In short: who each country suits
- Georgia - for those living on foreign income or working as sole traders: 1% of turnover and no tax on income from abroad.
- Armenia - for those who want a second passport without giving up their current one, in about 6 years, or in months for ethnic Armenians.
- For anyone who needs visa-free Schengen travel, a Georgian passport is more useful than an Armenian one.
Georgia and Armenia are neighbours where you can arrive without a visa and start living straight away: both let citizens of many countries stay a long time with no permits. After that the paths split. Georgia wins on taxes and the sea, Armenia on the time to a passport and the right to keep your current citizenship.
Below is a 15-row table and five key differences: residence, the path to citizenship, taxes, cost of living and everyday life. Amounts are in US dollars on the check date.

Georgia and Armenia are chosen by tax on foreign income and the path to a passport
Both countries let foreigners stay a long time without a visa, but residence, taxes and the time to citizenship work differently. The usual mistakes: living for years without residence and not accruing time towards a passport, losing small business status in Georgia by exceeding turnover, and ignoring that an Armenian resident pays tax on worldwide income. We compare the options for your income and family and arrange residence and tax status.
The cost of support depends on the country, the ground and your family; a manager will calculate it in the chat.
Residence: where it is easier to get
Citizens of many countries can live in Georgia without a visa for up to a year and in Armenia for up to 180 days. Long-term life needs residence. Georgia grants it for property from $150,000 - the threshold rose from $100,000 on 1 March 2026 - for work and business, and for 5 years straight away with an investment from $300,000.
In Armenia residence is most often obtained through work or a sole trader registration. From 1 November 2026 sole trader residence requires 1 million drams, about $2,800, in the account or turnover. In Georgia foreigners have also needed a work permit since 2026.
Citizenship: where it is faster
In Armenia permanent residence follows 3 years of temporary residence, and citizenship 3 years of permanent residence, about 6 years in all. Ethnic Armenians get a passport within a few months without moving. You may keep your current citizenship and must notify the state within a month.
Georgia requires 10 years of residence, and a citizenship decree takes effect only after you leave your previous citizenship. Both passports can be kept only with citizenship granted as an exception by presidential decision.
Taxes: where they are lower
Georgia taxes residents only on Georgian income: salary or profit from abroad is not taxed. A sole trader with small business status pays 1% of turnover within the set limit, which is why so many relocated professionals work this way.
In Armenia a resident pays 20% on worldwide income, and a sole trader in services usually pays 10% of turnover. You become resident in Georgia after 183 days in any 12 months, in Armenia after 183 days in a calendar year.
Cost of living: where it is cheaper
A single person in Tbilisi needs $1,000-1,500 a month including rent, in Yerevan $1,200-2,200. A one-bedroom flat in an upmarket Tbilisi district costs $600-1,000, in central Yerevan about $940 on average.
In Yerevan central rents rose markedly after 2022 and remain high. Georgia has a second city by the sea, Batumi, where life is cheaper than in the capital outside the season.
Everyday life: banks, climate, schools
Georgia offers mountains, the sea and a mild climate in Tbilisi and Batumi. Banks open accounts for foreigners quickly but check the origin of funds. A Georgian passport gives visa-free access to the Schengen area.
Armenia is a mountainous country with hot summers and snowy winters in Yerevan, no sea but Lake Sevan. Banks and services are convenient for newcomers, and Russian is understood almost everywhere. The Armenian passport is weaker: 32 countries visa-free and 28 more with visa on arrival.
