operating in the EU and withdraw the money to a Cypriot bank account. The withdrawal itself is not taxed; the tax is calculated on the sale.

Since 2013 Cypriot banks have checked clients strictly and look at incoming funds from exchanges especially closely: they may ask for trade statements, the platform agreement and proof of where the first coins came from.

Banks do not accept deposits above 100,000 euros, about $112,100, from Russian citizens without EU residence, so a large withdrawal is planned together with the status.

Crypto account data sharing

From 1 January 2026 the EU directive on exchanging crypto-asset data applies: platforms collect data on clients' trades, and the first exchange between tax authorities takes place in 2027. The Cypriot tax department will see residents' disposals on platforms in the EU and in countries that have joined the standard of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

For holders this means every coin-to-coin swap will be visible to the tax office. The 8% calculation will have to be backed by statements.

If sales in past years were not declared, it is safer to correct them yourself before the tax office sends a request.

Licences for crypto companies in Cyprus

Companies that exchange, hold or transfer clients' crypto in the EU operate under a crypto-asset service provider authorisation under the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. In Cyprus it is issued by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission.

A Cypriot company's profit is taxed under the general corporate rules. A comparison of countries for a licence is in our article on the crypto licence.

An international project without Cypriot clients often finds a licence in another country more convenient, and a Cypriot company is set up for a holding or a related business.

Murblz sets up crypto companies and licences in these services: crypto licence: countries and costs, crypto licence in Estonia, BVI company with a virtual asset service provider licence.
