Moving to the USA: real options for Russians
Despite the rumors about restrictions, Russian citizens still have lawful routes to the USA - including the O-1 talent visa.
Moving is possible
Moving to the USA is not an impossible mission for Russian citizens. Despite certain restrictions and formalities, there are real and lawful ways to do it.
Which visas are available
The USA accepts people from all over the world, including citizens of countries considered politically unfriendly: the constitution guarantees equal rights and opportunities regardless of citizenship.
There are plenty of visas to move on - study, medical and others. The O-1 talent visa is especially popular: it suits anyone with recognition in their field, from graphic design to video blogging, and has no rigid formal barriers. The only extra requirement for citizens of sanctioned countries is to confirm that their place of residence is outside such a country. The other criteria create no additional difficulties for Russian citizens.
Why the USA is open to immigrants
For decades the USA has been actively accepting skilled immigrants - this is already the third wave of immigration reform, which began in the 1990s. The policy pays off for the country: it attracts talented people who drive the economy and culture forward.
Murblz specializes in relocation to the USA and will help you work out which visa fits you.
What changed in 2026
US visas are issued to Russian citizens, but the process is harder than a few years ago. The embassy in Moscow processes almost no visas, so Russians book visitor, work and student visa interviews in Astana or Warsaw. You can also apply in a country where you lawfully reside, which you must prove with documents.
Immigrant visas, the consular route to a green card, are handled for residents of Russia by the embassy in Warsaw. From 21 January 2026 the State Department paused issuing them to nationals of 75 countries, including Russia. On 21 August 2026 a federal court in New York struck the pause down and ordered refusals to be reconsidered. The government may appeal, so we check the current position before filing.
Which routes actually work in 2026
| Route | Who it suits | Main condition |
|---|---|---|
| O-1 talent visa | professionals with recognition in their field | 3 of 8 criteria, a petition from a US employer or agent, a visa for up to 3 years |
| EB-1 talent green card | people with extraordinary achievements | 3 of 10 criteria, no employer needed |
| National interest green card | specialists with a master's degree or exceptional ability | work important to the USA, no employer needed |
| EB-5 investment green card | investors | from $800,000 in a targeted area, 10 jobs |
| Start-up founder parole | founders with US investors | from $311,071 from US investors, up to 5 years without a green card |
| H-1B work visa | specialists with a job offer | a lottery and, since 21 September 2025, a $100,000 fee for new workers from abroad |
| Study | students | admission to a university and funds for tuition and living |
There is no E-2 treaty investor visa for Russian citizens: the two countries have no qualifying treaty. With a second citizenship of a treaty country, the route opens through it.
The O-1 talent visa: what is really checked
The O-1 does not require a degree, but a portfolio alone is not enough. You must prove at least 3 of 8 signs of recognition: awards, membership in selective professional associations, published material about you, judging others' work, a notable contribution to the field, authored articles, a critical role in distinguished companies, and pay well above peers. Artists and film people have their own 6 criteria. The petition is filed by an employer, an agent or your own US company, and the visa is issued for up to 3 years with extensions.
The route suits designers, developers, entrepreneurs, athletes and authors with external proof of their level. We assess the evidence first and then decide whether to file for the talent visa or go straight for a green card.
Steps and timing
- Profile review and route choice: 1-2 weeks.
- Collecting evidence and expert letters: 1 to 3 months.
- The petition to US immigration services: with premium processing a reply in 15 business days for the talent visa and talent green card and 45 business days for national interest, months without it.
- Booking and attending the interview in Astana or Warsaw.
- Administrative processing if assigned, and visa issuance.
- Entry to the USA. On an immigrant visa the green card is mailed after entry.
Costs item by item
- talent visa petition: $1,055 plus a $600 asylum program fee, less for companies with up to 25 employees;
- immigrant petition for a talent or national interest green card: $715 on paper or $665 online plus the asylum program fee;
- premium processing: $2,965 from 1 March 2026;
- consular fee for a work visa: $205, for a visitor visa $185; a 2025 law adds a $250 fee on visa issuance;
- immigrant visa: a $345 consular fee and $235 to immigration services for the card;
- a medical exam by an embassy panel physician, translations, a police certificate, flights and accommodation in Astana or Warsaw for the interview.
Government fees for the talent visa for one person with premium processing start from $4,900. Our support fee is quoted by a manager in the chat.
Documents and where to get them
- a passport valid for the whole trip;
- the visa application form and the embassy appointment confirmation;
- evidence of recognition: publications, awards, expert letters, contracts and payment records, collected for specific criteria;
- diplomas with a US equivalency evaluation;
- for an immigrant visa: a Russian police certificate ordered through the state services portal or a service centre, birth and marriage certificates with English translations, and a medical exam by an embassy panel physician.
How to get approved without delays
- for a visitor visa, the consul saw no strong ties to home and suspected an intent to stay;
- for the talent visa and green cards, the evidence does not meet the criteria: articles that do not mention the applicant, awards without selection, letters without specifics;
- a request for evidence answered off the point;
- administrative processing after the interview can take several months;
- misrepresentation in the form: it leads to a permanent entry ban.
Family: what the spouse and children get
- On the O-1 talent visa the spouse and children under 21 get O-3 visas: they can study but not work.
- With a talent, national interest or investment green card, the spouse and children under 21 get green cards together with the principal applicant, and the spouse can work without restrictions.
- On a student visa the family can come, but the spouse cannot work.
If the spouse needs to work, it is better to go straight for a green card rather than a work visa.
Taxes after the move
You become a US tax resident with a green card or by days in the country: the formula counts 183 days including the two previous years. A resident pays tax on worldwide income: federal rates from 10% to 37%, plus state tax, which Florida and Texas do not have and which tops out at 13.3% in California. Foreign accounts that together exceeded $10,000 during the year must be reported every year. Assets in Russia and the income from them are best sorted out before the move.
Comparison with other countries for professionals
| Country | Route | Main condition |
|---|---|---|
| USA | talent visa or a green card without an employer | proven recognition or work in the national interest |
| United Kingdom | Global Talent visa | endorsement by a sector body, a visa for up to 5 years |
| France | talent passport | a contract from €39,582 gross a year or your own project, a card for up to 4 years |
| Canada | Global Talent Stream | a job offer, salary from 80,000 Canadian dollars in category A |
The USA offers the largest market and a green card without an employer, but you must prove more and wait longer. Europe and Canada are faster with a contract.
We will choose a US route for your profile and tell you honestly whether the evidence is strong enough.
