Surprising facts about the United Kingdom you probably didn't know

6 min read ·

The United Kingdom is a country of rich history and singular traditions that draws millions of visitors from around the world. Yet even behind its famous landmarks lie little-known facts worth sharing.

  1. London was the first city in the world to open an underground railway.
  2. The world's first postage stamp was invented in Britain. Issued in 1840, it bore the portrait of Queen Victoria.
  3. British author J.K. Rowling became the first billionaire novelist.
  4. The University of Oxford is the oldest institution of learning in Britain. Until 1877, its lecturers were forbidden to marry.
  5. Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, a village in Wales, has the longest place name in the country - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch - and has become a tourist attraction in its own right.
  6. Becoming a licensed taxi driver in London is no easy feat: it requires passing a fiendish test of navigating the city entirely from memory, without any satnav.
  7. Margaret Thatcher was the first woman to lead the British government - and she held the office longer than any other prime minister of the 20th century.
  8. French was an official language of Britain from 1066 to 1362 - nearly 300 years.
  9. Killing swans is prohibited by law in Britain. The penalty can reach a £5,000 fine or six months in prison.
  10. Stonehenge is older than the Egyptian pyramids. It was built more than 3,000 years BC, whereas the Great Pyramid of Giza dates to around 2,500 years BC.

Are you a leader in your field?

The UK Global Talent Visa is a special category designed for individuals who have achieved outstanding results in science, digital technology, the arts, or culture and wish to relocate to the United Kingdom to work in their field.

To demonstrate your talent, you'll need a portfolio of achievements. That might mean research grants for academics, publications or exhibitions for those in the arts, or a role as founder or key employee at a technology company. Both EU nationals and citizens of third countries can apply. Neither English-language proficiency nor proof of income is required. If you don't yet have an established public profile, additional PR work with specialists who help build your case may be needed. The Talent Visa leads to indefinite leave to remain (ILR), and a year after that you can apply for British citizenship.

The Global Talent visa in 2026

  • Fields - science and research, digital technology, arts and culture. Endorsement comes from a designated body, after which the Home Office issues the visa.
  • Levels - exceptional talent for recognised leaders, or exceptional promise, usually in the first 5-7 years of a career.
  • Fees - endorsement application £561, about $750, visa after endorsement £205, about $280. Health surcharge £1,035 a year per adult and £776 per child.
  • Timeline - endorsement takes 2 to 8 weeks depending on the field, and you must apply for the visa within 3 months of it.
  • Rights - work for any employer, run your own business, family with the right to work and study, a visa term of 1 to 5 years.
  • Settlement - after 3 or 5 years depending on field and level, if you spent no more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12 months.

Other routes to the UK

  • Innovator Founder visa - no minimum investment, the business is endorsed by an approved body; more in UK residence for entrepreneurs.
  • Skilled work - with a salary from £41,700 a year and a degree-level job.
  • Study - a Student visa, then the Graduate visa.
  • Marriage - a spouse visa with income from £29,000 a year.

Life in the UK: what to know

  • Healthcare. The immigration health surcharge gives access to the NHS on the same terms as residents; private insurance shortens waits.
  • Schools. State schools are free for visa holders' children; private schools cost tens of thousands of pounds a year.
  • Housing. Rent is the main cost, especially in London, plus council tax.
  • Banking. Accounts open faster once you have a visa and a UK address.
  • Taxes. Income tax is 20%, 40% and 45%, up to 48% in Scotland. New residents who have not been UK tax resident for 10 years pay no tax on foreign income for the first 4 years; more in UK taxes.

Path to citizenship

After indefinite leave to remain you need another 12 months in the country, at least 5 years in total, the Life in the UK test and English. Dual citizenship is allowed. The government is preparing a reform that may raise the baseline period to settlement to 10 years, so applications follow the rules on the date of filing. More in British citizenship.

Practical facts for moving

  • The UK has about 69 million people, more than 9 million of them in London.
  • The country left the EU on 31 January 2020 and is not in the Schengen area: it needs a separate visa, and with UK status you travel to Europe under the rules for your own citizenship.
  • Visitors from visa-free countries have needed an electronic travel authorisation for £16 since 2025. It is not available to Russian citizens, who need a regular visa.
  • Traffic drives on the left, and sockets are the three-pin British type.
  • The school year starts in September, and places at good state schools are allocated by address, so housing is chosen with schools in mind.

Where was the first postage stamp made?
Britain issued the world's first postage stamp in 1840, carrying a profile of Queen Victoria. Prepaid postage caught on quickly and spread worldwide. British stamps remain the only ones that do not print a country name.
