Bank accounts

Pick your account type: business or personal. Below is what matters before choosing a country and bank.

Personal or business account

A personal account is for life: salary, rent, savings, buying a home. A business account is opened for a company, and the bank looks at its activity, clients and owners. They must not be mixed: regular client payments into a personal account are treated by the bank as business activity and lead to restrictions, and the tax authority asks questions. Almost everywhere a business account is opened only for a company registered in the same country, so choosing a bank often starts with choosing a country for the company.

What the bank checks for every client

  • Identity and address: passport and proof of residence.
  • Tax residency: where you live and pay taxes. This decides where the bank sends account information.
  • Source of funds: where the money comes from, such as salary, sale of assets or dividends. Large sums need documents.
  • Purpose and link to the country: why the account is needed here, such as a home, work, relocation or business.
  • Sanctions risk: nationality, counterparties and payment countries.

The bank must carry out these checks by law, and any inconsistency in documents turns into extra requests or a refusal.

Deposit protection: country comparison

Sums above the limit are spread across banks or held in instruments that do not depend on one bank's stability.

Restrictions for certain nationalities

Under EU Regulation 833/2014 banks in EU countries do not accept deposits over €100,000 from Russian nationals and residents of Russia unless they have EU citizenship or EU residence. Banks in other countries, such as Switzerland, apply similar rules. So for Russian nationals, choosing a country and bank starts with the residence question.

Exchange of tax information

Most countries participate in automatic exchange of tax information: the bank sends account and balance details to your country of tax residence. The US uses its own foreign account reporting law and itself receives data from foreign banks on its taxpayers' accounts. Plan any account on the assumption that your tax authority knows about it.

How to choose a country for your account

  1. Goal. Living in the country, holding savings, business, buying property.
  2. Status. Nationality, residence permit, tax residency.
  3. Currency and payments. Where money will come from and go to.
  4. Protection and reliability. The deposit insurance limit and the bank's stability.
  5. Chances of opening. How well your profile fits that country's banks.

FAQ

Which account do I need, personal or business?
Personal for living, salary, rent and savings. Business for a company's payments with clients and suppliers. They must not be mixed: the bank will restrict operations and the tax authority will ask questions.
Can I receive client payments into a personal account?
It breaches account terms and is a common reason for blocking. Regular client payments indicate business activity, which needs a company account.
Where are deposits best protected?
The US insures up to $250,000, Switzerland up to CHF 100,000, EU countries up to €100,000 per depositor per bank. Belarus guarantees 100% of individuals' deposits with no cap.
Why do bank checks slow account opening?
By law the bank establishes who you are, where the money comes from and why you need the account. Any inconsistency in documents leads to extra requests, so the file is prepared in advance.
Will the bank report my account to my tax authority?
In most countries yes, through automatic exchange of tax information. The US receives data on its taxpayers' accounts under its own law.
Are there deposit limits in the EU based on nationality?
