Your guide to life in Paraguay: climate, living, safety and interesting facts
Paraguay is called Corazón de América - the heart of America. It is a small exotic country that is not very popular with tourists, landlocked, but has natural riches, extraordinary colonial architecture and a rich historical past. Why should you consider this country for your 2024 move? We'll tell you in a moment.
CLIMATE
WINTER: June 22 - September 21. Temperatures are +25 during the day and +14 at night. The coldest month of the year is August, which Paraguayans themselves dread. Heavy rain, wind, hail the size of a quail's egg, at night the temperature drops to +3 degrees Celsius. You have to take into account that there is no heating in the houses.
SPRING: September 22 - December 21. The most comfortable time of the year in Paraguay. The temperature during the day maximum +30, at night minimum +20 degrees.
SUMMER: December 22 - March 22. Daytime up to +45 in the shade, at night not lower than +25. It is better to go outside before 10 am or after 20 pm. You can't do without air conditioning at this time of year.
AUTUMN: March 23 - June 21. The weather is excellent, especially after the summer heat, which will definitely seem abnormal for people who are not used to it. Daytime temperatures are up to +27 degrees Celsius, nighttime temperatures are at least +15 degrees Celsius.
Comfortable weather in Paraguay from the end of September to mid-December and from the end of March to the end of July. Periods from August to September and from January to February are better to wait it out in another country, if possible, or be ready to adapt to these weather conditions.
LIVING
Paraguay has three favorite places for emigrants:
Asunción, the country's capital
An actively residential urban agglomeration of more than ten cities. Asuncion is suitable for yuppies, city dwellers without children or with teenage children.
There is no shortage of real estate for rent or purchase. The cost of renting an apartment in a good area of the city starts from 3.5 million guaraníes per month (about 500 dollars). The cost of renting a house - from 8 million guaranies (about 1100 dollars). The cost of buying a property starts at $1,000 per square meter.
Asuncion specifics of renting for foreigners: if you do not have a cedula (passport resident of Paraguay), then you will not be able to sign a contract with monthly payment of rent. The first contract you will be able to sign is for six months, with a one-month non-refundable deposit and six months' rent in one lump sum.
Encarnacion
Encarnación is most often chosen by families with small children, people from the provinces who do not want to live expensive, and those who appreciate silence, comfort and tranquility. The main attraction of the city is the connection with the Argentine Pasados (you can get there through the bridge, and prices are much lower than Paraguayan prices).
From December to March, rental prices go up a lot. The infrastructure in Encarnación is less developed than in Asunción, but the city is increasingly becoming a nice resort place with all amenities.
Another specialty of Encarnación is Paraguay's version of Brazilian Carnival, which takes place in February. It takes place in different places in the city throughout the month and culminates with the Grand Carnival on the waterfront.
Oenau, a small urban village
A dream for nature lovers. European farmers with serious financial savings often move to the village. Real estate prices, especially land prices, are among the highest in the country. Rental prices are comparable to Encarnacion. Clean, safe, comfortable and expensive.
SAFETY
Paraguay, like Colombia, are two of the safest countries to live in Latin America. However, it should be taken into account that safety in Latin America is not a European concept. You should realize that there is an influence of the criminal world on society. In the country it is perfectly legal to purchase and store firearms. Also, one of the main routes of Bolivian cocaine trafficking to Europe runs through Paraguay.
If you live in good neighborhoods and follow some simple rules, life in Paraguay is quite safe.
NATURAL HAZARDS
In Asuncion, the real epidemiologic threat is mosquitoes, vectors of dengue and chikugunya viruses. The rest of the flora and fauna are quite safe.
In other parts of Paraguay you can meet some species of insects and reptiles, contact with which can bring certain troubles. The main thing is not to be the initiator of this contact. As long as you don't touch them, they don't touch you.
Among the rare phenomena are tornadoes in the southeast of the country between Enarnacion and the small town of Captain Miranda. But, according to locals, such phenomena do not happen often and, in general, do not disturb the measured life of Paraguayans.
