Residence permit in Indonesia
Three legal routes to long-term life in Indonesia: a stake in your own foreign-owned company, a deposit in a state bank under the second home visa, or large investment under the golden visa.

Three main routes let a foreigner live in Indonesia long-term: an investor permit through your own foreign-owned company, a second home visa with a deposit in a state bank, and a golden visa for large investors. The investor permit requires a company with at least two shareholders, a director and a commissioner, and the applicant's own stake must be at least IDR 10 billion.
Three routes to Indonesian residence
| Route | Main condition | Term |
|---|---|---|
| Investor permit | your own foreign-owned company and a stake from IDR 10 billion, ~$558,240 | 2 years, renewable |
| Second home visa | an IDR 2 billion deposit in a state bank, ~$111,700, or property from $1 million | 5 or 10 years |
| Golden visa | a company with investment from $2.5 million or from $5 million | 5 or 10 years |
Rupiah are converted at the European Central Bank rate of 5 October 2026 and rounded up.
A foreign-owned company
Since 2025 the minimum paid-up capital of a foreign-owned company has been cut from IDR 10 billion to IDR 2.5 billion, about $139,560. But for the investor permit, the 2024 immigration rules require a stake of at least IDR 10 billion in the applicant's own name. The company needs at least two shareholders, plus a director and a commissioner; these roles can be shared with a partner. Registration takes about two weeks, and a one-year virtual registered address is enough to start.
We will work out online the investment or income your family needs and what the permit costs for each member.
The second home visa
The second home visa gives residence for 5 or 10 years without a sponsor or age requirement. The main condition is an IDR 2 billion deposit in an Indonesian state bank for the whole term or property worth at least $1 million. You cannot work on this visa; it is meant for living in the country. For families who want to live long-term in Bali or Jakarta without a business, it is usually the simplest route. The deposit stays yours, but it cannot be withdrawn before the visa ends, so this money is best treated as a long-term family reserve.
The golden visa
The golden visa is for large investors: an individual setting up a company in Indonesia invests from $2.5 million for a 5-year visa or from $5 million for a 10-year visa. There are also options for executives of companies investing in the country. This route suits those genuinely building a large business in Indonesia and gives the longest term without annual renewals.

Documents
- A passport with ample validity, covering the whole term for longer permits, and photos.
- For the investor permit, company documents, an extract showing the stake in your name and tax numbers.
- For the second home visa, proof of the state bank deposit or property documents.
- Health insurance for the whole permit term.
- For family, marriage and children's birth certificates.
Timelines
Company registration takes about two weeks, and the investor permit then takes roughly another two, so the whole path takes about a month if all goes smoothly. The second home visa is processed after the deposit is opened, with timing depending on the bank and immigration. Investor permit renewals are filed before expiry, with proof that the company operates and pays taxes. We remind you of renewal dates in advance so there is no gap in status.
How to get approved the first time
- The applicant's stake is below IDR 10 billion, even though the company's capital is formally sufficient.
- The company has no activity, files no accounts and pays no taxes.
- The deposit was opened with a non-state bank or withdrawn early.
- The passport expires earlier than the chosen permit term requires.
- Company documents and forms contain contradictions.
- The business activity is closed to foreign capital or needs a separate licence.
Taxes
Anyone living in Indonesia for more than 183 days in 12 months becomes tax resident; income tax ranges from 5% to 35% on a scale. Foreigners with certain professional skills may pay tax only on Indonesian income for the first 4 years, and we check separately whether this applies. Companies pay 22% corporate tax, with simplified regimes for small businesses. Dividends the company pays to shareholders are taxed separately, so we design owner payouts together with an accountant before the first year of operation.
What changes in 2026
The cut in minimum paid-up capital to IDR 2.5 billion made setting up companies easier, but the stake threshold for the investor permit remains IDR 10 billion. The second home visa and the golden visa continue on the same terms. Rupiah thresholds do not move with the exchange rate, so in dollars they fluctuate.
Which route suits whom
The investor permit is chosen by those building a real business in Indonesia and ready to hold a stake of IDR 10 billion or more. The second home visa suits families and people on passive income who want to live in Bali or Jakarta for 5-10 years without a business. The golden visa is for large investors. If you are not yet sure you will stay, it makes sense to start with the one-year remote worker visa.
Work and running the company
The investor permit gives the right to live in the country and own a stake in your company. If you will work in it as a salaried director, you will generally need a work permit for foreigners, so we plan company roles in advance. The second home visa does not allow work at all.
Company reporting
A foreign-owned company files a quarterly investment activity report with the Ministry of Investment, as well as tax returns. Missed filings lead to sanctions and hinder renewal of the investor permit, so we keep accounting in Indonesia from the first month.
Property
Foreigners cannot own land in Indonesia freehold. Long-term leases, a right of use for housing for foreigners with a stay permit, or ownership through a foreign-owned company are commonly used. For the second home visa, property worth at least $1 million can be shown instead of a deposit, but we check the form of ownership before purchase.
Family
A spouse and children generally receive stay permits as family members of the main applicant under the second home visa or the investor permit. Marriage and birth certificates are needed, and for children also school documents if they will study in Indonesia.
Where to start
Send us in the chat how much you are ready to invest or keep on deposit, whether you plan a business in Indonesia and your family composition. We compare the three routes, calculate the full budget and timeline and propose the order of steps, for example starting with the remote worker visa and moving to long-term status a year later.
Company registration: what matters
A foreign-owned company is set up before a notary, approved by the Ministry of Law and licensed in the single electronic licensing system. A code is chosen for each business activity, and some sectors are closed or restricted for foreign capital, so we check the activity before registration. Shareholders and the director need passports, tax numbers and documents on paying in capital.
Renewal and permanent status
The investor permit is renewed every 2 years provided the company operates, files reports and pays taxes, and the stake remains in your name. After several years of continuous residence on a temporary permit you can apply for a permanent stay permit. The second home visa is valid for 5 or 10 years and can also be renewed while the deposit is maintained.
Timing for a family with a business
If a family moves together with a business, it is convenient to register the company and obtain the investor permit for the main applicant first, and then arrange permits for family members. That way the stake and company documents are ready and the family's applications go through faster. The whole path takes about two months if all goes smoothly.
Bank and paying in capital
After registration the company opens an account with an Indonesian bank, and capital is paid in from abroad. The bank checks the origin of the money, so we accompany the transfer with contracts and statements explaining the source of funds. Proof of capital contribution is then needed both for the investor permit and for the company's annual reporting.
