How to send money to Dominica in 2026: an island with a dollar at 2.70, a contribution from $200,000 and a new tax
Money is sent to Dominica in US dollars or Eastern Caribbean dollars at 2.70, and the island must not be confused with the Dominican Republic, which has its own peso. The contribution under the region's most affordable citizenship programme is paid in 2026 within 30 days of approval, and from 2027 the island has announced a flat 10% tax rate.
In 2026 money is sent to Dominica by bank transfer in US or Eastern Caribbean dollars: it reaches a bank in Roseau in 1-3 business days, and the local currency is fixed at 2.70 per US dollar. Dominica is an island in the Lesser Antilles, easily confused with the Dominican Republic - a wrong country is the most common reason a transfer bounces.
The citizenship programme here is the most affordable in the region, with a contribution from $200,000, and for residents a flat 10% income tax rate has been announced from 1 January 2027. Transfer methods checked on 8 October 2026. Eastern Caribbean dollars are converted at 2.70 and rounded up.
| How to send | Status in October 2026 | Currency credited | Time | Why people choose it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer to a bank in Roseau | works | US dollars or Eastern Caribbean dollars | 1-3 business days | buying a home, living on the island, savings |
| Contribution to the Economic Diversification Fund | works after the application is approved | US dollars | about 30 days to pay | citizenship for $200,000 per person |
| Transfer to a Dominica company account | works | US dollars or Eastern Caribbean dollars | 1-3 business days | tourism, rentals, a business on the island |
| Money transfer service | works | US dollars or local currency | from a few minutes | help for loved ones, small amounts |
Dominica or the Dominican Republic: check the recipient's country
The Commonwealth of Dominica and the Dominican Republic are two different countries at opposite ends of the Caribbean Sea. Dominica uses the Eastern Caribbean dollar, pegged to the US dollar, while the Dominican Republic uses the Dominican peso with a floating rate. If the wrong country is chosen in the payment or a bank code from the neighbouring state is entered, the correspondent bank will not find the recipient and will return the money in 3-7 business days minus fees.
- in the recipient bank's international code, the fifth and sixth letters are the country code, and Dominica's differs from the Dominican Republic's;
- the recipient bank's address is Roseau or another town on the island, not Santo Domingo;
- the payment currency is US dollars or Eastern Caribbean dollars, not pesos;
- the recipient's name is written exactly as it appears at the bank.

From here on, the page covers only the island of Dominica with the Eastern Caribbean dollar. If you are not sure about the details, a manager will check the details before sending, so the money does not go to another country.
Money transfer services are the same: Dominica and the Dominican Republic sit next to each other in the country list, and a transfer sent to the wrong country cannot be collected on the island. Before sending, check the country, the recipient's name as in their passport and the currency credited - then the money arrives the same day.
A contribution from $200,000: the most affordable programme and 30 days to pay
Dominica has granted citizenship by investment since 1993, and its programme remains the most affordable among its neighbours. The contribution to the Economic Diversification Fund is $200,000 for a single applicant and $250,000 for a family of up to four; each additional child under 18 adds $25,000, and each family member aged 18 or over adds $40,000. With fees for processing, due diligence, the interview and the certificate, a single applicant spends about $210,000.
At first only the fees are sent: $1,000 for processing, $7,500 for due diligence on the main applicant and $4,000 for each family member aged 16 or over, and $1,000 for the interview of each person aged 16 or over. The contribution is sent after approval, and the approval itself is valid for about 30 days. A month is short for $200,000, so the money is gathered in one account in advance and the source-of-funds documents are prepared by the date of the letter. All options and amounts are on the Dominica citizenship page and in how much Dominica citizenship costs.
The real estate option also starts from $200,000, but a government fee is added to the property price: $75,000 for one person and $100,000 for a family of up to four. The property is held for 3 years, or 5 years when sold to another programme participant. The two neighbouring programmes are compared in Dominica or Saint Kitts and Nevis. So that the contribution reaches the fund within the 30 days, find out the transfer terms before approval.
Tax in Dominica: a scale up to 35% now and 10% from 2027
A transfer to Dominica itself is not taxed: tax is paid on income, not on money arriving. Today a resident of the island pays no tax on the first $12,000 (30,000 Eastern Caribbean dollars) a year. The next 20,000 are taxed at 15%, a further 30,000 at 25%, and everything above 80,000 at 35%.
In the budget presented on 4 August 2026, the government announced a flat 10% income tax rate from 1 January 2027 and an exemption for income earned abroad. For people moving to the island and sending themselves a pension, investment income or a salary from another country this is a notable difference: from 2027 such money will not be taxed in Dominica. A passport alone does not make you a tax resident: taxes are paid where you actually live.
A home on the nature island: a 10% licence and the deal
Dominica is called the nature island: it has mountains, hot springs and waterfalls, but few white-sand beaches. People here more often buy a house in the greenery than an apartment by the sea. A foreigner outside the citizenship programme obtains a landholding licence before the deal is registered, and it costs 10% of the price. For a $300,000 house that is another $30,000, sent together with the price.

Payment for a house goes to the seller's lawyer's account, and the payment purpose repeats the contract: number, date and property address. Property selection is on the property in Dominica page. If the house is bought through an island company, the transfer goes to its account: the company pays 25% corporate tax, and registering it costs about $280. The bank checks the first payment to a company account against the articles and the list of owners, so copies are sent to the bank in advance, and later transfers go through without questions. How to register such a company is on the company registration in Dominica page.
What a bank in Roseau asks at different amounts
A bank in Roseau asks different questions at each amount tier, in 2026:
| Transfer amount | What they ask | How to prove it |
|---|---|---|
| up to $10,000 (up to 27,000 Eastern Caribbean dollars) | the recipient and the purpose | separate papers are usually not requested |
| $10,000-100,000 | where the money comes from and how you know the recipient | statements, a contract, a salary or pension certificate |
| from $100,000 | the path of the money from its original source to your account | sale of a business or home, inheritance, dividends with tax returns |
The programme contribution and a home purchase fall straight into the top tier. It is easier to assemble one source-of-funds file: both the bank and the citizenship unit review it. A step-by-step guide to a large transfer is on the capital relocation page, and the documents are in proof of source of funds. Want to send a large sum without delays? Where money goes next from Dominica
A Dominica passport opens visa-free travel to more than 140 countries, including the Schengen area, Singapore and China. So money from the island often goes where the family lives or studies: to Europe, to Singapore or to the UAE. A US dollar account in Dominica makes the next transfer simpler: the currency is not exchanged twice.
