Company formation on Norfolk Island
What changed after the island moved to Australian law, and how to set up a company here today.
Norfolk Island is an external territory of Australia in the Pacific, with about 2,200 residents. For a long time it had its own laws and tax advantages, but since 1 July 2016 Australian taxes and superannuation have applied on the island, and on 2 August 2021 all Norfolk Island companies were re-registered with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and given an Australian company number. So a Norfolk Island company today is an Australian company with a registered office on the island, under Australian requirements and taxes. US dollar amounts use the European Central Bank rate of 5 October 2026, about 1.44 Australian dollars per US dollar.
How much does company registration cost: government fees
| Payment | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Proprietary company registration | AUD 636, ~$445 | From 1 July 2026, via the Australian commission |
| Annual review fee | commission's scale | Every year on the registration date |
| Director identification number | no fee | Mandatory for every director |
Since 2016 Norfolk has Australian taxes, and registration costs about $445
The law does not stop you from registering a Norfolk Island company on your own. But mistakes cost more than the fee: counting on the island's former tax breaks abolished in 2016, a director without a director identification number, a missed annual review fee, an address that cannot be used for registration. Murblz specialists check whether the structure works under Australian taxes, obtain the director ID, register the company with the Australian commission and maintain its obligations.
The cost of support depends on the company type, ownership structure and whether you need an account; a manager will calculate it in the chat.
Company requirements
- A resident director. At least one director of a proprietary company must ordinarily reside in Australia, including Norfolk Island.
- Director ID. Each director obtains a director identification number before appointment.
- Shareholders of any nationality, including companies.
- A registered office in Australia, on the island for a Norfolk company.
- Tax registration: an Australian business number and the company's tax file number.
Taxes since 2016
- Corporate tax under Australian rules: 30%, or 25% for smaller companies with turnover under AUD 50 million whose passive income does not exceed 80%.
- Income tax and superannuation have applied to island residents since 1 July 2016.
- Australian GST does not apply on the island.
- Norfolk's former tax advantages are gone, so registering here for tax reasons no longer makes sense.
How registration works
- Director IDs for every director.
- Name check and a constitution or the standard replaceable rules.
- Application to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and fee payment.
- Certificate of registration and Australian company number.
- Tax registration and a bank account.
Why problems arise
- No director living in Australia: registration is refused.
- A director without an identification number: penalties for the director.
- Expecting old tax advantages that no longer exist.
- The bank will not open an account without clear activity on the island or in Australia.
- The company is actually run from another country: a risk of tax residency there.
