US visa revoked: what to do in 2026

10 min read ·

More than 300,000 revoked visas, 125,000 of them in the last ten weeks alone. Why US visas get revoked, what to do if the consulate emails you, and which routes to America remain open.

In short

  • On October 20, 2026 the US State Department said it had revoked more than 300,000 visas since January 2025.
  • The pace is speeding up: the count stood at 175,000 on August 10, 2026, so at least 125,000 revocations came in ten weeks.
  • The total includes 6,000 student visas and at least 4,000 visas linked to birth tourism.
  • A revoked visa cannot be used to enter the US, even if the printed expiry date has not passed. A new visa is possible, but you will have to explain the revocation.

In detail

A US visa in your passport no longer means you will get into the United States. On October 20, 2026 the US State Department said it had revoked more than 300,000 visas since January 2025. That is roughly the population of Pittsburgh and, in the words of department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, faster than any administration in history.

The speed matters more than the number. The count stood at 85,000 in December 2025, 175,000 on August 10, 2026 and 250,000 by late September. At least 125,000 revocations came in the ten weeks from August to October, roughly 1,800 a day. If you hold a valid US visa or plan to apply for one, here is why visas get revoked, what to do after a consulate email and which routes to America work right now.

What happened

The State Department confirmed the 300,000 figure after a White House summary. It does not publish a full breakdown by country, visa type or reason, but several groups are named directly:

  • 6,000 student visas held by foreign students the administration links to crimes or support for terrorism;
  • at least 4,000 visas held by people who took part in or facilitated birth tourism;
  • more than 700 visas of Chinese nationals revoked by a dedicated birth tourism task force set up in August 2026.

The department's official line is zero tolerance for foreigners who break the law, commit fraud or undermine national security. In practice that covers a lot: drunk driving, a fight, theft, overstaying an authorised stay, lying on the application, working on a tourist visa.

Why visas are being revoked on this scale

A visa used to be checked once, at the interview. Since August 2025 the State Department has been continuously vetting everyone who holds a valid US visa, more than 55 million people. Police databases, immigration records and any new information are checked after the visa is issued. Put simply, the interview is no longer an exam, it is the start of monitoring.

The second reason is social media. Since October 1, 2026 online presence review covers students (F and M visas), exchange visitors (J), H-1B workers and their families (H-4), Canadian and Mexican professionals (TN and TD) and journalists (I). They are told to make every profile public. A private account may be read by a consular officer as an attempt to hide something.

The third is tip-offs. On September 23, 2026 the State Department launched a portal where anyone can report suspected visa fraud. A jealous ex with an internet connection is now part of US visa policy too.

Why a US visa gets revoked

The legal basis is section 221(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA, the main US immigration law). It allows the Secretary of State to revoke a visa at any time, at their discretion. The law requires no court, no warning and no right of appeal. The most common reasons:

ReasonExampleHow avoidable
Arrest or criminal caseDrunk driving, assault, theft, even without a convictionEntirely up to you
Breaking the terms or purpose of the visaOverstaying the I-94 date, working or giving birth on a tourist visaEntirely up to you
False statements on the DS-160A hidden past refusal, an invented employerEntirely up to you
Social media and public statementsSupport for organisations banned in the US, calls for violencePartly: the criteria are vague
New security informationA database match, links to sanctioned individualsLargely outside your control

The I-94 is the electronic arrival record where border officers note the date until which you may stay. Visa validity and permitted stay are different things: a three-year visa does not let you live in the US for three years straight. Mixing them up is one of the most common sources of trouble.

What to do if your US visa is revoked

Revocation is usually announced by a consulate email to the address on your application. Sometimes people only find out at check-in or at the border. What comes next depends on where you are.

  • You are outside the US. Do not fly: a revoked visa is invalid even if the printed expiry date has not passed. The airline will not board you, and if it does, the border officer will turn you around. The only route is a new DS-160, a new interview and an honest answer about the revocation.
  • You are in the US. Revocation does not always end your lawful stay immediately: that is defined by your I-94 record and, for students, by the SEVIS record (the database of schools and foreign students). But section 237(a)(1)(B) of the same law allows removal proceedings against a person whose visa has been revoked. Do not leave or try to extend your status at random; review the situation with a lawyer first.
  • You are a student or a worker. Contact your university's international office (the DSO, the official responsible for foreign students) or your employer right away. Working without authorisation at this point turns a fixable problem into a permanent one.

A new visa is possible if the reason for revocation can be resolved: the case is closed, the application error is explained, the stay is no longer violated. Hiding a past revocation is pointless: the officer can see it, and a false statement on the application closes the door to US visas for a long time.

How Russians can get a US visa now

Since September 2025 nonimmigrant visa applicants must apply in their country of nationality or residence. Russians without foreign residence have two options: the US embassies in Warsaw and Astana. Getting to Poland without a Schengen visa is hard for a Russian citizen, so in practice Kazakhstan is the main gateway.

People with residence elsewhere have it easier: they apply where they live. That makes Kazakhstan residence or Serbian residence useful not only for living but also for a US visa. In addition, since August 3, 2026 visa bonds of up to 20,000 dollars apply to nationals of 50 countries: details are in our review of the new US visa rules. We prepare applicants for the interview with all of this in mind as part of our US tourist visa service.

Birth tourism: a target of its own

4,000 revoked visas are linked to births in the US. In August 2026 the President signed two executive orders against birth tourism, and a tourist visa used to give birth to an American child is now an almost certain reason for revocation. Lying about the purpose of the trip at the interview closes the US for a long time.

If your goal is a second citizenship for your child, the more honest and reliable choice is a country where a foreign mother giving birth is a legal, open scenario: giving birth in Argentina or giving birth in Brazil. There the purpose of the trip does not need hiding, and the child acquires citizenship by place of birth.

Which routes to the US work now

The crackdown hits short-term visas first. Long-term statuses, where the basis is checked in advance, work as before:

RouteWhat it givesWho it suits
O-1 visaA work visa for people with extraordinary achievementsScientists, tech specialists, entrepreneurs, artists
EB-2 NIW green cardPermanent residence without an employer, in the US national interestSpecialists with a strong academic or professional record
E-2 visaLiving and running a business in the US by investing in your own companyCitizens of treaty countries such as Grenada or Turkey
EB-5 green cardPermanent residence for an investment from 800,000 dollarsInvestors with a documented source of funds

Russia has no E-2 treaty with the US, so a Russian gets this visa through a second citizenship. The fastest options are Grenada citizenship and Turkish citizenship by investment. A Grenada passport also gives visa-free access to the Schengen area and the UK; the full list is in our guide to visa-free countries with a Grenada passport. All programmes are on our second passport page, and routes to permanent residence are in how to get US residency.

FAQ

How many visas has the US revoked?
According to the US State Department, more than 300,000 visas were revoked between January 2025 and October 20, 2026. The count was 85,000 in December 2025 and 175,000 on August 10, 2026. The total includes 6,000 student visas and at least 4,000 visas linked to birth tourism.
How do I know if my US visa has been revoked?
The consulate usually emails the address on your DS-160 application. Sometimes people only learn about it at check-in or at the border. If you receive such an email, do not travel to the US on that visa: it is invalid even if the printed expiry date has not passed.
Can I get a US visa again after a revocation?
Yes, if the reason has been resolved: the criminal case is closed, the application error is explained, there are no further overstays. You file a new DS-160, attend a new interview and disclose the revocation honestly, because the officer already knows about it.
What happens if my visa is revoked while I am in the US?
Lawful stay is defined by your I-94 record and, for students, the SEVIS record, so revocation does not always end your status immediately. However, the law allows removal proceedings against a person whose visa has been revoked. Do not leave or change status without advice from a US immigration lawyer.
Where can a Russian citizen apply for a US visa in 2026?
Russians without foreign residence apply at the US embassies in Astana or Warsaw. If you hold residence in another country, such as Kazakhstan or Serbia, you can apply where you live.
