In detail

An international card-to-card transfer sends money from a card in one country to a card in another by the recipient's card number or phone number, in a few minutes, to the countries your bank has connected. Where the banks have no direct channel, the money reaches the same card by bank transfer to the card's account in 1-5 business days.

Below are the channels that work in October 2026, how a card transfer compares with a bank transfer, what sets the amount, the fastest destinations and what sending countries ask for. Amounts are in US dollars.

What is an international card-to-card transfer?

An international card-to-card transfer is a transfer from a card issued by a bank in one country to a card issued by a bank in another, by the recipient's card number or the phone number linked to it. The sender makes it in their bank's app: the money is debited from the sender's account and credited to the account behind the recipient's card.

Between banks in different countries the transfer goes through a card network or a transfer service that both banks work with. That is why every bank has its own set of countries: the destinations are listed in the app, in the section for transfers abroad.

For the recipient, a card is simply access to their account. If the two banks have no direct channel, the money comes to the same card by bank transfer, using the number of the account the card is issued on and the bank's code.

Which channels work for sending money to a card abroad in 2026?

You send money to a foreign card from any card or account at your bank, as long as the bank has connected the destination country: the list of destinations in the app decides, not the network of the sender's card. In 2026 there are 4 channels.

  • By phone number. The money goes to the card linked to the recipient's number through the bank's transfer service. Within a region, this is the quickest way to send to family.
  • By card number. You need the 16 digits of the card and the recipient's name exactly as the bank holds it, and the money arrives in the card's currency.
  • To the card through its account. A bank transfer to the number of the account the card is issued on, in dollars, euros, yuan or local currency. This way money reaches a card in Turkey, Europe, Asia or any other country.
  • Through a money transfer system. The sender gives the recipient's name and phone number, and the system credits the money to the recipient's card. The channel suits small amounts to Central Asia and the Caucasus.

The card you send from is just the source of the money, and for spending in the destination country the recipient uses the card of a local bank that the transfer arrives on. Every route, including a bank in a third country, is covered in how to send money abroad.

How does a card-to-card transfer differ from a bank transfer?

A card-to-card transfer is faster and simpler for small amounts, while a bank transfer by account details suits any amount and leaves a record with the purpose of the payment.

A large amount is safer sent by account details: it keeps a purpose and a statement that the bank, the notary and the immigration office of your new country will later accept. Preparing such a payment is covered in sending large sums abroad.

How much can you send to a card abroad in 2026?

The amount of a card transfer abroad is set by your bank: it has its own limits per transaction, per day and per month, and they are shown in the app, in the tariffs for transfers abroad. A larger amount goes from your account by account details in one payment.

The rule is the same for a card transfer and a bank transfer: the larger the amount, the more detailed the questions about its source. For a transfer from $10,000, prepare a document showing where the money came from, such as a statement, proof of income or a sale contract.

Bank limits and the cost of a transfer are covered in how much money can you send abroad.

Where does a transfer to a card work fastest?

A transfer to a card in October 2026 goes fastest to the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union, the Caucasus and Central Asia, while to Turkey the money goes to the card through its account. In each of these countries a large amount is credited to the recipient's account, and the local bank asks where the money came from.

To Turkey the money goes to the card through its account: the recipient gives the 26-character number, and a transfer in dollars, euros or lira arrives in 1-5 business days. A Turkish bank credits foreign currency as it is, and the recipient spends it by card straight away.

Within the Eurasian Economic Union, large amounts to Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan travel through direct ties between the member countries' banks, and the recipient converts them into local currency in the app when needed.

What do sending countries ask for in 2026?

Each country sets its own rules for money leaving it, and in 2026 the main sending countries in the region keep transfers by card and by account details open for private individuals.

  • Russia. Since 8 December 2025 the Bank of Russia has set no monthly thresholds on transfers abroad for its citizens and for foreigners from friendly countries. Before that date the caps were $1 million a month to accounts at foreign banks and $10,000 a month through money transfer systems, and now the amount is decided by the bank's check, with a document on the source of money from $10,000.
  • Kazakhstan. Without your own account, through a money transfer system, you send up to $10,000 at a time under the currency operations rules approved by the National Bank of Kazakhstan on 30 March 2019 (No. 40). From your own account at a Kazakh bank the amount is open.
  • Uzbekistan. Card-to-card transfers arrive within minutes with only the recipient's card number. Under presidential decree No. UP-5177 of 2 September 2017, individuals freely buy and sell currency at banks and use it as they choose.
  • Turkey. Money goes by bank transfer to an account or card abroad in dollars, euros, lira or other currencies. From 7 October 2026, under presidential decision No. 11845, the bank confirms the client's identity for an electronic transfer from $610 (30,000 lira), and buying foreign currency for lira carries a 0.2% tax under decision No. 3031 of September 2020.
  • Armenia. Money goes by bank transfer to an account or card abroad, and some Armenian banks also send by card number within minutes. Since 12 August 2026, under Central Bank of Armenia Board decision No. 21-N, an Armenian bank asks the sender for citizenship, residential address and country of tax residence.
  • Georgia. Money goes abroad by bank transfer in lari, dollars or other currencies, so a transfer starts with the question of which foreign banks the Georgian bank works with.

The rules of the recipient's country come on top: a large amount is credited to an account, and the receiving bank checks the source of the money. A currency resident's obligations, such as reporting foreign accounts, follow the law of their own country.

When is a financial intermediary more convenient?

A financial intermediary is more convenient when the amount is above the card's limit, the recipient's country is missing from your bank's app or the recipient's bank expects documents on the source of the money.

  • A large amount. Money from a home sale, savings or payment for housing abroad goes in one payment with documents, not in parts across cards.
  • A destination your bank lacks. Your bank does not work with the recipient's country or bank, and the route needs another bank.
  • Currency and rate. The recipient needs dollars or euros while the card takes only local currency, and it matters to avoid a double conversion.
  • A contract deadline. Tuition, medical care or rent must arrive by a date, without a delay at the bank's check.
  • Between two foreign accounts. The money moves from a third country or between two accounts abroad.
