Argentina has taxed individuals' gains from selling crypto with a separate tax since 2018. The rate is 15%, and 5% for peso trades without indexation. A resident also declares gains from foreign exchanges at 15%.
Separately, coins on 31 December count towards the personal assets tax: the tax authority values them at purchase cost, not market value. Local exchanges and wallets report clients' balances and transactions to the tax office.
Who pays crypto tax in Argentina
Argentine tax residents are citizens and foreigners who have obtained permanent status or lived in the country for 12 months on temporary status. A resident pays tax on worldwide income.
A non-resident pays only on Argentine income. For newcomers the date residency begins matters: gains made before it are not taxed in Argentina.
Residents pay the personal assets tax on worldwide assets above the tax-free threshold, and rates have been falling in recent years.
The date of moving and the change of residency should be documented carefully, especially if your previous country taxes its residents on worldwide income. More on the Argentina taxes page.
How to calculate crypto income
Tax is calculated on the year's gain: sale price minus purchase price and trading costs. The rate is 15%, and 5% for peso trades without indexation.
Coins on 31 December are included in the personal assets tax at purchase cost. If total assets exceed the tax-free threshold, tax is calculated on a progressive scale.
Records are kept per exchange: local platforms report data to the tax office, and the amounts in the return must match them.
| Situation | Calculation | Tax |
|---|---|---|
| Bought coins for $10,000, sold for $15,000 | $5,000 × 15% | $750 |
| Sold coins for pesos without indexation with a $2,000 gain | $2,000 × 5% | $100 |
| A $6,000 gain and a $2,000 loss in one year | ($6,000 - $2,000) × 15% | $600 |
| Coins bought for $40,000, worth $60,000 on 31 December | in wealth tax - at purchase cost of $40,000 | on the scale |
| Mining as an activity with a $5,000 profit | income on the scale, example rate 15% | $750 |
Amounts in US dollars in 2026; the rate in the mining example is illustrative, the total depends on the year's overall income.
In Argentina 15% on gains plus wealth tax, and exchanges report balances to the tax office
The usual mistakes are in three places: not declaring gains from foreign exchanges in the belief they are invisible, confusing the 5% rate for peso trades without indexation with the 15% rate, and leaving coins out of wealth tax at their purchase cost. We collect trades from all platforms, calculate gains at the right rate, include coins in the wealth tax return and prepare a package for the bank when cashing out.
The cost of support depends on the number of trades and platforms; a manager will calculate it in the chat.
Mining and staking
Mining carried on as an activity is taxed as business income on the progressive scale, with equipment and electricity costs deducted.
Staking rewards are recorded at their value on the date received: it becomes the purchase price on a later sale.
If a salary or fee is paid in crypto, that is employment income on the ordinary scale.
Cashing out crypto and moving it to a bank
You can sell crypto for pesos or dollars through local platforms registered with the National Securities Commission and withdraw the money to an Argentine account. The withdrawal itself is not taxed.
Since 2025 most currency restrictions for individuals have been lifted, so buying and withdrawing dollars has become easier. Banks still check the origin of large incoming funds from exchanges.
An Argentine account requires a local tax number, obtained together with the identity card or through a separate procedure.
Crypto account data sharing
Argentine exchanges and wallets report clients' balances and transactions to the tax authority, and Argentina takes part in the automatic exchange of information on foreign accounts.
For holders this means sales on local platforms and money in foreign accounts are visible to the tax office, and the amounts in the return must match them.
If gains and assets were not declared in past years, it is safer to correct them yourself before the tax office sends a request.
