Soles or dollars: which currency to send money to Peru in

Peru's currency is the sol, but the dollar works almost on equal terms here: banks keep accounts in both currencies, flat prices in Lima are often quoted in dollars, and the seller receives payment in the same currency. So money for a home is sent in dollars to a dollar account and paid without exchange, while money for living costs is exchanged into soles in parts.

Deposits in Peru are insured up to $36,000 (123,000 soles) per depositor in each bank: this is the limit for September-November 2026. The fund covers dollar deposits converted into soles, and the limit is reviewed every 3 months in line with wholesale prices. A large sum is kept in several banks before a deal.

Within Peru a transfer between banks goes by a 20-digit interbank account number: the recipient gets it from their bank and gives it to the sender together with their name. From abroad, the account number, the bank code and the recipient's name are enough.

Mistakes cost more than fees: dollars for a flat exchanged into soles and back with a double loss on the rate, the whole sum kept in one bank above the 123,000-sol insurance, the 3% tax left out of the budget and its deadline missed, a notary without statements showing the path of the money. We will help you avoid them: we choose a legal transfer route from your country, prepare the source-of-funds documents for the Peruvian bank and the notary and carry out the transfer through licensed partners through to crediting.

Details and terms are with a manager in the chat: the cost depends on the sum, the currency and the sending country.

A 3% tax when buying a flat in Peru and a levy on bank transactions

A home buyer in Peru pays a 3% municipal tax on the value above 10 tax units. In 2026 a unit equals 5,500 soles, so the first $17,000 (55,000 soles) of the price is not taxed. The base is the larger of two sums, the contract price or the municipal valuation, and payment is due by the last business day of the month following the purchase.

Flat priceIn solesBuyer's 3% tax
$100,000343,700$2,600 (8,661 soles)
$150,000515,550$4,100 (13,817 soles)
$250,000859,250$7,100 (24,128 soles)

Calculated at the rate of 7 October 2026 and the 2026 tax unit.

A bank in Peru withholds 0.005% from each account transaction, that is 0.05 soles per 1,000. On a $150,000 flat payment that is $10 (26 soles), and transfers between your own accounts at the same bank are exempt from this levy.
