Business accounts: Australia
An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.
We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, and careful preparation improves the odds.
We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.
An Australian company: what you need before the account
The account is opened for an Australian proprietary limited company. From 1 July 2026 registration costs AUD 636, about $450, and the regulator's annual review fee is AUD 342, about $240; late payment adds AUD 102 or 428. At least one director must ordinarily reside in Australia, and every director needs a director identification number before appointment. The company then gets a business number and registers for the 10% goods and services tax at a turnover of AUD 75,000.
We will calculate online the cost of opening an account for your company and maintaining it for a year.
Business visa 132 and the company account
The 132 business visa for entrepreneurs is closed to new applications, and the whole business program closed on 31 July 2024. A company account gives no visa: moving with a business is now planned through the talent visa, more on our Australia business visa 132 and talent visa page.
How opening the account works
- Incorporation documents, business number, ownership up to the ultimate beneficial owners.
- A business description, clients and contracts in Australia, expected turnover.
- Identity checks on directors and signatories; without a resident director banks usually refuse.
Corporate tax is 25% for small and medium businesses and 30% for others; more on our Australia taxes page.
A director from abroad: the director ID
A director living overseas applies for a director ID on a paper form with certified copies of documents, translated and apostilled where needed. Such applications take up to 56 business days, so the ID is obtained in advance, before the company is registered. Acting as a director without an ID is an offence carrying a fine of up to 60 penalty units.
Why Australian banks refuse
- No director ordinarily resides in Australia.
- No activity in the country: clients, contracts, an office or staff.
- Unclear source of capital or payments from high-risk countries.
- Ownership through several foreign companies without disclosing ultimate owners.
