Australia on the world map

In short: Australia has no residence for money - status comes through work, an occupation, achievements, study or family. The most common route is the 482 work visa and PR after 2 years; without an employer, the 189 and 190 points-tested visas; for people with international achievements, the 858 talent visa with PR straight away. Citizenship comes after 4 years in the country, one of them with PR.

How to get Australian residency and PR: every route in 2026

Australia has no single residence permit: each visa is a separate subclass with its own conditions. Some give permanent status straight away, others give the right to live and work for several years with a move to permanent status later. What decides the choice is whether you have an employer, an in-demand occupation with strong English, or outstanding achievements.

RouteWho it suitsTime to PRFee for the main applicant
Work visa 482a sponsoring employer and at least a year of experience2 years of work, then visa 186~$2,800
Employer visa 186an employer nominates you for a permanent positionimmediately~$4,300
Points-tested visas 189 and 190a listed occupation, age under 45, English, 65+ pointsimmediately~$4,300
Regional visa 491the same points plus living in a region3 years in the region, then a permanent visa~$4,300
Talent visa 858internationally recognised achievements, by invitationimmediately~$4,400
Student visa 500enrolment at an Australian university or collegeonly through another visa after study~$1,800
Partner visamarriage or a de facto relationship with a citizen or permanent residentvia a temporary stage~$8,200

Fees are the Department of Home Affairs base charges from 1 July 2026, converted into US dollars and rounded up. From that date almost all visas rose by about a quarter, and the partner visa became the most expensive mainstream visa. There are no investor programmes giving residence for investment in 2026.

Work visa 482 and PR through an employer

The most common route is through work. The 482 visa, or Skills in Demand visa, gives up to 4 years of work for the Australian employer sponsoring you. After 2 years of work you can apply for the permanent 186 visa if the employer is ready to nominate you for a permanent position.

  • Core stream - a salary of at least AUD 79,423 a year, about $56,000, and an occupation on the in-demand list.
  • Specialist stream - a salary of at least AUD 146,576, about $110,000, almost any occupation except trades.
  • Experience - at least a year in the occupation in the last 5 years.
  • English - a result from a recognised test.

The main difficulty is finding an employer: without one you cannot apply at all. If the job ends, you have up to 180 consecutive days to find a new sponsor. Streams, fees and timelines are covered on the Australian 482 work visa page, and the occupations in demand now in our review of in-demand occupations in Australia.

The 186 visa can also be granted without a temporary stage: if an employer is ready to nominate you for a permanent position straight away and you have a skills assessment and at least 3 years of experience, PR is granted immediately. Its fee is about $4,300.

Points-tested visas: 189, 190 and 491

If you have no employer but do have an in-demand occupation, strong English and are under 45, the route goes through the points system. Points are awarded for age, English, experience, education, study in Australia and language skills. The formal minimum is 65 points, but invitations go to those with more.

VisaWhat it givesFeature
189 - independentPR immediatelyno nomination or employer needed; the toughest competition
190 - state nominatedPR immediatelythe state adds points and expects you to live and work there
491 - regional5 years in a region, PR after 3 yearsmore points for the region, but you must live outside major cities

In practice the bar is above 65. In the invitation round of 4 June 2026 only construction occupations were invited at 65 points, nurses and teachers needed 75 and electronics engineers 95. For 2026-27 the 189 visa has 21,090 places. Before applying, the occupation is confirmed by a skills assessment from the relevant body, which takes from a few weeks to several months.

Talent visa 858: PR straight away

Australia gives people with internationally recognised achievements permanent status straight away, with no employer, investment or points test. This is the National Innovation visa, subclass 858, which replaced the former Global Talent visa on 7 December 2024.

  • Who: researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, athletes and artists with notable achievements.
  • How: first an expression of interest, then an invitation from Home Affairs, then a visa application within 60 days.
  • Nominator - a person or organisation with a national reputation in your field.
  • Fee - about $4,400 for the main applicant.

Competition is high: in April - June 2026 invitations went to 248 people out of 2,166 expressions of interest, about one in nine. The 2026-27 quota is 3,500 places. All conditions and documents are on the Australian talent visa page, and how the programme changed in our article on the global talent visa in 2026.

Business and investment: what is left

Australia no longer has a separate investor programme. The 132 business visa closed in 2021, and the business innovation and investment programme, which gave residence for investment and business, closed in 2024. Buying a flat for residence is not possible either: a foreigner's property purchase gives no status.

Entrepreneurs with outstanding achievements may qualify for the 858 talent visa, which covers investors and company founders with notable results. Those without such achievements are left with the work route and the points system. A company in Australia is registered online in a day, but at least one director must live in the country permanently, and the company itself does not give a visa.

Study as a route to residency

The 500 student visa gives the right to live in Australia while studying and to work up to 48 hours a fortnight during term. From 1 July 2026 the fee rose to about $1,800. You need enrolment at an accredited institution, health insurance for the whole stay, proof of funds for living and study, and English.

Study on its own does not give permanent status. After graduating you can get the 485 temporary graduate visa and work in the country, gaining experience and points, then apply for a points-tested or employer visa. The graduate visa fee is about $4,100. This route is long but suits young people who do not yet have the experience for a work visa.

Family: the partner visa and parents

The spouse or partner of an Australian citizen or permanent resident can get a partner visa. A de facto relationship is proven by state registration or documents showing at least 12 months of living together. A temporary visa comes first, and the permanent one after a check that the relationship continues.

From 1 July 2026 the partner visa costs about $8,200 for the main applicant - the most expensive mainstream visa. Parent visas exist, but queues are long and fees for faster options are high, so parents more often come on visitor visas.

How much Australian residency costs in 2026

Home Affairs fees rose by about a quarter on 1 July 2026. Below are the main charges for the main applicant, in US dollars and rounded up.

VisaFee
Work visa 482~$2,800, the same for each adult family member, a child ~$700
Permanent employer visa 186~$4,300
Points-tested visas 189, 190 and 491~$4,300
Talent visa 858~$4,400
Student visa 500~$1,800
Graduate visa 485~$4,100
Partner visa~$8,200

On top of fees come the skills assessment, the English test, the medical, police certificates and translations. We calculate the total for your family in the chat: it depends on the visa, the number of applicants and whether a skills assessment is needed. Murblz names the cost of its support after reviewing your situation.

Fees from $2,800; a refusal costs more

Mistakes cost more than the fees: the wrong occupation code, a skills assessment for the wrong visa, an English test that is not accepted, points that fall short of an invitation, experience documents that contradict the employer's nomination. After a refusal the fee is not refunded and preparation starts again. We choose the route for your experience and family, check the occupation and points, prepare documents and translations and handle the application through to a decision. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and we prepare the file for a result on the first application.

Which route to choose

  • You have a job offer - the 482 work visa, and after 2 years the permanent 186 visa.
  • No employer, but a listed occupation, English and age under 45 - points-tested visas 189 and 190, and if points fall short, the regional 491.
  • You have international achievements - the 858 talent visa, PR straight away.
  • You are young and without experience - study, the graduate visa and then a work or points-tested visa.
  • Your partner is a citizen or permanent resident - the partner visa.
  • You have only capital - Australia has no such route; look at other countries in our residence permits abroad section.

Often there are several routes, and the winner is the one that leads to permanent status faster. For example, a specialist with good English can lodge an expression of interest for a points-tested visa and look for an employer at the same time: whichever works first becomes the main route.

What Australian PR gives and when citizenship comes

  • live, work and study in Australia indefinitely;
  • public health insurance;
  • the right to sponsor relatives;
  • travel in and out for 5 years from the visa grant, after which a resident return visa is needed to come back.

Citizenship can be applied for after 4 years of living in Australia on a lawful visa, the last 12 months with PR. Absences over the 4 years may total no more than 12 months, including no more than 90 days in the last year. You must pass the citizenship test. Australia allows dual citizenship.

Taxes when moving to Australia

Tax residency in Australia depends on where you actually live, not on your visa type. A resident pays no tax on the first AUD 18,200 of income a year, then rates rise to 45%, with another 2% for public healthcare. A temporary visa holder pays tax only on Australian income, while a permanent resident pays on worldwide income.

So a move on a permanent visa should be planned together with taxes: what to do with foreign assets, accounts and income before getting the status. More on the taxes in Australia page.

Australian residency: nationality and checks

Australian visas have no nationality restrictions: citizens of Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and other countries apply on the general terms. The requirements are the same: occupation, experience, English, health and police certificates from every country where you lived 12 months or more in the last 10 years.

In practice, police certificates and proof of experience take the longest: employment records and employer references are translated into English, and their details must match the occupation code. You can apply from any country without an embassy: almost all visas are lodged online. A general overview of the country is in our Australia section.

How to get approved the first time

  • Experience is not documented or does not match the occupation code.
  • English below the required level or a test not on the accepted list.
  • Fewer points than competitors in the invitation round.
  • A contract salary below the 482 stream threshold.
  • Health, a criminal record or past breaches of Australian visa rules.
  • Incomplete information in the application, treated as an attempt to mislead.

Most refusals are predictable, so the occupation, points and documents are checked before applying, not after.

How we help

Mistakes cost more than the fees: the wrong occupation code, a skills assessment for the wrong visa, an English test that is not accepted, points that fall short of an invitation, experience documents that contradict the nomination. We choose the route for your experience and family, check the occupation and points, prepare documents and translations and handle the application through to a decision. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and in most cases a result on the first application.
