What has changed by autumn 2026

Since this issue was published, several items have had important follow-ups. Below is where things stand in autumn 2026.

Australia: investor visas are closed

The closure mentioned in the issue went ahead: since 31 July 2024 Australia has not accepted new applications under the Business Innovation and Investment Program, including the investor, significant investor and entrepreneur streams. Applications lodged before that date continue to be processed. There is now no route to Australian permanent residence through capital, so people move through work or study; more on the skills in demand visa page.

Portugal: rules for foreigners tightened

After closing simplified regularisation in 2024, Portugal went further. A law of 22 October 2025 restricted the job seeker visa to highly qualified specialists and generally allows family reunification only after two years of legal residence, with exceptions for families with minor children and holders of EU Blue Cards and golden visas. Residence applications are now filed from abroad, through a consulate. Simplified regularisation for those who entered without a residence visa was closed back in June 2024, and nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries now also need a residence visa before arrival.

FAQ

How do you get a UAE golden visa?
The UAE grants 5 and 10 year golden visas by category: property and business investors, entrepreneurs, scientists and highly skilled professionals, people of exceptional talent, outstanding graduates and senior executives. Professional categories have to prove their qualifications, including an equivalency certificate showing the university is accredited and the degree meets local standards. Document requirements differ between emirates and get updated periodically, so confirm the list with the authority in the emirate where you are applying.
What is a degree equivalency certificate?
It is a document in which the host country's education ministry confirms that your foreign degree matches local academic standards and that the issuing university is accredited. It is increasingly required for work and talent visas, for regulated professions, and for recognition of academic degrees. Allow several weeks: get an apostille or consular legalisation and sworn translations in advance, and keep the originals accessible.
Can you drive into the EU with Belarusian plates?
Several EU states on the eastern border have banned entry for cars with Belarusian plates, following earlier restrictions on Russian ones. In practice vehicles are turned back at the crossing, and refusing to comply can lead to confiscation. Individual countries introduce and adjust these bans, so check the specific crossing you plan to use before setting off.
What happens if you work without a permit?
Penalties hit both sides: the worker can lose their status and face deportation and an entry ban, while the employer faces heavy fines. More and more countries are adding criminal liability for employers on top of the fines for hiring foreigners without valid permits. Before your first day, confirm the permit has actually been issued, has not expired, and covers this specific employer and role.
Can I get Australian permanent residence by investment?
No, the business and investor programme has been closed to new applications since 31 July 2024.
When can I bring my family to Portugal?
Generally after two years of legal residence, with exceptions for families with minor children and some categories.
Does Portugal's job seeker visa still exist?
Since 23 October 2025 it is issued only to highly qualified specialists; consulates no longer accept regular applications.
