Business accounts: Portugal
An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.
Portugal is a eurozone EU country where banks are supervised by the Bank of Portugal and European banking supervision. A business account at a Portuguese bank is almost always opened for a Portuguese company: capital is paid into it, client payments arrive there and taxes are paid from it. For foreign owners and directors the first step is a tax number (NIF), without which a bank will open an account neither for the company nor for an individual.
Business taxes in Portugal in 2026
- Corporate income tax (IRC) is 19% in 2026. The government is cutting the rate by 1 percentage point a year, aiming at 17% by 2028.
- Small and medium companies pay 15% on the first EUR 50,000 of taxable profit, about $56,020.
- Distributions to owners and salaries are taxed separately, so we plan the payout structure in advance.

The company and the account
A Portuguese company is registered in one visit at the On-the-Spot Firm service for a EUR 360 fee, about $404, or online for EUR 220, about $247, with a model articles of association, or EUR 360 with custom articles. A limited company's capital can be symbolic, but the bank looks at real money in the account and the business plan. More in company registration in Portugal.
Business immigration on the startup visa
If you are moving to Portugal with your own project, the startup visa links the company, the account and residence: the state innovation agency approves the project, the founder proves funds, and the company opens an account with a Portuguese bank. See Portugal startup visa.
