In the UK a residence permit is called permission to stay: it is granted for 2 to 5 years under a specific visa and recorded in a digital profile, with no plastic cards any more. The route decides everything: whether you can work, bring family and when you can apply for settlement.
The country has no golden visa: the investor visa closed in 2022, and buying a home gives no status. The working routes are an offer from a licensed sponsor, the Global Talent visa, an endorsed business, study and family. Since 2025 the rules have been tightening: the salary threshold has risen, English is required at upper-intermediate level, and the government intends to double the time to settlement.
Below: all routes in one table, then the conditions, documents and pitfalls of each, the health surcharge, fees, reasons for refusal and the path to citizenship.
We will work out online the investment or income your family needs and what the permit costs for each member.

"From" is the visa fee per applicant when applying from abroad, excluding the health surcharge. Processing time runs from biometrics to the decision; for an extra fee the decision is speeded up to 5 working days.
Employment: the Skilled Worker visa
The most common route. You need three things: an employer with a sponsor licence, a job at degree level and a salary no lower than the threshold, from $56,000 a year or more if the going rate for the occupation is higher. Lower thresholds apply to new entrants and some occupations. Since 8 January 2026 English is required at upper-intermediate level.
The employer issues a Certificate of Sponsorship, after which you apply for the visa. It lasts up to 5 years and can be extended. Family comes along, and a spouse may work without restrictions. Since April 2026 the salary is checked in every pay period, not just annually.
- Certificate of Sponsorship from the employer
- English test certificate or a degree taught in English
- statement showing $1,700 held for 28 days, unless the sponsor certifies maintenance
- criminal record certificate for some occupations and a tuberculosis test for citizens of some countries
Pitfalls: the visa is tied to the employer; if you lose the job you have 60 days to find a new sponsor.
Global Talent visa
For recognised and emerging leaders in science, digital technology, arts and culture. No employer is needed: first a specialist body endorses the applicant, then you apply for a visa of up to 5 years.
The holder can work for anyone, run a business and change activities without notifying the Home Office. Settlement is possible after 3 years, or 5 years for those endorsed as showing promise. Details are on our UK Global Talent visa page.
- CV and recommendation letters from recognised experts
- evidence of achievements: publications, awards, products, revenue
- the endorsement application and then the visa application
Pitfalls: endorsement is the hardest stage, and a refusal there does not bring the fee back.
Your own business: the Innovator Founder visa
There is no minimum investment, but the business must be new to the UK market, viable and scalable. One of the authorised endorsing bodies confirms this: the endorsement and two mandatory meetings cost about $2,700.
The visa is granted for 3 years, and the founder may also work outside the business in a skilled role. After 3 years, if the plan's targets are met, you can apply for settlement. Details are on our UK founder visa page.
- business plan and endorsement letter
- English language certificate
- statement showing $1,700 held for 28 days
Pitfalls: an ordinary shop or consultancy with no new product will not be endorsed.
Graduates of top global universities
Those who graduated in the last 5 years from a university on the list of the world's best get a 2-year visa with no job offer, or 3 years with a doctorate. You can work, look for work or start your own business.
This visa does not lead to settlement: within 2 years you need to switch to a work visa or the Global Talent visa.
- degree verification through the UK qualifications assessment centre
- English language certificate
- statement showing $1,700 in the bank
Pitfalls: the list of universities is updated every year, and the degree must have been awarded in a year when the university was on it.
Study
A student visa is granted on a place at a licensed institution. You must show the first year's tuition and living funds for 9 months: about $19,000 for London and about $14,000 for the rest of the country. The money must be held in the account for 28 days.
A student may work up to 20 hours a week during term. Only doctoral students and those on research programmes may bring family. After graduation the Graduate visa is available: 2 years, or 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027.
- Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from the institution
- statement showing funds held for 28 days
- English language certificate
- tuberculosis test for citizens of some countries
Pitfalls: years of study do not count towards the 5 years for settlement.
Marriage and family
The spouse or partner of a British citizen or settled resident gets a visa for 2 years and 9 months when applying from abroad, then extends it for 2.5 years. The sponsor must earn at least $39,000 a year; substantial savings can be counted instead of income.
You need basic English, accommodation and evidence of a genuine relationship. After 5 years you can apply for settlement.
- marriage certificate or evidence of 2 years of living together
- the sponsor's income documents for 6 months
- English language certificate
- accommodation documents
Pitfalls: if income is below the threshold, the route to settlement stretches to 10 years.
UK ancestry and other routes
Commonwealth citizens with a grandparent born in the UK get a 5-year visa with the right to work and to apply for settlement.
There are also visas for employees of fast-growing companies, for intra-group transferees and temporary work visas for young people from countries with agreements, but not all of them lead to settlement. The investor visa closed on 17 February 2022; what remains for those who hold it is covered on our UK residency by investment page.
- birth certificates along the ancestral line
- proof of intent to work and funds for the first months
Pitfalls: you cannot arrive as a tourist and switch to a work status inside the country; you apply from abroad.
Health insurance for a residence permit
Instead of insurance, the UK charges a health surcharge: about $1,400 a year per adult and about $1,100 a year for a student or child. It is paid at application for the whole visa at once; for a 5-year work visa that is about $6,900 per person.
The surcharge gives access to the National Health Service on the same terms as residents: doctor visits and hospital care are free, and prescriptions in England carry a small flat charge. Private insurance is not needed for the visa; people take it for shorter waits to see specialists.
Health and care workers on their own visa are exempt from the surcharge. Those coming for under 6 months as visitors do not pay it, but they pay for treatment themselves, so an ordinary travel policy is taken for the trip.
Fees and timelines: what residency in the UK costs
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Skilled Worker visa up to 3 years | ~$1,100 |
| Skilled Worker visa over 3 years | ~$2,200 |
| Global Talent visa | ~$1,100 |
| Innovator Founder visa | ~$1,900 |
| Business endorsement with two meetings | ~$2,700 |
| Student visa | ~$750 |
| Spouse visa | ~$2,800 |
| Health surcharge, adult | ~$1,400 a year |
| Settlement | ~$4,300 |
| Citizenship | ~$2,300 |
Fees are per applicant when applying from abroad; they are higher inside the country. On refusal the visa fee is not refunded, while the health surcharge is. The English test, tuberculosis test and translations are paid separately. A manager will work out the total for your family in the chat.
In the UK an inaccuracy on the form means a ban of up to 10 years
The law does not prevent you from applying for a visa on your own. But mistakes cost more than the fees: money held in the account for fewer than 28 days voids the application, a salary below the threshold for the specific occupation leads to refusal, and a concealed past refusal is treated as deception and bars entry for up to 10 years. Fees are not refunded on refusal. Murblz support removes these risks: we match the visa to your profession and budget, check statements, the sponsor and English before you pay, prepare the business plan for endorsement and manage extensions through to settlement. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and in most cases a result on the first filing.
The support fee depends on the visa and family size; a manager will calculate it in the chat.
Common reasons for refusal
- money held in the account for fewer than 28 days, or the balance below the threshold on even one day
- the salary in the offer is below the threshold for the specific occupation
- the employer has no valid sponsor licence, or the job is at the wrong skill level
- an English certificate not from an approved test centre
- too little evidence of a genuine relationship for a spouse visa
- a business with no new product failed endorsement
- concealed past refusals and breaches: deception brings an entry ban of up to 10 years
A refusal can be challenged through administrative review, but it only checks for a caseworker error, not new documents. That is why we check the file before the fees are paid: there is no refund on refusal.
Restrictions for certain nationalities
The visas are open to citizens of all countries, but entry rules differ. Citizens of the European Union, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and some other countries need only an electronic travel authorisation for a trip of up to 6 months. Citizens of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, China, India and many others need a visa for any trip.
For long-term visas, citizens of some countries, including Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, China and India, must take a tuberculosis test at an approved clinic. A degree not taught in English does not replace a language certificate, while citizens of majority English-speaking countries are exempt from the test.
The UK Ancestry visa is only for Commonwealth citizens, and temporary work visas for young people only for citizens of countries with agreements, within quotas.
Path to permanent residence and citizenship in the UK
Settlement is currently granted after 5 years on a work visa, a spouse visa or the Ancestry visa, and after 3 years on the Global Talent and Innovator Founder visas. You need the Life in the UK test, English and no more than 180 days abroad in any 12 months. The fee is about $4,300.
The government is preparing a reform: the standard time to settlement on most work visas would rise from 5 to 10 years, with reductions for high earnings and economic contribution. The rules in force on the filing date apply, so those whose 5 years are nearly up should not delay.
You can apply for citizenship 12 months after settlement; spouses of British citizens can apply straight away. Dual citizenship is allowed. Details are on our British citizenship by naturalisation page.
