How to send money to Mauritania in 2026: the ouguiya rate, the Central Bank band and the new ouguiya since 2018

5 min read ·

In 2026 money is sent to Mauritania by bank transfer to a dollar or euro account in 1-3 business days; the recipient exchanges it into ouguiya at the bank's rate within the Central Bank band. Under $10,000 the bank cares who receives it and why; from $10,000 it asks where the sum came from.

In detail

Money is sent to Mauritania to an account at a Mauritanian bank in dollars or euros, and exchanged into ouguiya at the rate the Central Bank of Mauritania publishes every business day: on 7 October 2026 it was 40.05 ouguiya per dollar and 44.81 per euro. A transfer takes 1-3 business days, and the recipient gives the account number, the bank name and their name. The rate has barely changed over the year.

The ouguiya rate: the reference rate and the fluctuation band

Every business day the Central Bank of Mauritania announces the ouguiya reference rate on the interbank market and, with it, the band within which banks exchange currency. On 7 October 2026 the band ran from 36.86 to 40.74 ouguiya per dollar. Over the year the rate moved by less than half a percent:

DateOuguiya per dollar
1 October 202539.88
7 October 202539.91
28 September 202640.06
1 October 202640.04
7 October 202640.05

Central Bank of Mauritania reference rates. Over the year the dollar rose against the ouguiya by 0.35%, so $1,000 still gives 40,050 ouguiya today and $10,000 gives 400,500. The amount for the recipient can be planned months ahead.

The new ouguiya since 2018: one new for ten old

On 1 January 2018 the Central Bank of Mauritania removed one zero from the ouguiya: 10 old ouguiya became 1 new, and all rates since then are published in new ouguiya. Old banknotes were exchanged for new ones until the end of 2018. Amounts in contracts and receipts drawn up before 2018 are divided by 10:

In old ouguiyaIn new ouguiyaIn dollars at the rate of 7 October 2026
10,0001,000$25
1,000,000100,000$2,500
10,000,0001,000,000$25,000

Converted under the Central Bank of Mauritania rule, dollars at the reference rate of 40.05 and rounded up. The price of a plot or house in an old deed is compared with today's prices only after this conversion.

All amounts on the recipient's account and in a Mauritanian bank's receipts are in new ouguiya, so conversion is needed only for papers drawn up before 2018.

We will help you send money to Mauritania

Mistakes cost more than fees: an amount from an old contract not converted into new ouguiya, currency exchanged twice on the way, a transfer sent through a chain of banks with extra fees, a Mauritanian bank with no papers on the origin of the money. We will help you avoid them: we choose a legal transfer route from your country, prepare source-of-funds documents for the Mauritanian bank and carry out the transfer through licensed partners until it is credited.

Details and cost are with a manager in the chat: the calculation depends on the amount, the currency and the sending country.
