Business accounts: Monaco

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

Monaco's banks focus on private banking and wealth management, as well as payments for companies operating in the Principality. Accounts are in euros and Monaco is part of the Single Euro Payments Area, so transfers across Europe work like domestic ones. Banks operate under French banking law and anti-money laundering is supervised by Monaco's Financial Security Authority (AMSF), so client checks here are among the strictest in Europe.

Who Monaco banks open company accounts for

CompanyChancesWhat the bank cares about
A Monaco company with an office and government authorisationhighauthorisation, office, business plan, source of capital
A holding company of a Monaco-resident ownerhighsize of assets, link to a personal account at the same bank
A foreign company with no link to Monacolowwhy a Monaco bank is needed; usually only with large assets under management

A new Monaco company needs an account before registration: capital is paid into it, and the bank issues a deposit certificate for the articles and the register.

We will calculate online the cost of opening an account for your company and maintaining it for a year.

What the bank checks

  • The Business Development Agency's authorisation, articles of association, RCI register extract.
  • Beneficial owners and manager: passports, address, CVs, links to public office.
  • Owners' source of wealth: business sale, dividends, inheritance - with documents.
  • The business: client contracts, counterparty countries, expected turnover.
  • Office and staff in Monaco for a company operating in the Principality.

Document requirements

  • Corporate documents of foreign owners - apostilled and translated into French.
  • Register extracts and proof of address - usually no older than three months.
  • Passport copies certified by a notary or by the bank at the meeting.
  • For multi-level ownership - a structure chart with shareholdings and documents for each intermediate company.
  • For trusts and foundations in the chain - constitutional documents and details of the settlor, trustee or council and beneficiaries.

The most common cause of delay is not refusal but follow-up requests: the bank comes back with questions when documents are old, untranslated or the source of capital is explained only in general terms. So we build the file with answers to the typical questions in advance.

Timeline and process

StageWhat happensTime
1. Assessment and bank choicewe choose a bank for the activity and amount1 week
2. Document filecorporate documents, owners' documents, business and source of funds description1-3 weeks
3. Meeting and reviewthe bank usually meets the manager and owners in person2-6 weeks
4. Openingaccount details, online banking, cardsup to 2 weeks

Overall opening takes 1-3 months, longer for complex structures with several owners.

Deposit protection

Monaco banks are part of the French deposit guarantee scheme: up to €100,000, about $112,100, per depositor per bank, and this covers companies too. Balances above that amount banks usually offer to place under management.

Why Monaco banks refuse

  • The company has no government authorisation or office in Monaco.
  • The source of capital is not fully evidenced.
  • The activity is higher risk: crypto, gambling, arms, complex trading.
  • Owners are from sanctioned or higher-risk countries.
  • Expected turnover does not match the company's profile.

How we help

We assess whether your company suits Monaco banks, choose a bank for the activity and amount, prepare the corporate documents and source of capital file, arrange the bank meeting and answer the bank's questions until a decision. If there is no Monaco company yet, we tie the account opening to government authorisation and registration.

FAQ

Can a company open an account in Monaco?
Yes, most easily a Monaco company with government authorisation and an office in the Principality. Foreign companies with no link to Monaco are rarely accepted, usually only with large assets under management.
Are an office and staff in Monaco needed?
For a Monaco company, yes: the office is a condition of authorisation, and the bank checks real activity in the Principality. Requirements are softer for a resident owner's holding company.
What does the bank ask during review?
The company's authorisation and articles, owners' and manager's documents, source of capital, contracts and counterparty countries, and expected turnover.
How long does opening take?
Usually 1-3 months including document preparation and an in-person meeting with the bank, longer for complex structures.
Is company money protected at a Monaco bank?
Yes, Monaco banks are part of the French deposit guarantee scheme: up to €100,000, about $112,100, per depositor per bank, including companies.
What currency is the account in and how do transfers work?
The main currency is the euro, with dollar and other currency accounts on request. Monaco is in the Single Euro Payments Area, so euro transfers across Europe work like domestic ones, usually same or next day.
Why does a new company need an account before registration?
Capital is paid into it - from €15,000 for a SARL - and the bank issues a certificate without which the register will not record the company.
