Immigration age limits by country: who sets one, and where you can still move after 45 or 50
Australia and New Zealand shut routes at 45 and 56. Canada cuts points and Germany raises the salary floor. One table with the law and the exact day your age is counted.
In short
- Australia counts age on the day of invitation for visas 189, 190 and 491. Turn 45 before it and no invitation comes; turn 45 after it and you can still apply.
- New Zealand requires the principal applicant for skilled residence to be 55 or younger on the day the residence application is made. From the 56th birthday the route is closed.
- Canada sets no limit. Express Entry gives 0 age points from 45, and the Federal Skilled Worker grid gives 0 of 12 from 47, with the pass mark staying at 67.
- Germany sets no limit either. From 45, a first skilled worker permit under sections 18a and 18b needs a salary from $63,000 (55,770 euros) a year or proven pension savings. The EU Blue Card sits outside this rule.
- After 50 you still have New Zealand if you leave room for the last step, Canada, Germany, and Australia's 482 and 858 visas.
In detail
Australia and New Zealand write a hard age limit for skilled migrants into their rules: points-tested visas stop at 45 in Australia, skilled residence at 56 in New Zealand. Canada and Germany set no limit but make age costly. Canada takes away points; Germany, on a first skilled worker permit from 45, wants a salary from $63,000 (55,770 euros) a year or proven pension savings. Past 50, your options are New Zealand, Canada, Germany and Australia's 482 and 858 visas.

Most people miss the day the age is counted, and each visa picks its own. At 44 the question is what comes first: your birthday or your invitation.

Australia: the invitation date beats the filing date
Australia's points-tested visas have two stages: an expression of interest (EOI), then an invitation. Turn 45 after the invitation and you can still apply. Turn 45 before it and no invitation comes, and the money spent on a skills assessment and English test for this visa is wasted.
The points add pressure: ages 40 to 44 earn only 15, against 25 for ages 33 to 39, and the minimum is 65.
Employer visas 186 and 494 count age on the day of application and allow exemptions. The 186 Direct Entry stream waives the limit for academics at Levels B to E nominated by an Australian university, and for scientists nominated by a university or government science agency.
After 45 the main route starts with the 482 Core Skills work visa, which has no age requirement. After 2 of the last 3 years in sponsored work you can move to the permanent 186, if you earned at least the high income threshold each year: $140,000 (190,100 Australian dollars) from July 1, 2026. Australia's costliest mistake is arriving at 47 on a 482 with a salary below that line: you get the visa but no way to permanent residence through the 186.
An employer's labor agreement can also carry a different age set by the minister. The 858 National Innovation visa sets no limit, but it rewards an internationally recognized record of achievement, and from 55 you must also show exceptional benefit to Australia.

New Zealand: count backwards from 56
The principal applicant must be 55 or younger on the day the residence application is made. Your 56th birthday closes the route, and everything has to fit before it: the expression of interest, the invitation and up to 4 months to file. The Green List of shortage occupations has the same limit.
An application needs 6 points. Reach all 6 in one category (income, qualification or New Zealand registration) and you can apply with no local work history, though you still need a skilled job or offer. Others top up with New Zealand experience: 3 points for 2 years, fewer for less. The other two pathways require local experience: 2 years for Skilled Work Experience, 18 months for Trades and Technician.
Arriving at 54 on a route that needs 2 years of local work is too late, and the 18-month route closes at 54 and a half. The Accredited Employer work visa has no age condition, so you can hold it and never reach this residence.
Germany: from 45, salary or pension savings decide
Germany does not cap age. It asks how you will live in retirement. From your 45th birthday, a first skilled worker permit under sections 18a and 18b requires a salary of at least 55% of the pension contribution ceiling: $63,000 (55,770 euros) a year in 2026. Proven pension savings remove that floor. Renewals fall outside the rule, but applying again after more than 6 months abroad counts as a first permit.

| Route | Yearly salary under 45 | From 45, first permit |
|---|---|---|
| Sections 18a and 18b | No separate floor | From $63,000 (55,770 euros) or savings |
| Section 6, experience without German recognition | From $52,000 (45,630 euros) | From $63,000 (55,770 euros) or savings |
| EU Blue Card, section 18g | From $57,000 (50,700 euros); shortage occupations and recent graduates from $52,000 (45,934.20 euros) | The same amounts |
That makes the Blue Card the obvious move for a university graduate or an IT specialist with 3 years of experience in the last 7, in a job at that level. An offer of $57,000 (50,700 euros) works for the Blue Card and fails for a section 18b permit at 45.
In the fast-track procedure, the day counted is the day your employer reaches its agreement with the authority. On the Employment Regulation routes (experience without German recognition, care assistants, drivers, Western Balkan nationals), it is the first day of work, so a start date that slips past your birthday raises the floor.
The Opportunity Card hides a trap. Nobody tests the floor when the card is issued; you only get a written warning. It applies when you switch to section 18a or 18b, so arriving at 44 and finding a job after turning 45 means $63,000 (55,770 euros).
Exceptions are narrow and discretionary: a public interest beyond the employer's own, or a minor deviation, which official guidance puts at up to 5% under the floor, meaning a salary from $60,000 (52,981.50 euros), or up to 2 years over 45. A labor shortage alone is not enough, and Western Balkan nationals cannot use the minor deviation.
Pension savings follow a formula. Your future pension from this job up to 67, earlier entitlements, foreign pensions, private insurance, rent and assets are set against basic old-age support, and the monthly gap is multiplied over 12 years. The official worksheet of March 1, 2024 used $970 (865 euros) a month, so someone with no pension needed $140,000 (124,560 euros) in capital; it is updated twice a year. A foreign pension counts only if you can draw it while living in Germany, which turns on social security agreements and payment limits.
Self-employed people and freelancers over 45 must show pension provision, and no salary replaces it; the amounts are on our freelancer visa page.
One birthday can close a route or raise your salary floor
Four mistakes cost the most: paying for an Australian skills assessment and English test without working out your invitation date; arriving at 47 on a 482 visa with a salary below the line that opens permanent residence; signing a German contract at $52,000 (45,630 euros) when you are already 45; and moving on an Opportunity Card at 44, then finding a job after turning 45. Each one burns months of your life and money on translations, certified copies and the move itself, and you cannot get the years back. Murblz starts with the calendar: we work out the last day of each route from your date of birth, choose the country and route, check your contract and salary against the floor, gather pension evidence, prepare the documents and manage the filing. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process.
The cost of support depends on the country, the route and your family; a manager will calculate it in the chat.
Canada: 110 points lost, and how to win them back
The Express Entry ranking (CRS, maximum 1,200 points) gives ages 20 to 29 a full 110 points without a spouse or 100 with one. That falls to 50 and 45 at age 40, 6 and 5 at 44, and 0 from 45. Between 40 and 44 every birthday costs 10 to 11 points, so waiting a year is expensive.
A provincial nomination adds 600 points. From November 3, 2026, under new Express Entry rules, a job offer in a high-wage occupation earns 50, 70 or 100 points, and 12 months of Canadian experience in one earns up to 150. The two do not stack: the higher score counts. An invitation still depends on each round's cutoff.
The Federal Skilled Worker grid is a second hurdle: 67 points out of 100, with 12 for age up to 35, 2 at 45, 1 at 46 and 0 from 47. At 47 you need the same 67 from the remaining 88, and language is the largest reserve, at up to 28 points.
What is closed and what stays open after 45
| Age | Closed | Open |
|---|---|---|
| 45-46 | Australia: points-tested visas; 186 and 494 without an exemption | New Zealand, Germany, Canada, Australia's 482 and 858 |
| 47-53 | The same | The same, with 0 of 12 on Canada's skilled worker grid |
| 54-55 | Also New Zealand routes needing local work not yet done | New Zealand without that experience; from 55 the 858 only with exceptional benefit |
| 56 and over | Also New Zealand residence through the Skilled Migrant Category and Green List | Australia's 482 and 858, Germany, Canada, a New Zealand work visa without that residence |
The limit applies only to the main applicant. In Australia and New Zealand a younger spouse can lead the application by meeting the occupation, language and experience tests, with the older partner joining as family.

How Murblz handles cases where the calendar decides
You can work through these public rules yourself. A professional is safer because a mistake here cannot be fixed by filing again: you do not get the birthday back. We start with the calendar, working out the last day of each route from your date of birth, and carry the case through to filing. The process is clear and transparent. The cost is available on request from a manager.
