To work in Spain, a citizen of a country outside the European Union needs a residence and work permit. The employer applies for it in Spain, and once it is approved you collect the visa at a Spanish consulate and enter. The rules are the same for every nationality: the type of job, the contract and the employer's standing decide which route fits and how fast it moves.
We will work out online the investment or income your family needs and what the permit costs for each member.
Spain work permits compared
| Permit | Who it is for | Main condition | Length |

| Residence and work permit for employees | most jobs hired from abroad | a contract with a Spanish employer; a labour market test unless the job is on the shortage catalogue | up to 1 year, then 4 years |
| Highly qualified professional | managers and specialists | a degree or 3 years of relevant experience; decision in 20 days | up to 3 years, renewed for 2 |
| EU Blue Card | graduates and experienced specialists | a degree of at least 3 years or 5 years of experience, a contract of at least 6 months and a salary above the threshold | up to 3 years, renewed for 2 |

Residence and work permit for employees
This is the main route for hiring from abroad. The employer files at the foreigners' office of the province where the job is, with a signed contract on the official form, proof that the company has the means to pay the salary and proof of your qualifications. The contract follows the law and the collective agreement for the same job and area, and a part-time job pays at least the full-time minimum wage over the year. The employer is up to date with taxes and social security.
The labour market test is the main filter. The State Public Employment Service publishes a catalogue of hard-to-fill occupations for each region every quarter, and a job on that list goes straight to the permit. For other jobs, the employer posts the vacancy with the public employment service, which circulates it for 8 days before the foreigners' office reviews the case.
The office decides within 3 months. The first permit covers one region and one occupation for up to 1 year. The renewal is for 4 years and covers any job, employed or self-employed, anywhere in Spain.

Highly qualified professional permit
Managers and specialists take a faster route through the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit. You need a job that calls for a university degree or at least 3 years of relevant experience; there is no labour market test. The company or the professional applies online, and the unit decides within 20 days; if it does not answer in time, the permit counts as granted.
The permit runs for 3 years, or for the contract plus 3 months when the contract is shorter, and is renewed for 2 years. The spouse or partner, children and dependent parents apply at the same time and receive their permits together with the professional.
EU Blue Card
The Blue Card is for graduates with a degree of at least 3 years or for specialists with 5 years of relevant experience; IT managers and professionals qualify with 3 years of experience in the last 7. You need a contract or firm job offer of at least 6 months and a gross salary above the threshold set by regulation at 1 to 1.6 times the average gross annual salary in Spain. A threshold 20% lower applies to shortage professions among managers and professionals and to graduates who finished their studies within the last 3 years. Regulated professions need recognition of the diploma.
The family moves together with the cardholder. After 12 months with a Blue Card in another EU country, or 6 months across several, you apply for a Spanish Blue Card and start work as soon as the application is complete.
Intra-company transfer
An employee of an international group moves to a Spanish company of the same group without a new hiring process. The rules ask for at least 3 months of continuous work with the group and a degree or 3 years of relevant experience. Managers, specialists and trainees coming from outside the EU receive the EU intra-corporate transfer permit. The Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit handles the case, and groups that move staff often register for collective processing for 3 years.
How to find an employer in Spain
The shortest path is a job on the shortage occupations catalogue for the region: the employer applies for the permit without searching locally first. Specialists with a degree and experience do best with companies that already hire through the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit or the Blue Card, because they know the process. Look at the public employment portal, regional employment services and Spanish and international job boards. Check that the company has real activity, pays its taxes and contributions and is ready to sign the contract for the permit period.

Documents for a Spain work visa
- a passport valid for the whole permit period, the visa form and a photo
- the employment contract on the official form or a firm job offer with position, salary and length
- your diploma and proof of experience; for regulated professions, recognition of the diploma
- criminal record certificates from your country and the countries where you have lived in recent years
- health insurance for the specialist and Blue Card routes
- the employer's documents: tax number, registration and proof of means to pay the salary
Foreign documents go with an apostille or legalisation and a sworn translation into Spanish. Doctors, nurses, lawyers, architects and other regulated professions obtain diploma recognition before they start work.

Step by step: from job offer to arrival
| Step | Timing |
|---|---|
| The employer applies for the permit | up to 3 months, 20 days for specialists |
| You apply for the visa at a Spanish consulate | within 1 month of the approval |
| The consulate decides on the visa | up to 1 month |
| Entry and registration with social security | within 3 months of entry |
| The foreigner identity card, in person with fingerprints | within 1 month of registration |
The permit takes effect when the employer registers you with social security, which also gives you access to the public health system.
Bringing your family
Families of highly qualified professionals, Blue Card holders and transferred staff apply together with the worker and receive their permits at the same time. On the general route, the spouse or partner and children join through family reunification once the first permit has been renewed, with suitable housing and enough regular income for the family. A spouse, partner or child with a reunification permit works in Spain without any further permit.
Changing employer
On the general route, after 3 months and during the first year you move to a new employer in the same occupation. After the renewal, the 4-year permit covers any job anywhere in Spain, employed or self-employed. A highly qualified professional or Blue Card holder moving to a new company files the new position through the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit.

Support up to your Spain work visa
A Spanish application turns on the details: a job missing from the regional shortage list, a salary below the collective agreement or the Blue Card threshold, an employer behind on contributions, an unrecognised diploma, an expired criminal record certificate. We check the employer and the contract, choose between the general route, the specialist permit and the Blue Card, collect and translate the documents and follow the case through to the identity card.
Our consultant will quote the cost of support in the chat.

Moving to Spain without an employer
Without a Spanish employer, the routes are the digital nomad visa for remote work for a foreign company, the startup visa for founders of innovative projects and self-employment in Spain. Every route is in how to get residency in Spain, and what replaced the investor route is in Spain golden visa closed.
Spain work visa rules by nationality
The hiring process is the same for every citizen of a country outside the EU. International agreements free nationals of some countries from the labour market test, and children and grandchildren of Spaniards by origin are exempt from it too.
Nationals by origin of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea and Portugal apply for Spanish citizenship after 2 years of legal residence instead of 10.
From a work visa to long-term residence and citizenship
After 5 years of continuous legal residence you receive long-term residence, which gives the right to live and work in Spain on the same terms as Spaniards. Years with a Blue Card in other EU countries count towards it. Details are in permanent residence in Spain.
Citizenship by residence comes after 10 years, 2 years for Ibero-American nationals and 1 year after marriage to a Spaniard, with a Spanish exam at A2 and a test on the constitution and culture. Details are in Spanish citizenship and dual citizenship in Spain.
