Business accounts: Peru

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

Peru is one of Latin America's most stable economies, with low inflation and a strong central bank. Banks are supervised by the Superintendency of Banking, Insurance and Pension Funds, and payments are made in both soles and dollars: the economy is highly dollarised, so a company account is usually opened in both currencies. A business account here is opened for a Peruvian company: trade, mining contractors, agriculture and exports, tourism, services.

What the bank will check

  • The company's tax number with the tax authority and its status: active and with a confirmed address.
  • A National Registry extract on the company's formation and the representatives' powers.
  • Representatives' IDs: in practice the bank and the tax authority need a representative with a Peruvian ID card or foreigner's card.
  • Ultimate beneficial owner details, which companies file with the tax authority.
  • Business description, contracts, payment countries and currencies, source of the share capital.

Features of Peruvian payments

  • By law payments above 2,000 soles or $500 go through a bank: such cash payments cannot be deducted as expenses.
  • A financial transactions tax of 0.005% is withheld on every account transaction.
  • Suppliers of certain goods and services open a separate account at the state-owned National Bank: buyers transfer part of the payment there, and the company pays its taxes from that money.
  • Dollar accounts are common for domestic payments too.

The company and residence

A foreigner who invests at least 500,000 soles, about $145,600, in a Peruvian company can obtain investor residence. The company must be operating: the Migration Service looks at the previous year's tax return and the municipal licence. With residence the owner receives a foreigner's card, and the bank serves them as a resident.

Who gets refused

The bank will refuse if the company has no active tax number and confirmed address, if the representative has no Peruvian ID, if the source of capital cannot be proven with documents, or if the company, its owners or counterparties are linked to sanctions. We check whether the bank works with your citizenship before preparing documents.
