5 min read ·

Austria has no residence by investment, and there are only about 285 places a year nationwide for the financially independent. We cover which Austrian residence permits Russian citizens can actually get in 2026, the income required and the costs.

In short

  • By investment - not possible: buying a home or a deposit brings no status in Austria.
  • Financially independent - income from $3,000 a month for one person, basic German and a quota of about 285 places a year.
  • For work - the skilled worker card or the EU Blue Card.
  • The fee for a permit is about $250 per applicant aged 6 and over.
  • Russian citizens must apply from abroad, at an Austrian embassy or consulate.

In detail

A Russian citizen gets Austrian residence in 2026 not for money but for income, work or a business. The main route without work is the permit for the financially independent: income from $3,000 a month for one person, basic German and a quota place, of which there are about 285 a year nationwide. All the conditions of this route are on our Austria residence page.

Buying an apartment or a large bank deposit brings no status on its own: Austria has no residence by investment programme.

Residence for the financially independent: income and quota

This permit is for those living on a pension, annuity, rent or dividends. You cannot work in Austria on it, either employed or self-employed.

  • Income - from $3,000 a month for one person, from $4,700 for a couple, plus about $460 per child. Rent and loans reduce the income that counts.
  • German - a basic-level certificate before applying and a higher level within 2 years.
  • Quota - about 285 places a year nationwide, allocated by filing date.
  • Housing and insurance - a lease or property and a policy covering all risks in Austria.

The quota usually fills in the first months of the year, so the full package is prepared in advance, for early January.

Austrian residence for work and business

Working in Austria requires the skilled worker card: it is issued on a job offer and points for education, experience, language and age. Specialists with a degree and a high salary can use the EU Blue Card. Both cards are issued for up to 2 years and renewed.

Founders of innovative projects can use the startup permit: capital from $34,000 and at least 50 points out of 85, a 24-month card with a switch to a card with work rights. We register a company for the business through the company registration in Austria page.

How to apply for Austrian residence from Russia

  1. Pass a German exam at a recognised centre: from scratch it usually takes 2-4 months.
  2. Gather documents: income, housing, insurance, a criminal record certificate with an apostille and German translation.
  3. Apply at an Austrian embassy or consulate: Russian citizens can only apply from abroad.
  4. Get the decision of the provincial immigration authority and an entry visa.
  5. Register your address within 3 days and collect the card.

How much Austrian residence costs

The permit fee is about $250 per applicant aged 6 and over. The German exam, certificates, apostilles and translations, health insurance and housing come on top. Income is not a cost but a condition: it must keep coming for the whole permit term. We will calculate the total for your family in the chat.

You become an Austrian tax resident with a permanent home or by living in the country for more than 183 days a year - more on the taxes in Austria page. Citizenship is a long road: generally 10 years of living in the country and giving up your previous citizenship, details on the Austrian citizenship page.

A fee of about $250, but the key is getting into the quota

The law does not stop you from applying on your own. But mistakes cost more than the fee: a package filed after the year's quota has run out, income below the threshold after rent, a German certificate from an unrecognised school, a criminal record certificate older than 3 months, an attempt to apply inside Austria on a tourist visa. We check income by the authority's rules, find housing that fits the threshold, prepare documents and translations and file at the embassy early in the year while quota places remain. We guarantee professional work and a transparent process, and in most cases a result on the first application.

Support depends on the ground and family size - a manager will calculate it in the chat.
