What the city lives on and who it suits
Quito is the capital of Ecuador at about 2,850 metres in the Andes, stretching for dozens of kilometres along a valley, with about 2.8 million people. Its historic centre was one of the first World Heritage sites. The country's economy rests on oil, bananas, shrimp, flowers and tourism, and payments are in US dollars.
Quito suits remote workers on the digital nomad visa, retirees, families wanting an affordable life in year-round spring weather and those seeking citizenship within a few years. It is harder for people who cope badly with altitude and those not ready to learn Spanish.
Neighbourhoods: where newcomers settle
- González Suárez: high-rises over the valley with views, popular with foreigners.
- La Carolina and Bellavista: the business north, La Carolina park, malls.
- La Floresta: a bohemian area with cafés and a cinema.
- Cumbayá and Tumbaco: the valley below the city, warmer, houses with gardens, the family choice.
- The historic centre: beautiful, but empty in the evening.
Cost of living
| Item, per month | US dollars |
|---|---|
| Furnished one-bedroom flat in expat areas | 450-900 |
| Such a flat in González Suárez | 600-900 |
| Metro ride | 0.45 |
| One person's costs without rent | about 550 |
The currency is the US dollar, so there is no currency risk for dollar earners.
Renting and buying a home
Flats in districts where foreigners live are usually let furnished, leases run for a year, and the landlord asks for a deposit. For the first weeks a flat paid by the month is more convenient: look at districts by day and by night and only then sign a long lease. Pay attention to building security: good residential complexes have it around the clock.
Buying in Quito is inexpensive by the standards of the region's capitals: about $1,300 per m² on average, and about $1,800 in Cumbayá, the most expensive district. Foreigners buy on the same terms as citizens, and buying property above a set threshold gives investor residence. Payments are in dollars, so there is no currency risk. Practicalities: altitude, climate, transport
Altitude. In the first days at 2,850 metres breathlessness and headaches are common, so increase exertion gradually. Climate. Spring all year: 18-22°C by day, cool nights, more rain from October to May. Transport. The metro opened in late 2023, a ride costs $0.45, and there are buses and app taxis. The airport is about 40 km away, a 45-60 minute drive.
Climate by season
Quito lies almost on the equator, so there are no seasons in the usual sense: the temperature is the same all year, and only the rainfall changes.
| Season | Weather | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Dry season, June-September | +20-24°C by day, sunny and windy | the sun at altitude is very strong, so sunscreen and a hat are a must |
| Rainy season, October-May | +18-22°C by day, showers mostly in the afternoon | an umbrella every day; nights around +10°C, and homes usually have no heating |
Taxes
- residents pay tax on worldwide income on a 0-37% scale, with a tax-free threshold of $12,208 a year;
- corporate tax is 25% and VAT 15%;
- money transfers abroad are taxed at 5%.
More on the Taxes in Ecuador page.
Moving and legal status
- citizens of most countries need no visa for up to 90 days a year, extendable by another 90;
- the digital nomad visa: income from $1,446 a month from abroad, for up to 2 years;
- there are visas for retirees and investors, and parents of a child born in Ecuador get permanent residence at once;
- citizenship no earlier than 3 years after permanent residence, with dual citizenship allowed.

Safety
Since 2023-2024 drug-related crime has risen in Ecuador, hitting Guayaquil and the coastal provinces hardest. Quito is calmer, but pickpocketing and street robbery happen, so in the evening people use app taxis and keep valuables out of sight.
Trips from Quito
From Quito people go to Cotopaxi volcano, the Otavalo market, the Mindo cloud forest and the equator at the Middle of the World monument. Domestic flights go to the Galápagos, where an additional national park entry fee applies. The road to the Amazon rainforest takes a few hours.

Is the city worth considering
The pluses are the dollar as currency, spring weather, affordable living, easy visa-free entry and citizenship 3 years after permanent residence. The minuses are altitude, rising crime in the country and essential Spanish. Quito works for remote workers and families ready to adapt.
