7 min read · ·

Half of the gain from selling coins is included in income and taxed on the ordinary scale, so the effective rate is up to 27% in Ontario. Frequent trading is taxed in full as a business. How to calculate it and what to declare.

The Canada Revenue Agency treats crypto as a commodity, not money. If coins are sold as an investor, it is a capital gain: only half of the gain is included in income and taxed on the ordinary scale of federal and provincial tax. The government cancelled the increase of this share to two thirds in March 2025, and in 2026 it remains 50%.

If a person trades often, short-term and like a professional, the agency may treat it as a business, and then the whole gain is taxed. A coin-to-coin swap is a sale at market value, so tax arises even without cashing out.

Who pays crypto tax in Canada

A Canadian tax resident is someone with significant ties here - a home, a spouse, children - or who spends 183 days or more in the country in a year. A resident pays tax on worldwide income.

An important point for newcomers: on arrival and becoming resident, coins are deemed acquired at market value on that date, so gains accrued before the move are not taxed in Canada. On departure the reverse applies: property is deemed sold at market value, and tax is paid on the accrued gain.

A non-resident pays tax in Canada only on Canadian income.

How to calculate crypto income

The gain is the sale price minus the cost and expenses. Half of the gain is added to the year's other income and taxed on the scale: federal tax from 14% to 33% plus provincial tax. In Ontario the top combined rate is 53.53%, so up to 26.76% on crypto gains.

The cost is calculated as the average for all coins of one kind. A loss on sale reduces capital gains, and an unused loss is carried back three years or forward indefinitely. But if you or a related person bought the same coins within 30 days before or after the sale, the loss is denied.

Records are kept per exchange and wallet: in an audit the agency asks for trade statements and proof of cost.

Canada taxes half of the gain, but frequent trading turns it into business income

The usual mistakes are in three places: leaving out coin-to-coin swaps although the tax agency treats them as sales, claiming a loss after buying the same coins back within 30 days, and trading so often that the whole gain is taxed as business income rather than half of it. We collect trades from all exchanges, calculate the cost base under the agency's rules, separate capital gains from income and prepare the return and a package for the bank.

The cost of support depends on the number of trades and platforms; a manager will calculate it in the chat.

Mining and staking

Mining as an activity is taxed as business income: the whole profit after equipment and electricity costs is included. Mining as a hobby, without a profit motive, is assessed separately by the agency.

Staking rewards are usually included in income at market value on the date received, which becomes their cost on a later sale. The rules depend on how the rewards are earned, so each payout is recorded.

If a salary or fee is paid in crypto, that is employment income on the ordinary scale.

Cashing out crypto and moving it to a bank

You can sell crypto for Canadian dollars through platforms registered with provincial securities regulators and withdraw the money to a Canadian account. The withdrawal itself is not taxed.

Canadian banks check the origin of large inflows from exchanges. You need trade statements, deposit history and proof of where the money for the first purchases came from.

Anyone moving with coins should record their market value on the date residency begins: it becomes their cost.

Crypto account data sharing

Canada is implementing the international crypto-asset reporting standard: platforms collect client and transaction data from 1 January 2026, and the first reports for 2026 are filed in 2027. Canada also exchanges information on foreign financial accounts.

For holders this means trades on Canadian and foreign platforms will be visible to the agency, and the amounts in the return must match them.

If gains were not declared in past years, it is safer to correct them yourself before the agency sends a request.

Licences for crypto companies in Canada

Crypto exchanges serving Canadians register with provincial securities regulators as dealers, and businesses that exchange or transfer virtual currency register with the financial intelligence centre as money services businesses.

A Canadian company's profit is taxed at 15% federally plus provincial tax, with lower rates for small businesses. A comparison of countries for a licence is in our article on the crypto licence.

A project without Canadian clients usually finds a licence in another country more convenient.
