Monotributo in Argentina: a complete 2025 guide to registration and its benefits for freelancers and entrepreneurs

6 min read ·

What is Monotributo in Argentina?

Monotributo is Argentina's simplified tax regime, designed for freelancers, the self-employed and small business owners. It rolls several taxes and social contributions - income tax, VAT, pension contributions and health insurance (Obra Social) - into a single monthly payment. The result is a far simpler and more transparent way for small businesses to stay tax-compliant.

Why register for Monotributo?

Signing up for Monotributo brings several advantages:

  • Legal income: your activity is formally recognised and you can issue invoices.
  • Health insurance (Obra Social): access to the healthcare system for you and your family.
  • Pension contributions: participation in the state pension system.
  • A formal footing for your business or services: the ability to sign contracts and bid for tenders.
  • Proof of income: essential for obtaining residency, opening bank accounts and applying for loans.

Who can become a Monotributista?

You can register for Monotributo if you are:

  • an individual providing services or selling goods;
  • a member of a workers' cooperative;
  • an heir continuing the activity of a deceased Monotributista.

You cannot register for Monotributo if you are:

  • a member of a legal entity (such as an SA or SRL);
  • engaged in more than three lines of activity or operating more than three points of sale;
  • selling goods above a set price per unit (for example, ARS 85,627.66);
  • someone who has imported goods for resale in the past 12 months.

Monotributo categories

Monotributo is split into categories from "A" to "K", based on annual income, the floor space you use and how much electricity you consume. Each category sets the size of your monthly payment. In 2025, for example, the minimum payment is around USD 30 a month, while the maximum annual income allowed under the regime is roughly USD 76,523.

How to register for Monotributo

Registering for Monotributo involves the following steps:

  • Obtain a CUIT and a Clave Fiscal. The CUIT is your tax identification number, and the Clave Fiscal is the electronic key that gives you access to the online services of the ARCA tax authority (called AFIP until October 2024).
  • Register with ARCA: visit the ARCA website and follow the registration instructions.
  • Choose a category and health insurance: work out your category based on your income and select a suitable Obra Social.
  • Pay your monthly contribution: payment is due by the 20th of each month through online services such as PagoMisCuentas or Mercado Pago.

What to do if your income or activity changes

If your income or the nature of your activity changes, you need to:

  • re-categorise: update your category within the Monotributo system;
  • deregister from Monotributo: if you stop trading, you can cancel your registration online through the ARCA website.

The benefits of Monotributo

  • Simplicity: a single fixed payment instead of several separate taxes and contributions.
  • Health insurance: access to Obra Social for you and your family.
  • Pension contributions: participation in the state pension system.
  • An on-time payment bonus: pay reliably throughout the year and you may be reimbursed one monthly payment.

2026 update: monotributo categories and payments

Argentina's tax agency, now called ARCA instead of AFIP, has applied these thresholds since 1 August 2026. The monthly payment includes the tax, the pension contribution and health insurance. Dollar amounts use the Central Bank of Argentina's official rate of ARS 1,520 per $1 on 5 October 2026, rounded up.

CategoryAnnual income up toMonthly payment for services
AARS 12.0 million, ~$8,000~$40
BARS 17.6 million, ~$11,600~$40
CARS 24.7 million, ~$16,300~$50
DARS 30.6 million, ~$20,200~$60

JARS 105.0 million, ~$69,100~$770

For selling goods the monthly payment in higher categories is lower: in category K, for example, about $470 instead of $1,100.

How monotributo works in 2026

  • Registration is online with ARCA, in one day if you already have a tax number and a tax portal password.
  • The payment is due every month by the 20th.
  • The category is reviewed twice a year, in January and July, based on income for the last 12 months.
  • Health cover under monotributo starts about 3 months after the first payment.
  • If income for 12 months exceeds the category K limit, you move to the general regime with 21% VAT and income tax.

A foreigner needs a tax number and a resident identity card for monotributo. The order of getting documents is in our article on documents for living in Argentina in 2026.

Example calculation for a freelancer

A specialist earns $1,500 a month from a foreign client. At ARS 1,520 per dollar that is about ARS 2.28 million a month and about ARS 27.4 million a year, so they fall into category D with a limit of ARS 30.6 million. The monthly payment for services in this category is ARS 84,613, about $60, and it already includes the tax, pension contribution and health insurance.

Monotributo obligations

  • Issuing an electronic invoice for every payment, including from foreign clients.
  • Watching income for the last 12 months: crossing a limit changes the category at the next review.
  • Keeping business receipts in a separate account: on business accounts the bank withholds 0.6% on inflows and outflows.
