How to send money to Haiti in 2026: gourdes at the central bank rate, an e-wallet and a dollar account
In Haiti a transfer is received in gourdes, to an e-wallet or to a dollar account, and since January 2026 the central bank rate has held at 130-131 gourdes. We explain how circular 114-3 works, when a bank transfer is needed, how much the diaspora sends, what about tax and who can buy a house.
In short
- Pick-up points pay gourdes at no less than the reference rate - 130.51 on 8 October 2026.
- A dollar account keeps the dollars; from $1,000 to an account it goes by bank transfer.
- In January-August 2026 $3.48 billion arrived, 80% of it from the USA.
- A foreigner living in Haiti buys one house per district.
In detail
Yes, in 2026 money is received in Haiti in three ways: in gourdes at a transfer pick-up point, to an e-wallet by phone number, or by bank transfer to a dollar account. Pick-up points pay gourdes at a rate no lower than the central bank's reference rate, which on 8 October 2026 was 130.51 gourdes per dollar, and a sum of $1,000 or more is credited to an account by bank transfer.
| Route | Status on 8 October 2026 | Currency for the recipient | When the money arrives | What the sender should know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Money transfer pick-up point | works | gourdes at no less than the reference rate | on the day of sending | the recipient's name as in their ID, the transfer number |
| Mobile operator e-wallet | works | gourdes | on the day of sending | the phone number the wallet is linked to |
| Bank transfer to a dollar account | works | US dollars, no exchange | 2-5 business days | account number, bank code, correspondent bank in the USA |
| Bank transfer to a gourde account | works | gourdes at the bank's rate | 2-5 business days | account number and bank code |
Checked on 8 October 2026. The Bank of the Republic of Haiti reference rate on 8 October 2026 is 130.5102 gourdes per dollar; since January 2026 the rate has stayed within 130-131 gourdes.
Gourdes or dollars: what circular 114-3 requires
How transfers are paid out is set by central bank circular 114-3, in force since 5 September 2022; in May 2024 the central bank reminded banks and transfer companies that it is binding on their agents too. A pick-up point pays a transfer in gourdes at a rate no lower than the reference rate and no higher than the midpoint between the reference rate and the banks' average buying rate: on 8 October 2026 that was 130.51 to 130.94 gourdes per dollar. The rate is posted at the point, and the receipt shows the amount, currency and rate.

For the money to stay in dollars, it is credited to a US dollar savings account. Up to $999 the transfer company does this, and a sum of $1,000 or more is sent by the sender from their bank to the recipient's bank. A dollar account is common in Haiti: on 31 March 2026, 64.46% of all deposits at the country's banks were in foreign currency. Want to keep your dollars? A manager will choose a route for your amount.
An e-wallet: a transfer by phone number
The wallets of the two largest mobile operators work under central bank circular 121 on electronic payment providers, adopted in December 2021: the provider holds a central bank licence, client money is kept separate from its own, and the wallet holder is checked on opening. A transfer from abroad is credited straight to the wallet in gourdes, and the recipient pays with them by phone.
Between banks inside the country money goes through the central bank's interbank payment system: a transfer from one account to another at a different bank goes through during working hours with no wait for clearing. In October 2025 the central bank named digitising payments its main task.
Almost a fifth of the economy: money from the diaspora
According to the central bank's table, in 2025 over $4.5 billion reached Haiti through money transfer companies, and in January-August 2026 $3.48 billion, 17% more than a year earlier. 80% of the money is sent from the USA, 5% each from Canada and France, and 2% from Chile. According to the World Bank, in 2024 remittances made up 16.9% of the country's economy.
A transfer from the USA is cheaper sent from your own bank account or with a US card: since 1 January 2026 such payments are exempt from the 1% levy under section 4475 of the US tax code. Life in the capital is described on the Port-au-Prince page.
Tax on money from abroad: what is taxed for the recipient
The 2005 income tax decree taxes worldwide income for those whose tax home is in Haiti, and for those living abroad only income from Haitian sources. Money from a relative does not count as the recipient's income, and the country has no inheritance tax. A Haitian resident's salary from abroad is part of their taxable income.
A house in Haiti: the right of ownership for residents
Haiti's 1987 Constitution (articles 55 to 55-4) gives a foreigner who lives in the country the right to buy a home to live in: one house in each district of the country. The right remains for 5 years after moving out of Haiti. The deal is drawn up by a notary, and the contract is registered by the Haitian tax service.

The money for buying a house arrives by bank transfer to the buyer's dollar account: that way the deal amount does not depend on the gourde rate on the day of payment. Planning to buy a house? A manager will go through the deal and advise which currency to pay in.
A large transfer to Haiti: what to attach for the bank
Haitian banks check clients under the 2013 anti-money laundering law and central bank rules. For a transfer in 2026 the ladder is as follows:
| Amount | How to send | What they will ask |
|---|---|---|
| Up to $999 | a pick-up point, a wallet or an account through a transfer company | the recipient's name and ID |
| $1,000 - $10,000 | a bank transfer to an account | the purpose of the transfer and the link to the recipient |
| From $10,000 | a bank transfer with documents | where the money comes from: a statement, a sale contract, a tax return |
Sending more than $10,000? Source-of-funds documents are best attached at once: the recipient's bank will then credit the sum with no extra questions. Countries for moving with capital are compared on the capital relocation page.
