Georgia is one of the few countries near Russia where an individual sells crypto tax-free. On 28 June 2019 the Finance Ministry issued a public decision: an individual's income from selling crypto-assets is not Georgian-source income, and such income of individuals is not taxed in the country. The rate is 0%, however large the gain.

But Georgia's zero has conditions. It applies to an individual selling their own coins, not to a business: regular trading for clients, industrial mining and handling other people's money are taxed under business rules. And it gives nothing to someone who remains a tax resident of another country.

Who pays crypto tax in Georgia

A Georgian tax resident is someone who spends 183 days or more in the country in any 12 consecutive months ending in the tax year. There is also a separate residence status for high-net-worth individuals who prove assets or income under special rules.

Georgia's zero is useful only when you have no obligation to pay tax in another country. A Russian citizen who remains a Russian tax resident pays tax on crypto income there, wherever the coins are sold. So the first check is when you stopped being resident in the previous country.

A tax residence certificate issued by the Revenue Service helps confirm Georgian residence. Banks, foreign exchanges and other countries' tax authorities ask for it.

Citizenship and a residence permit do not determine residence: days do. More on taxes and life in the country on the residence and taxes in Georgia page.

How to calculate crypto income

An individual does not need to calculate tax on crypto sales in Georgia: the rate is 0%. But trades still need to be tracked - for the bank, for a foreign exchange and for the previous country's tax office should a residence question ever arise.

The key is keeping the history: purchase dates and prices, exchange statements, wallet addresses and bank payments. Without it, it is hard to prove the source of funds to a bank and to show that trades fell within the period of Georgian residence.

If coins are sold as a business - through a sole trader or a company, for clients, or regularly and in large volumes - income is taxed under the chosen form. A sole trader with small business status pays 1% of turnover, though not for all activities, and a company pays 15% on distributed profit.

Amounts in US dollars at the National Bank of Georgia rate of 6 October 2026, tax rounded. Tax on distributed profit is calculated on the grossed-up amount: 15/85 of the payout.

Georgia's zero works only if you are truly resident and do not trade as a business

Mistakes are rarely about the rate and mostly about status: people consider themselves Georgian residents without reaching 183 days, remain resident in the previous country where crypto income is taxed, or turn regular trading and mining into an unregistered business. We check residence in Georgia and the previous country, obtain a residence certificate and a bank package with the trade history, and choose a structure for mining or trading as a business.

The cost of support depends on the number of trades, exchanges and the chosen structure; a manager will calculate it in the chat.

Mining and staking

Industrial mining in Georgia is run through companies: their profit is taxed at 15% only when distributed to owners, and electricity and equipment count as expenses.

There is no separate rule for private mining. Selling mined coins falls under the general decision on crypto-asset sales, but regular mining with employees and rented premises may be treated by the tax office as a business.

Staking is not separately described in Georgian law. An individual's rewards, like mined coins, are in practice taxed only on sale, and a sale by an individual is not taxed.

Cashing out crypto and moving it to a bank

Crypto can be sold for lari or dollars through platforms registered with the National Bank of Georgia as virtual asset service providers, and the money withdrawn to a Georgian bank account.

Georgian banks check receipts from exchanges and expect a clear explanation: trade statements, wallet history and proof of where the first coins came from. Residents of Russia and other sanctioned countries are often asked more questions.

Exchanges through private individuals and cash do occur, but for large sums this is the worst route: there is almost nothing to prove the source of funds when opening an account or buying an apartment.

Crypto account data sharing

Georgia is not among the first two waves of countries starting automatic exchange of crypto-asset data in 2027-2028 under the standard of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

That does not make trades invisible. Exchanges in the EU and other participating countries report clients to their country of tax residence, so for a former resident of another country it matters which residence is shown in their exchange profile.

If you have become a Georgian resident, update your tax residence on all exchanges and support it with a certificate: otherwise trade data will go to the previous country's tax office.

Licences for crypto companies in Georgia

Crypto business with clients' coins in Georgia - exchange, custody, transfers, brokerage - has since 2023 been conducted only by virtual asset service providers registered with the National Bank of Georgia. Without registration, accepting and exchanging clients' coins is not allowed.

For an international project without clients in Georgia a licence in another country, such as Estonia or the British Virgin Islands, is often more convenient, while a Georgian company is set up for related business.

A Georgian company's profit is taxed at 15% only on distribution; while profit is reinvested there is no tax. More on the company registration in Georgia page.
