Retiring in the Czech Republic in 2026: how to get residence
The Czech Republic has no retiree visa, and Russian citizens outside the country get visas and residence only by exception. A retiree is left with reunification with children after 65 and renewing an existing status, while pensions up to 806,400 crowns a year are tax-free.

The Czech Republic is popular with retirees from Russia: a large Russian-speaking community, good hospitals, calm towns and prices below Germany and Austria. But Czech law has no separate retiree visa, and since 2022 the country has not issued visas or residence permits to Russian citizens outside its territory, apart from a narrow list of exceptions.
For a retiree from Russia one exception matters: family reunification. A single parent over 65 can move to a child who lives in the Czech Republic with a residence permit. Below is who qualifies, which documents are needed, what insurance is required, how the pension is taxed and what a couple spends in Prague.
We will work out online the investment or income your family needs and what the permit costs for each member.
Who can get residence as a retiree
In 2026 a retiree has several options. Age and pension are not grounds on their own: you need a purpose of stay set by the Act on the Residence of Foreigners.
- a single parent over 65, or of any age if unable to look after themselves because of illness, joining a child who has lived in the Czech Republic for at least 15 months with long-term or permanent residence; for Russian citizens this is one of the exceptions;
- a parent of a Czech citizen who depends on the child, as a family member of an EU citizen;
- Russian citizens already living in the Czech Republic on a visa or residence permit renew it on the same ground;
- nationals of other countries, through the long-term visa for other purposes with funds, housing and insurance; it is granted at the consulate's discretion, and a pension alone may not be enough;
- buying a flat does not give residence.
Documents and how to prove a Russian pension
- a passport;
- the child's birth certificate with an apostille to prove the relationship;
- documents on the child's residence permit showing at least 15 months of residence in the Czech Republic;
- proof that the parent is alone, such as a spouse's death or divorce certificate, with no other close relatives in Russia able to care for them;
- proof of housing in the Czech Republic with enough floor space per occupant;
- proof of funds: a pension certificate from the Social Fund of Russia with an apostille and the child's income;
- comprehensive health insurance for the whole term;
- a police clearance certificate with an apostille, the form and photos.
Russian documents are translated into Czech by a court translator, otherwise they are not accepted. The application for long-term residence for family reunification is filed at a Czech embassy; for Russian citizens the embassy accepts only exceptions, and appointments can take a long time.
You can keep receiving the pension from the Social Fund of Russia, but Russian bank cards do not work in the Czech Republic and transfers to the EU are restricted. So part of the money is kept in a Czech account in advance if you or your child already have one.
Health insurance
A visa and residence permit require comprehensive private health insurance for the whole stay with the limits set by law. For people over 60-70 such policies are noticeably more expensive and some insurers ask for a medical check, so the policy is chosen in advance.
A retiree with long-term residence usually does not join the public health insurance system and is treated under the private policy. After obtaining permanent residence you can move to the public system on general terms.
Tax on your pension and the treaty with Russia
You become a Czech tax resident if you have a permanent home there or spend more than 183 days in the country in a calendar year. Regular pensions, including those from abroad, are exempt from income tax as long as their annual total does not exceed 36 minimum wages: 806,400 crowns in 2026, about $37,180. An ordinary Russian pension is far below this threshold and is not taxed in the Czech Republic; any part above the threshold is taxed at 15%.
Russia does not tax a state pension either. Russia suspended its treaty with the Czech Republic in August 2023, so there is no credit for dividends, interest and rent from Russia. More in our article on Russia's double tax treaties in 2026 and on our page on taxes in the Czech Republic.
Monthly budget for a couple
| Monthly item | Amount |
|---|---|
| One-bedroom flat in Prague outside the centre | 18,000-24,000 crowns |
| Utilities, higher in winter | 4,000-6,000 crowns |
| Internet and phones for two | 800-1,200 crowns |
| Groceries for two | 9,000-12,000 crowns |
| Prague public transport for people aged 65 and over | free |
| Total for a couple | from 31,800 crowns, ~$1,470 |
Rent in Brno, Ostrava, Plzeň and smaller towns is noticeably lower than in Prague, while Karlovy Vary is pricier because of the spa trade. Budget separately for insurance for two: its price depends on age. The rate is about 24.4 crowns to the euro and about 21.7 crowns to the dollar in 2026. Our consultant in the chat will work out a budget for your city and family.
Joining your children in the Czech Republic after 65
For Russian citizens family reunification is one of the few open grounds, and the consulate checks it strictly: age, living alone, how long the child has lived in the country, floor space and insurance. We check in advance whether your case qualifies, gather apostilled documents with court translations, find comprehensive insurance for your age and follow the application to the card and the first renewal.
Our consultant in the chat will calculate the cost of support.
Where retirees settle
Most retirees from Russia live in Prague: the best hospitals, Russian-speaking doctors, theatres and the airport. For a quieter life people choose green districts outside the centre, where rent is lower.
Brno, the second city, has university hospitals and prices below Prague's. Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně are chosen for their mineral springs and sanatoriums, and the small towns of South Bohemia for quiet and low prices.
Steps and timelines
| Step | Timeline |
|---|---|
| Checking the ground: age, living alone, the child's residence | 1-2 weeks |
| Certificates, apostilles, court translation, insurance, housing | 4-8 weeks |
| Filing at a Czech embassy | by appointment |
| Decision by the Ministry of the Interior | up to 270 days by law for family reunification |
| Entry visa, biometrics and card | after the decision |
| Renewal | before expiry; for 2 years if the child has permanent residence |
| Permanent residence | after 5 years of continuous residence |
Nationals of other countries can get the long-term visa for other purposes for up to 1 year, applying in person only at the embassy in their country of residence, with a fee of 2,500 crowns, about $120. For retirees this route is not guaranteed: the consulate assesses the purpose and funds at its discretion.
Common reasons for refusal
- the applicant is under 65 and able to look after themselves;
- there are other close relatives in Russia, so the parent is not considered alone;
- the child has lived in the Czech Republic for less than 15 months or on a short-term visa;
- the housing is below the floor space standard per occupant;
- the translation was not made by a court translator;
- insurance that is not comprehensive or does not cover the whole term;
- for Russian citizens, an application outside the list of exceptions.
