13 ways to obtain residency in Argentina in 2025

6 min read ·

Argentina is one of the largest and most economically developed countries in Latin America. It borders Chile to the west, Paraguay and Bolivia to the north, and Brazil and Uruguay to the east, while its southeastern coast is washed by the Atlantic Ocean. Its name comes from the Latin argentum, meaning silver, and the Greek argentos, meaning white. This is the homeland of tango and some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world.

Grounds for Argentine residency

Person of independent means (financial self-sufficiency)

If you have passive income sourced outside Argentina - at least USD 2,000 per person - you can apply for Argentine residency.

Employment

If you hold an employment contract with a company registered in the country, you can apply for Argentine residency.

Family reunification

If one of your relatives - a spouse or child - is a resident of Argentina, you can apply for residency under the family reunification program.

Scholars and specialists

Foreign specialists engaged in scientific, research or technical work can apply for residency. An employment contract is required as supporting proof.

Athletes and performers

To obtain residency, athletes and performers need an employment contract with a company where they will work in their field.

Academics

Academics need a contract with a higher education institution in order to apply for Argentine residency.

Pensioners

Foreign nationals who receive a pension from outside Argentina can apply for residency. You will need to confirm monthly payments of at least USD 2,000.

Students

There is a route even for those who are not looking for lengthy, serious study: short courses included on the Ministry of Education's official list. Courses can be changed, which allows you to keep renewing your residency.

Patients

Foreign nationals who require medical treatment in Argentina are granted residency. As proof, you will need to provide a medical history stating the diagnosis and a plan for the treatment to be carried out.

MERCOSUR citizenship

If you are a citizen of Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana or Suriname, you can apply for Argentine residency.

Religious representatives

A letter from your religious organization is required.

Investment

The minimum investment is USD 5,370.

Humanitarian grounds

Argentina offers protection and accepts refugees, granting them residency valid for two years.

The advantages of Argentine residency

  • A tolerant society
  • Democracy and respect for human rights and freedoms
  • High-quality free education and healthcare
  • An excellent business environment
  • A comfortable climate
  • A straightforward relocation process

One of the best citizenships by investment - Paraguay

Strategically located and open to the world, Paraguay is a country of opportunity. Citizenship by investment gives foreign nationals and their families a unique chance to obtain permanent residency for an investment from 70,000 US dollars, then a passport no earlier than three years of living in the country as a permanent resident, and enjoy all its benefits: visa-free travel to 145 countries, including the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom and Singapore; eligibility for the US E-2 visa; tax optimization (a 10% rate); and life in a country with a high standard of living and a favorable climate.

What changed since 2025

  • Under Decree of Necessity and Urgency No. 366/2025 permanent residence requires proof of sufficient means and no criminal record; automatic routes via marriage or an Argentine child no longer exist in their old form, and family reunification remains with stricter conditions.
  • The precaria (temporary residence certificate during processing) is now valid for 90 days instead of 180; it is renewed online, starting 10 days before expiry.
  • From 12 August 2026 foreigners without permanent residence pay for planned care in national hospitals or show health insurance; emergency care is free for all.
