In detail

A Nigerian by birth can hold a second citizenship and stay Nigerian. The fastest route is Caribbean citizenship by investment: Dominica from $200,000, Antigua and Barbuda from $230,000, Saint Lucia from $240,000 and St Kitts and Nevis from $250,000, with decisions in about 3 to 6 months and the whole application run from home. The second route is citizenship through residence, which takes years of living in the new country.

Rules and figures follow the official sites of the citizenship programmes and the Nigerian government in 2026.

Nigeria allows dual citizenship

The 1999 Constitution of Nigeria provides for dual citizenship, and the National Diaspora Policy builds on it. A Nigerian by birth keeps Nigerian citizenship when taking another one and does not ask anyone for permission.

  • Your Nigerian passport stays valid: Nigerian missions issue the enhanced e-passport to dual nationals, who bring their foreign passport along with the birth certificate.
  • Ten years of validity: the enhanced e-passport is valid for 10 years, so it travels well alongside a second passport.
  • Your children: a child applies for a Nigerian passport with the data page of a parent's Nigerian passport, and a child with dual nationality adds the other passport.

The rules of every country on holding two passports are in which countries allow dual citizenship.

Citizenship by investment for Nigerians: four programmes compared

Nigeria is on none of the restricted lists of these programmes, so Nigerians apply on the standard terms. The contribution is a one-time payment to a government fund.

ProgrammeContribution for oneFamilyTimeline and conditions
Dominica$200,000$250,000 with up to 3 dependants3 to 6 months, online interview
Antigua and Barbuda$230,000the same $230,000 for the spouse, children and parents over 555 days in the country within 5 years after citizenship
Saint Lucia$240,000the same $240,000 with up to 3 dependantsabout 90 days from acceptance to the grant
St Kitts and Nevis$250,000the same $250,000 for a family of up to 4120 to 180 days to a decision

Each extra dependant adds to the contribution: in Dominica $25,000 under 18 and $40,000 from 18, in Saint Lucia $10,000 and $20,000, in St Kitts and Nevis $25,000 and $50,000. Grenada runs its own programme as well. Dominica and St Kitts and Nevis are compared side by side in Dominica or St Kitts and Nevis, and the whole region in Caribbean citizenship by investment.

We will help you get a second passport

A second passport comes faster when the programme fits your family and visa history from the start. The most common mistakes: starting with the contribution and leaving police certificates and notarised affidavits to the last moment, choosing a programme without counting parents and adult children, and not checking past visas against the programme rules. We match the programme to your goals, gather and check the documents, work with the licensed agent and follow the application through to the passport.

Details and the cost of support are with a manager in the chat.

Fees on top of the contribution

Every programme adds government fees and a due diligence fee, the background check on each adult in the application.

  • Dominica: processing $1,000; due diligence $7,500 for the main applicant and $4,000 per dependant from 16; interview $1,000 per person from 16; naturalisation certificate $500 per person.
  • Antigua and Barbuda: processing $10,000 for one, $20,000 for a family of up to 4 and $10,000 for each further dependant; due diligence $8,500 for the main applicant, $5,000 for the spouse, $2,000 per child aged 12 to 17 and $4,000 per dependant from 18; passport fees.
  • Saint Lucia: processing $2,000 for the applicant and $1,000 per dependant; due diligence for the applicant and each dependant from 16; an interview and identity check.
  • St Kitts and Nevis: due diligence $10,000 for the main applicant and $7,500 per dependant from 16; an interview.

The full budget for each country, family size by family size, is in Dominica citizenship cost, Antigua citizenship cost, Saint Lucia citizenship cost, St Kitts citizenship cost and Grenada citizenship cost.

Who qualifies

  • Main applicant: from 18 years old, with a clean criminal record and funds from a legal source.
  • Family in one application: in St Kitts and Nevis the spouse, children under 18, children aged 18 to 30 in full-time study and supported by you, and parents from 55; Antigua and Barbuda includes parents over 55 at no extra contribution.
  • Visa history: St Kitts and Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda check whether a country whose visas their citizens do not need ever denied you a visa. A visa from that country received later settles it, so a UK or Schengen visa issued after an earlier denial opens the programme to you.
  • Checks: due diligence covers every family member from 16, from 12 in Antigua and Barbuda.

Documents Nigerians prepare

The list follows the Dominica citizenship unit; the other programmes ask for the same core set.

  • Police certificates for everyone from 16: from Nigeria as the country of birth and citizenship, from your country of residence and from any country where you lived for more than 6 months in the past 10 years. Nigerian missions abroad help with the Nigeria Police clearance.
  • Passports: colour copies of all passports you hold.
  • Civil documents: birth certificates, a marriage certificate or divorce papers.
  • Health: a medical certificate from a licensed doctor and an HIV test for everyone from 12.
  • Money: 12 months of bank statements, a bank reference letter and a notarised affidavit on the source of funds.
  • Background: proof of address, diplomas, a professional reference and 8 photos.

Police certificates and notarised affidavits take the longest, so they start first.

Step by step: from choosing a programme to the passport

  1. Choose the programme for your budget, family and travel plans, and check your visa history against its rules.
  2. Gather the documents, starting with police certificates.
  3. Submit through an authorised agent: every citizenship unit accepts applications only through an agent it licenses. We prepare your file, work with the licensed agent and follow the application through.
  4. Due diligence and interview: Dominica interviews everyone from 16 online, St Kitts and Nevis and Saint Lucia interview applicants too.
  5. Approval in principle: then you pay the contribution.
  6. Certificate of naturalisation and passport: you receive the certificate and apply for the passport.

A second citizenship through residence

The other route goes through a residence permit, permanent residence and naturalisation. It costs less but takes years of living in the country.
