Details for a transfer to Trinidad: the account number, the bank code and a bank in the US

Trinidad and Tobago has no international account number like the one in Europe. The sender needs the recipient's account number, their name as in their ID and the bank's code for international transfers. For a transfer in US dollars the recipient's bank also names its correspondent bank in the US: the dollars go through it, and this line is copied into the transfer from the bank's letter without changes.

Within the country money moves between banks through two central bank systems: the large-value payment system, running since 2004, and the automated clearing house for mass payments since 2006. Instant transfers by phone number, modelled on India's system, are in the central bank's roadmap for 2026-2030. Life in the capital is covered on the Port of Spain page.

Why it pays to keep a transfer in US dollars

The foreign exchange law no longer requires currency to be surrendered to the state: that duty was lifted in April 1993, and since then residents and companies have held savings accounts and deposits in US dollars at banks. Banks buy dollars for clients from the central bank, which sold them $1.2 billion in the year to July 2026, and on 4 July 2026 announced a new currency law to replace the old one.

So dollars from abroad are more conveniently kept in a dollar account: for paying for study, trips or purchases abroad you will not have to buy them again. Part of the sum in Trinidad dollars will cover local spending. Want to split a transfer by currency? A manager will suggest a scheme for your spending.

Tax on foreign income: what is taxed when money is sent

A resident of Trinidad and Tobago is someone who has spent 183 days in the country in a year. A resident who lives here permanently pays tax on worldwide income. A resident who does not live here permanently pays tax on foreign income only on the part brought into the country, so for them it matters what money arrives in a local account and when.

Money from relatives is a gift, and the country has no gift or inheritance tax. Interest on savings accounts and deposits in the country's banks is tax-free for individuals, so money in a local deposit grows without deductions.

A house by the sea: a plot of up to 1 acre without a licence

The Foreign Investment Act 1990 allows a foreigner to buy land for a home of up to 1 acre, which is 4,047 m², without a licence from the Minister of Finance; for business, up to 5 acres. After the deal the buyer and their lawyer notify the minister using the form in the schedule to the act. Citizens of Caribbean Community countries buy on the same terms as local residents.

When buying a home, stamp duty is paid on a scale by price. The rates for 2026:

Home priceStamp duty
Up to $130,000 (850,000 Trinidad dollars)0%
$130,000 - $190,0003%
$190,000 - $260,0005%
Over $260,000 (1,750,000 Trinidad dollars)7.5%

The duty is paid before the contract is registered, so the money for a home arrives in two parts: the price to the seller and the duty with the lawyer's costs. Chosen a home? A manager will work out both parts from the deal price.

A transfer from $10,000: what a bank in Port of Spain will ask

Banks in Trinidad and Tobago check clients under the Proceeds of Crime Act and the Financial Obligations Regulations 2010, updated in 2025; the central bank supervises the banks. In 2026 the questions depend on the sum:

SumThe bank's questionWhat to attach
Up to $10,000who pays and whythe payment purpose, the sender's name and address
$10,000 - $50,000where the money comes froma statement of the sender's account or an income certificate
Over $50,000the origin and purpose of the whole suma contract for the sale of a flat or a share, a tax return, a home purchase contract
