How to pay a supplier abroad in 2026: invoice, currency, timing
In 2026 a company or sole trader pays a foreign supplier's invoice under a contract, and a payment in the supplier's currency arrives in 2-5 business days. The bank needs the contract, the invoice and the specification, and the supplier's bank checks that the payer, the goods and the amount match the contract.
In short
- A company pays a foreign supplier's invoice under a contract, with the specification attached.
- A payment in the supplier's currency takes 2-5 business days through correspondent banks.
- The dirham is pegged at 3.6725 per dollar, and India has settled foreign trade in rupees through special accounts since July 2022.
- The supplier's bank asks 5 questions: who pays, for what, which goods, where the cargo goes and through which bank.
- The contract number, the invoice number and the goods in the payment purpose get the money through the first time.
In detail
Paying a supplier abroad in 2026 depends on 3 things: the contract amount, the invoice currency and the supplier's country. Below are the documents for the bank, the currencies of the 4 most frequent supplier countries, the timing and what the supplier's bank checks in an incoming payment.
What documents you need to pay a supplier abroad
The company's bank needs 4 documents to pay a supplier abroad. The contract sets the terms of the whole deal, and the invoice sets the amount of a specific payment.
- Contract: the parties, the goods, the price, the payment currency, the delivery date and terms.
- Invoice: number, date, amount due and the supplier's bank details.
- Specification: the goods, their quantity and their customs commodity codes.
- Payment order whose purpose quotes the contract and the invoice.
A sole trader pays the supplier from their business account under the same rules as a company. The payer is the company or sole trader named in the contract: the supplier's bank matches the payer against the party to the deal.
An invoice or a contract: what to choose for one-off and regular purchases
For a one-off purchase an invoice with the full terms of the deal is used: the goods, the quantity, the price, the currency and the delivery date. For regular deliveries a separate contract with specifications is more convenient: it is agreed once, and then each invoice is paid under it.
The payment purpose shows the contract number and date, the invoice number and a short description of the goods. That way the correspondent bank and the supplier's bank see the basis of the payment at once.
Which currency to pay the supplier in: yuan, dirhams, lira, rupees
The contract fixes the payment currency. If the supplier has issued the invoice in yuan and the company holds another currency, the bank converts it into yuan at its own rate on the day of payment.
Data for 2026.
- Yuan - China: the supplier receives them into its account without exchange.
- Dirhams - UAE: the dirham has been pegged to the dollar since 1997, at 3.6725 dirhams per dollar.
- Lira - Turkey: 49.20 lira per dollar at the Central Bank of Turkey rate of 7 October 2026.
- Rupees - India: since July 2022 the Reserve Bank of India has allowed foreign trade settlement in rupees through special accounts of partner banks.
The amount in your currency is calculated on the day the money is debited, so the payment currency is worth agreeing with the supplier before the contract is signed.
Timing: how long a payment to a supplier takes and which dates matter
A payment to a supplier in its currency takes 2-5 business days through correspondent banks.
The company keeps 2 contract dates in its calendar:
- The payment date under the invoice: prepayment or payment after delivery, as the contract states.
- The delivery date under the contract: the bank uses it to check that the goods arrived for the prepayment.
The delivery date is best set with a margin for transport and customs. If delivery shifts, the contract amendment goes to the bank straight after signing.
Paying a supplier in China, Turkey, the UAE and India
4 frequent supplier destinations, each with its own currency and details:
Checked: 9 October 2026.
| Supplier's country | Invoice currency | What matters | More detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| China | yuan | the supplier's bank checks the payment against the contract and the goods | sending money to China |
| Turkey | lira, dollars or euros | the supplier company's 10-digit tax number | sending money to Turkey |
| UAE | dirhams or dollars | 3.6725 dirhams per dollar, a fixed rate | sending money to the UAE |
| India | rupees | special accounts for rupee settlement since July 2022 | sending money to India |
A Chinese supplier issues the invoice in yuan to its company account at a Chinese bank. The supplier's bank checks that the payer, the goods and the amount match the contract, so the specification is sent to it together with a copy of the payment order.

A Turkish supplier puts its company's 10-digit tax number on the invoice, and its account number has 26 characters. Turkish companies choose the invoice currency under the contract: lira, dollars or euros.
A supplier in the UAE is paid in dirhams or dollars: the dirham is pegged to the dollar, so the amount in both currencies matches. An account number at an Emirati bank has 23 characters.
An Indian supplier receives rupees into its account without exchange. Since 11 July 2022 Indian banks have opened special rupee accounts for partner banks to settle foreign trade.

What the supplier's bank asks: 5 questions
The supplier's bank asks 5 questions about an incoming payment.
- Who pays: the paying company matches the party to the contract.
- For what: the payment purpose carries the contract number, the invoice number and the goods.
- Which goods: the description and the commodity code match the specification.
- Where the cargo goes: the delivery address and terms match the contract.
- Through which bank: the payer's bank and the correspondent bank through which the money came.
The answers to all 5 questions are already in the contract, the invoice and the specification. Sending this set of documents to the supplier in advance speeds up the credit.

- Agree the currency, the price, the delivery date and the paying party with the supplier.
