Business accounts: Estonia

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, and careful preparation improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

Estonian company taxes

What is taxedRate 2026
Retained profit0%
Dividends and other distributions22/78 of the payout, i.e. 22% of pre-tax profit
VAT24%, registration from €40,000 turnover since the start of the year

While profit stays in the company, in accounts, equipment or securities, there is no tax. The reduced 14/86 rate for regular dividends was abolished from 2025. From €100,000 of profit the owner receives €78,000.

E-residency and the account

E-residency lets you run an Estonian company remotely but gives neither the right to live in Estonia nor tax status: the owner almost always remains resident where they live. Banks expect the company to have a link to Estonia: clients, staff or activity in the country. A tax resident is someone who spent 183 days or more in Estonia in 12 months.

Staff and VAT

Income tax of 22% is withheld from salary with the €700 monthly basic exemption, and the employer pays 33% social tax. When turnover since the start of the year exceeds €40,000, the VAT registration application is filed within three working days.

FAQ

Can a non-resident open a business account in Estonia?
Registering an Estonian company is easy; getting it a local bank account without a genuine link to the country is very hard. After the money laundering scandals of the late 2010s, Estonian banks largely withdrew from non-resident company business. Real chances exist for businesses with Estonian clients, staff or premises.
Does e-Residency give me a bank account?
No. E-Residency provides digital identity and access to state services; it does not oblige any bank to onboard you and does not by itself count as a link to Estonia. Many e-residents end up using licensed EU payment institutions rather than a traditional bank.
Can I use a payment provider instead of a bank?
Yes. An Estonian company can hold an account with a licensed EU payment or e-money institution, and for many that is the only workable route. Such an account handles settlements and incoming payments, but it carries no banking licence and no deposit guarantee. An EEA institution account is normally also accepted for paying in share capital.
Do I need an Estonian resident director?
Not by law, but if no board member lives in Estonia the company must appoint a local contact person. Banks look wider: where management, clients and staff actually sit. Management run entirely from abroad almost always means a refusal.
What tax does an Estonian company pay?
0% while profit is not distributed; on dividends 22/78 of the payout, i.e. 22% of pre-tax profit.
Does Estonian e-residency entitle you to an Estonian bank account?
No, banks expect a company link to Estonia; e-residency gives neither residence nor tax status.
What social tax does an Estonian employer pay?
33% on top of salary; 22% income tax is withheld from the employee with the €700 monthly exemption.
How much does an Estonian company owner get from €100,000 of profit?
€78,000 on paying dividends: €22,000 goes in tax at 22/78.
From what turnover is VAT registration required in Estonia?
From €40,000 since the start of the calendar year; the application is filed within three working days, the rate is 24%.
Was the reduced dividend rate abolished in Estonia?
Yes, the 14/86 rate for regular dividends was abolished from 2025; all distributions are now taxed at 22/78.
Does an Estonian company need an office in Estonia?
It needs a registered address in Estonia; for the bank a real link to Estonia matters: clients, staff or activity.
Does owning an Estonian company make you an Estonian tax resident?
No, the company alone gives no residency: a resident is someone who spent 183 days or more in Estonia in 12 months.
